TUTORIAL 4

1. Kerosene with kinematics viscosity = 5.1 x 10 -7 m2/s flows in a 30 cm diameter smooth

pipe. Find the flow rate when the head loss is 0.4 m per 100 m.

2. Oil with ρ = 900 kg/m3 and  = 0.00001 m2/s flows at 0.2 m3/s through 500 m of 200 mm
diameter cast iron pipe. Calculate f by using Karman formula and head loss due to friction.

3. Tank A transport oil at rate of 100 L/s to tank B. If the pipe diameter is 150 mm and loss
coefficient for inlet, outlet and bend are 0.4, 1 and 0.9 respectively, calculate
(i) Reynolds number of flow
(ii) Energy losses in the system in meter
(iii) Additional energy by pump, hpump
(iv) Pressure at point B
(Given: friction factor, f = 0.016, specific gravity for oil, s.g = 0.92, kinematics viscosity,
 = 0.003 m2/s)

4. Gasoline (rd=0.719) is being discharge from a pipe from point 1 to point 2. Given that pipe
roughness (e) and pressure at point 1 is 0.5 mm and 2500 kPa respectively. Determine the
pipe diameter is needed to discharge gasoline at a rate of 0.1 m 3/s. Neglect any minor
losses. (μ= 2.9 x 10-4 m2/s)
