Abstract

There is a general acknowledgement of the lack of spiritual and emotional richness in

contemporary architecture. This thesis attempts to address the issue of normalised
and emotionless architecture, through the design of a Dhamma center, Osho ashrams,
Brahmkumari Ashrams, Zen Centre and many more for meditation and other community
activities that unite body and mind.

The project was grounded in the belief in the potential and ability of the key architectu-
ral constituents structure, form, space, light, colours and materials to produce an
emotionally rich architecture. The investigation also involved extensive research into
architectural precedents, the phenomenology of human perception and cognition,
and the intangible qualities, or the essence and meaning of a spiritual architecture.

A key element of the design methodology were the concepts of ‘bliss’ and ‘flow’, which
involved creative immersion in freehand modelling and pencil sketching, and supportd
the notion of ‘sensory thinking’ through the use of the hands in creative work.

The resultant scheme has an inseparable relationship to the theory behind the project and exis
ts as a fusion of ideas from numerous strands of research on spiritual precednts, the architectur
al constituents, human perception and cognition and Dhamma philosophy

Structure System
The final built form of the structure can be described as a flattened sphere consisting of a
huge chamber suspend in a massive concrete mesh globe mounted on four parts of concrete
pillars at the exact centre of the chamber a crystal globe mounted has been placed as a focal
point of attention. the profile of the structure, though geometrically controlled, is not
mathematically definable for the purpose of understanding, the shape can be approximated as
a surface of revolution of an ellipse 36mx2m. four pairs of 38m high sicle-shaped piers, which
are theucturally principle load baring components of the structure support the space frame.

The Sacred Geometry
There are ancient monuments that continue to fascinate us: and there are buildings in
where one brathes in, what we call, a certain "spirit". why is this so? sri aurobindo
mentions this presence of the invincible in his book "the foundations of indian culture".

Sacred Geometry - Matri Mandir, Auroville

what in terms of architecture makes the inner
chamber a special place?
it was ten years after mother first expressed
her vision of the inner chamber that it was
found by chance that the golden section and
the proportion of the great pyramid are
precisely incorporated in its cross section
(fig1).

it was also discovered that sri aurobondo's

symbol fitted exactly into the shalagrram, the
form in which matri mandir has been built.
(a shalagrram is an ancient symbol described
in hindu cosmology as '' the egg of brahman''
from where the creation has sprung forth).
in other words there are two triangles with
same proportions as the great pyramid inside
the shalagram (fig2).

The energy field inside the great pyramid is

located at one third of its height (the place
where the king's chamber is situated). if we
project this to the two triangles inside the
shalagram, we get a band of a about 110
centimeters where the energy field will be
concentrated. this band will be in the inner
chamber, precisely where the people sit (fig 3)
