FORKLIFT TRUCK HANDLING

1- BASIC RULES
- The following basic rules must be respected during handling :

. Avoid all abrupt movements and any load tilting.

. Avoid all impacts or abrasion against the floors or the sides of the
transport vehicles and/or others goods.
. Avoid rough contact with the ground.

- The forks of the truck must be protected by rubber paddings, or any other suitable means
The purpose of this protection is to prevent direct MÉTAL/PUX contact, or the forks rubbing
against the pipes.
- The forks must be of adequate size and sufficiently widely spaced to prevent any risk
of the load tilting while the forklift truck is moving.

- The lenght of the forks must provide a complete grasp on the load,to avoid :
. Any risk of falling as the truck moves.

NO NO

. Damaging to other pipes while lifting or lowering the load.

HANDLING
2 - SPECIFIC FORKLIFT TRUCK BUNDLE HANDLING RULES

NO

- Do not insert the truck forks between

2 layers of pipe in a bundle

NO

- Do not slide the bundle along, and do not

push in with the truck forks

3 - SPECIFIC

- Truck forks must NEVER be NO

entered into a pipe, as this damages
the lining :

Only a protected spur adapted for the

diameter and the weight of pipes can be
used, especially during the stuffing and
unstuffing operations of containers and
for the nesting and un-nesting of pipes
between them.

4 - SPECIAL HANDLING WITH FORKLIFT

When the person houdler who handles doesn't have a crane for the storage of loose pipes according
to MODE 1 ( pyramidal stacking, see brochure : STORAGE ) we can use o forklift equipped either
with a beam or with a spreader for containers where are adapted slings and hooks

In all cases, please take care of the swinging of pipes during the handling of the carriage.

HANDLING BUNDLES
BY CRANE
1- GENERAL RULES
- The crane handling equipment must be designed to avoid damaging the pipe lining and
external coating.
- The following basic rules must be respected during handling :
. Avoid all abrupt movements and any load tilting.
. Avoid all impacts or abrasion against the floors or the sides of the
transport vehicles and/or others goods.
. Avoid rough contact with the ground.

2 - SPECIFIC RULES FOR BUNDLES

A - EQUIPEMENT CHARACTERISTICS:

* Use of TEXTILE STRAPS is preferred.

. To obtain good load stability and avoid straps slippage

during handling, space the straps at least 2/3 of
the total bundle lenght apart :

2/3 L

NOTE :
- If wire slings are used instead of textile straps, it is vital that they be
protected, to avoid damaging the pipe external coating ( e.g. cover the wire
slings with rubber tube ).
- BUNDLES MUST NEVER BE LIFTED WITH HOOKS.

D - USE OF A BEAM OR SPREADER

The use of a beam ( SPREADER ) is strongly advised to avoid any load slippage
and bundle distortion.

YES

The width "w" of the spreader

must alway be less than that
of the load.

2 - SPECIFIC RULES FOR LOOSE PIPES

1 ) CHARACTERISTICS LOOSE PIPES LOAD :

Loose pipes can either be handled singly or in 2 or 3 in each lift

This load depends on the nominal diameter (ND) and the pipe characteristics
of the pipes (external coating, group… ) and the available handling equipment :

The number of pipes and load weights must comply in all cases with the
regulation applicable in the country concerned

Generally these are the width of vehicles or the width of holds that determine the lift

2 ) HOOK CHARACTERISTICS :

To avoid damaging the pipe lining and external coating, the use of protected
hooks is IMPERATIVE. ( SEE SKETCH )

This protection can be made a pad or

sheatch of plastic, rubber, or leather.
Regular replacement is essential when
it become worn.

BAD : DO NOT USE " BUTCHER "

HANDLING
1. Handling of PUX pipes

The basic rules remain the same, but you must take several other measures detailed below:

o Use hooks and shackles protected type PUX

o Handle the pipes by unit or use a spreader with separators between the pipes (tires or
rubber pads hanged to a rope near the both sides of the pipes, socket (1) and spigot (9) to
avoid shocks and contacts).

o You must equip all hooks with a rope in order to avoid even a small clash between them and
the polyurethane of Pux pipes during the handlings.
Furthermore, these ropes will allow you to guide and to load the pipes on the trailers or on
the stacks with precision and sweetness while winning time

o During the handling operations, you must put the hooks directly on the top of the both sides
(socket and spigot) to avoid that the slippage of hooks causes some unacceptable damages
on the polyurethane and/or the external coating when the crane starts to lift

o Nota : be careful with the dunnage. One piece of wood fallen from several meters on one
Pux pipe means one damage on the polyurethane
