Content/Presentation/Demonstration Outline
Instruct students to inspect the wheel studs and lug nuts for damage. Have them look for signs of
stretched studs, cross threaded lug nuts, and broken-off studs. They can then determine if the stud can
be removed with the flange on or off the vehicle
Tell students that to perform the draw-in method, they should position the flange so the stud has
clearance on the back side to be removed.
Instruct them to remove any damaged studs with a hammer. Tell students to be careful not to damage
any of the surfaces on the flange and hub, including the wheel speed sensor and tone ring.
Tell students to insert the new stud in the hole in the flange and rotate it so that all of the flutes on the
stud line up with the notches in the flange.
Have them place enough heavy duty washers over the stud to prevent the lug nut from bottoming out on
the threads.
Tell them to place the lug nut onto the stud flat side in, and tighten it until the stud bottoms out in the
flange. Let them know to inspect the threads on the stud and lug nut to make sure they did not get
damaged.
Instruct students that to perform the hydraulic press method, remove the hub and wheel flange from the
vehicle following the manufacturer’s procedure. They can then use the press to push out any damaged
lug studs
Next, tell them to insert the new lug stud into the wheel flange hole. Again, remind them to line up the
flutes on the stud with the notches in the flange.
Instruct them to support the hub and flange so the press is pushing the stud straight into the flange, and
then push the stud in until it bottoms out in the flange.
Tell students that to complete the drawing-in method and hydraulic press method, they should verify that
each stud is fully seated in the flange.
Tell students that when the wheel stud installation is complete, they can reinstall the hub and flange on
the vehicle if it was removed.

Evaluation and feedback Prior to Testing or Lab Work

Objective 1. / Formative assessment / Instructor will observe students as they practice the procedure to
assure correct procedure and safety practices are being followed. A checklist will be utilized to chart
1 student progress on the task. Questioning techniques will be utilized as necessary to demonstrate
student comprehension / depth of knowledge. 2/ Adaptations and/or accommodations for special needs
students will be added if required.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT: (Assess student progress with performance criteria.)

Objective 1 / Summative assessment / written test questions on stated objective / depth of knowledge
1 3/ adaptation and / or accommodations for special needs students will be added if required

IMPACT--Reflection/Analysis of Teaching and Learning: (How did students’ progress in relation to the
state objectives? Was the instruction successful? Analyze samples of student work particularly that which
is unsatisfactory, for the purpose of planning further instruction.)

REFINEMENT--Lesson Extension and Follow-up: (To be filled in as the lesson is modified during initial
planning and/or during the teaching learning process.)
