Instructional Materials & Media [ASSURE (Select Strategies, Technology, Media and Materials)]
Prezi Presentation (Technology), An Astronaut’s Adventure (story written by the teacher), waste materials (
box, crayons, glue, mats)

Learning-Teaching Methods [ASSURE (Select Strategies, Technology, Media and Materials)]

Teacher centered (presentation) , Cooperative Learning¸ Problem-based Learning, face to face classroom
instruction

Teaching Activities [ASSURE (Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials and Require Learner Participation)]
In this activity, children listen the story of An Astronaut’s Adventure and gain information about the
characteristics of Planet by seeing real pictures of them with Prezi presentation tool. Children take the
information about them in that Prezi. At the end of the story, the astronaut gives them a problem about how
she goes to these planets and children try to deal with this problem by creating spaceship-like vehicle.

Individual Learning Activities Every child makes own unique drawing about how
they would be, if they were a planet.
Group Learning Activities Children learn the characteristics of planets and create
a spaceship with together as a whole group in
collaborative way.
Summary
After free play time, the teacher opens the Prezi presentation that the teacher made, when children
enter the classroom. This presentation is expected to attract children’s attention. Then, the teacher asks
question like “What they might be?” Children’s responses are listened one by one. The teacher says “Today,
we are going to make an activity about the space. Now, let’s learn what planets are in space and I am going to
read “An Astronaut's Adventure”. While the teacher introduces the story, s/he opens the Prezi and start to
read the story of planets written by the teacher through using Prezi presentation. (PREZİ LİNKİ EKLENECEK!!!!!)
The story is stated below;
(Astronaut) – Hello, how are you kids? My name is Astronaut Jane. Have you ever seen an astronaut before?
Who is the astronaut? Astronauts are individuals who are trained to participate in space studies. Well do you
know another planet name different from the Earth?

(Astronaut) - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Let's explore them together!

(Teacher brings Mercury)

(Astronaut) – Oo the first planet has already come to meet us.

(Mercury) - Hello kids my name is Mercury. I am the first and smallest planet in the solar system. At the same
time I am the closest to the sun.

(Astronaut) - I am glad to meet you Mercury, I hope to meet again. Good bye! What could be our second
planet, which one?

(Venus) - Hello guys, I am Venus! I am the closest planet to the Earth where you live in, but there are no living
things on Venus.

(Astronaut) – What could be the reason of that there are no living things in the Venus?

(Venus) - Because I am so hot that I can keep the sunshine inside of me and there is no water on me. I have
acid rain, which is the substance that can burn you when it touches deeply.

(Astronaut) - What an interesting planet! Thanks Venus for introducing yourself to us. Goodbye! Yes guys
do you know the next planet? I think that all we know the next planet.

(Earth) – Hi children! I am the Earth. I am the only planet on which includes life. You, the animals and the
plants can live on me because I have the water that is too hot and cold.

(Astronaut) - We thank the Earth for providing us with a living space. Let’s see other planet.

(Mars) - I was so excited while waiting for my turn to talk about myself. I am Mars! My other name is the “red
planet”. I am the planet most resembling to the Earth but there is no life on me and I am colder than the
Earth.

(Jupiter) – Okay Mars, these information are enough. This is my turn and I will introduce myself as soon as I'm
ready. I am biggest planet and my name is Jupiter, my friends shortly call me as Jupi. I am a gas giant because I
am a huge planet, mostly made of gas. That's it for me.

(Astronaut) - Thank you Jupiter for this interesting information. I guess there is a planet too! Saturn! Let’s
come here, we want to meet with you.

(Saturn) – Okay, I am coming. I just wanted to play hide-and-seek with you. Hello guys I'm Saturn. I like a little
to Jupiter because; I'm made of gas too. I am the lightest planet in the solar system. I'm so light.

(Astronaut) – Wow! What is it that surrounds your around?

(Saturn) – It is my ring! It consists of rocks and dust.. It always spins around me.

(Astronaut) – What a different characteristic! uww! The weather starts to become colder.

(Uranus) - Because I came. I am the coldest planet around here. My name is Uranus. But they call me the “ice
giant”. Because I am far away from the sun I cannot get much sunshine because I'm 7th planet I'm a little dark.
But I have a friend who is farther away from the sun than me. Neptune come here?

(Neptune) - Hello guys I'm Neptune. It is true that I am farther away and darker because I am the planet
farthest to the sun, but not as cold as Uranus.

(Astronaut) - I would like to thank him for this information. We were glad to meet you all. Well Children,
We've met 8 planets in the solar system and as you know, I go some planets to do researches. It is my job and
because of this reason, now I should go to the Mars with my spaceship but while I was coming earth to the
Moon, I had a crash and my spaceship broken. Can you please help me to solve this problem? How can we
solve it?
After the astronaut explains her problem to the children, the teacher let the children brainstorm about
it. Children start to think about how they can deal with this problem for her and it is expected to think that
they can create something like spaceship that helps Jane going to these Planets. By using waste materials like
box, crayons, glue, mats, they make a spaceship to help the astronaut. After they made spaceship, the
astronaut thanks to the children and goes to the classroom. Then, the teacher ask question as a part of the
assessment. S/he says “If you were a planet, what kind of planet would you be? Which shape are you?” “Now,
I distribute paper and put the crayons on the table. Let’s draw what kind of planet you would be.” After
children finish their drawing, each child makes reflection about their works.

Measurement & Evaluation

Teacher makes assessment during activity process rather than after. In order to do it, teacher uses reflections
of children and this is one of the methods that use in early childhood. During reflection process, teacher can
ask questions.
Descriptive Question;
Which materials did you use in making spaceship?
Which planets mention in the story?
Affective Question;
What would you look like, if you were a planet?
What would your characteristics?
Daily Life Question;
What are the characteristics of Earth that we live in?
Question Related With Objectives and Indicators;
Are all planets on the space the same?
Are there any differences between them?

Measurement & Assessment Activities for Children draw what they would look like on the paper
Individual Performance individually, if they were a planet. The teacher asks both
descriptive and affective question to each child one by
one in order to help and enrich their reflection about
work.
Measurement & Assessment Activities for The teacher asks question, while they make a spaceship as
Group Performance whole group and s/he can make assessment after activity
finishes about their spaceship. Asking descriptive question
to whole group about the characteristics of planet helps
the teacher to make them right.
Explanation regarding to the implementation of the plan
If there is an Internet connection cut off, s/he would have difficulty in presenting the pictures of the planets
found in Prezi. Therefore, the teacher should take the oversized printout of planet images in the case of the
Internet outage. S/he can display the real pictures of planets, while s/he read the story.
