Some people say that humanitarian subjects such as philosophy, history and literature the

pupils study in universities have no value for their future career. To what extent do you agree
or disagree?

It is true that the subject of humanities is taught in a number of universities with a number of
students majoring in it. Although there are people who argue that teaching such subjects namely
philosophy, history and literature is of no significance to a university graduate’s career, I tend to
disagree.

On the one hand, opponents of my argument have a number of reasons to support their view
point. To begin with, they claim that philosophers tend to be over critical about everything and
hence their ideas are often impractical. Besides, they say that study of history is useless as they
are very different from today’s situation. For example, the situation that led to the freedom struggle in
India against foreign rule is no longer relevant because it will not repeat. Moreover, they believe that
studying literature involves perfecting the finer nuances of grammar and vocabulary which often
complicates language learning as a means to communicate effectively.

On the other hand, in my view, the above arguments have its own weaknesses. First of all,
philosophy helps people to think deeper and thus obtain a profound understanding of how the world
works, or even how it should work. In addition, history helps us analyze and learn from our past mistakes
such as the use of atom bombs in Japan during the Second World War. Finally, Studying literature
involves reading, discussing, thinking and writing, helping students to improve in these areas. It also
encourages students to think critically, and arrive at well informed conclusions on a variety of subjects.

In conclusion, the judgment that learning humanities would affect a university student’s career is
invalid as these subjects help them to be creative and critical thus making them compete well for
a better future.
