PHYSICS CHAPTER 9 FLUID DYNAMICS Worksheet 1

Name

Period
1. A water hose 2 centimeters in diameter is used to fill a 20-liter bucket. If it takes one minute to fill the bucket find the speed
at which the water leaves the hose. (Answer 1.06 m/s)

2. A water hose 1-centimeter in diameter is used to fill a 30-liter bucket. If it takes 2 minutes to fill the bucket, find the speed at
which the water leaves the hose. (Answer 3.18 m/s)

3. The rate of flow of water through a horizontal pipe is 2 m3/min. Determine the velocity of flow at a point where the diameter
of the pipe is A) 10 centimeter, B) 5 centimeters. (Answer 4.24 m/s, 16.98 m/s)

4. Water squirts from a syringe at a speed of 30 m/s. The diameter of the opening is .01 centimeters. Determine the pressure
difference between the water inside the syringe and the air outside. Assume the syringe is horizontal and also that the flow
5
rate inside is zero. Express the result in Pascal’s and also in atmospheres. (Answer 4.5 X 10 Pa, 4.44 Atm)

5. The water supply of a building is fed through a main 6-centimeter diameter pipe. A 2 centimeter diameter faucet tap located
2 meters above the main pipe is observed to fill a 25-liter container in 30 seconds. A) What is the speed at which the water
4
leaves the faucet? B) What is the gauge pressure in the 6-centimeter pipe? (Answer 2.653 m/s, 2.31 X 10 Pa)
2
6. An airplane has a mass of 16,000 kilograms, and the total wing area of 40 m . During level flight, the pressure on the lower
4 4
wing surface is 7.0 X 10 Pa. Determine the pressure on the upper wing surface. (Answer 6.608 X 10 Pa)

2
7. The total area of a wing of and aircraft is 25 m . If the speed of the air is 50 m/s over the lower wing surface and 65 m/s over
the upper wing surface, determine the weight of the airplane. (Assume the plane travels in level flight at constant speed at
and elevation where the temperature of air is 0 Co. Also assume that all of the lift is provided by the wings.)
4
(Answer 5.56 X 10 N)

8. The flow of blood through a normal artery is 22 cm3/min. Determine the velocity of blood at a point where the diameter of
the artery is .3 cm and the velocity of the blood is increased by a blockage to the point where the diameter is reduced to .17
cm. (Answer .05178 m/s, .16154 m/s)

9. An industrial accident took out all the electronic sensors and technology used to determine the depth of an oil well. You
decide that you are going to apply physics to estimate the depth of the well. The table in your book puts the ρoil between the
following two values—(800 kg/m3 & 900 kg/m3). The pressure gage at the busy end of the drill rig is reading 3.55 x 106 Pa.
You assume the velocity of the oil underground is the same velocity at the surface. How deep is the well?
(Answer The well is somewhere between 402.5 m and 452.8 meters deep)

10. A 40 meter water tank is filled to the top. How fast does the water exit a valve located 1.5 meters from the bottom of the
tank?

40m

1.5m
