1 Architectural Design Renderings

Introduction

This involves completion of basic form and external model of a selected architectural design. During this stage the
completed 3D model will reflect the knowledge of using the software to create 3D geometries. 3D models will be
assessed on the overall detail, complexity and creativity used in the creation and development process.

Objectives of Project

1. Understand and execute the functions of Standard Primitives, Splines & Modifiers.
2. Understand and utilise polygon modelling and NURBS modelling in producing the 3D models.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

1. To produce 3D model of a selected architectural design using 3DS Max/Rhinoceros or both.

2. To record Work in Progress (WIP) as progressive evidence of the working process.

Tasks - Methodology

1. You are to select ONE building from available resources (architecture magazines, books, websites & etc.) or
Design Studio 2 Project. You are required to conduct research to gather necessary information such as
plan, elevations, sections and perspective drawings.

2. You are to create a complete model of the selected architectural design using 3DS Max or Rhinoceros or a
combination of both. You are required to produce the 3D model, WITHOUT materials and lighting

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS (CSC60503/ARC2723): August 2016 1

3. You are required to create a blog or Facebook album for public access. The Work in Progress (WIP) print
screens and test renderings must be uploaded to the above online platform REGULARLY to show
progressive evidence of the working process. It will serve as a communication and mutual learning platform.
You are encouraged to visit your peers’ WIP and give constructive comments and suggestions.

Submission Requirement

1. Submit softcopy file to TIMeS.

2. Upload renderings (800px length JPEG, 5 views ) showing the completed model, to your WIP website
3. Upload Work in Progress (WIP) print screens and test renderings to your WIP website (blogs or
Facebook album)

Context

Introduction

The second project involves the production of photorealistic still rendering of the selected architecture design
with materials, appropriate camera views and post-production enhancement on the visual outcome. The
visualisation work would be assessed on the types and ways materials are used, types of lights and effects used
to set up the scene, setup of appropriate camera views for rendering and skills of using post-production tools to
enhance the visual outcome.

Objectives of Project

1. Able to import .dwg file into 3DS Max.

2. To manage the 3D scene using layers.
3. To create materials for 3D objects.
4. To use lights in 3DS Max for exterior and interior rendering.
5. To set up good photographic compositions using cameras in 3DS Max for final rendering.
6. To understand and execute the appropriate rendering settings.
7. To enhance the visual outcome of the renderings using post-production tools.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

1. Produce photorealistic still renderings of the selected building with materials, lighting, camera views and site
context.
2. To record Work in Progress (WIP) as progressive evidence of the working process.

Tasks - Methodology

1. Using the same model from Project 1, you are required to add in materials, lights, cameras and site context
for final rendering. Site context may include landscaping, furniture, vehicles and human characters. You
may use post-production tools such as Adobe Photoshop to enhance the visual outcome.

2. The Work in Progress (WIP) must be uploaded to the mentioned online platform to show progressive
evidence of the working process. It will serve as a communication and mutual learning platform. You are
encouraged to visit your peers’ WIP and give constructive comments and suggestions.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS (CSC60503/ARC2723): August 2016 3

Submission Requirement

3 the Completed 3D Animation
Scene

Introduction

This project involves production of a maximum 90 seconds animation of the completed 3D scene using 3DS
Max’s animation commands and tools. It also involves simple video editing work such as stitching video clips,
background music & special effects editing, through the use of Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, Adobe Premiere
and After Affects.

Objectives of Project

1. To continue from Project 2, the completed scene is animated.

2. To set up camera paths for animation rendering.
3. To allow students to explore their imagination, inventiveness and storytelling abilities when creating the
animation.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

1. Produce photorealistic animation renders.

2. To record Work in Progress (WIP) as progressive evidence of the working process.

Tasks - Methodology

1. Using the 3D scene from Project 2, you are required to use 3DS Max to set the camera paths for animation.
The rendered clips will be stitched using video editing softwares for presentation. You may use the above
softwares for background music and special effects editing. The final animation duration has to be 60-90
seconds.

2. The Work in Progress (WIP) must be uploaded to the mentioned online platform to show progressive
evidence of the working process. It will serve as a communication and mutual learning platform. You are
encouraged to visit your peers’ WIP and give constructive comments and suggestions.

3. You are to upload the completed animation (avi, wmv or mov format) to online video hosts such as
YouTube, Vimeo & etc. to allow comments and suggestions from your peers and lecturers. You must embed
the video onto your WIP website.

Submission Requirement

 Submit 3DS Max file to TIMeS.

 Upload animation to online video host and embedded on WIP website(minimum 640px width, 60-
90seconds)
 Upload Work in Progress (WIP) print screens and test renderings to your WIP website.
