1. What modes of heat transfer occurs between the two fluid streams?
• Convection
• Conduction

2. What is the definition of the effectiveness of the heat exchanger?

NTU ( number of transfer units ) and LMTD ( log mean temperature difference ) can be used to
calculate the effectiveness of heat exchanger.

3. Would you expect the overall heat transfer coefficient to be different for counter

current and cocurrent operation? Explain the reason.

Yes,

• cocurrent design – temperature of the cold stream outlet is less compared to the hot stream

outlet. The heat transfer is restricted by the cold stream’s outlet temperature.

• counter current design – the restriction is relaxed and the outlet cold temperature can exceed

The outlet’s hot temperature. The heat transfer is restricted by the cold stream’s inlet

Temperature.

4. Explain briefly the advantages of double pipe heat exchanger compared to other

heat exchangers.

•simple to construct

• very easy operation

• U- type or hair pin construction handle different thermal expansion
