Program Notes
Trittico, Mvt. 1
Vaclav Nelhybel, arranged by Michael Story
Alfred Publishing Belwin Division 2011 • Grade 2 • Performance Time: 2:45
Trittico was composed by Vaclav Nelhybel in 1963 for Dr. William D. Revelli, who gave
the first performance of the work in 1964, with the Symphony Band of the University of
Michigan. The piece consists of three movements, with the first and third related to each
other with their forward-moving and energetic character. Trittico is widely considered
one of the most important band works of the 20th century. This arrangement is a
simplified version of the first movement.

Prospect
Setting by Pierre La Plante
Bourne Co. 1983 • Grade 2+ • Performance Time: 4:00
The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, published in Philadelphia in 1835, was one
of the more popular “shape-note” tunebooks of 19th century America. Shaped notes were
devised to make music reading easier for the novice. Tunebooks were, as a result, often
used to teach music by the traveling music teacher.
The Southern Harmony is also a wealth of folk tunes, popular airs, and ballads, as well as
the expected hymn tunes. It is not only the source of Prospect, but other well-known
tunes such as Amazing Grace and Rock of Ages.
Pierre La Plante has cast Prospect in a reverential but thoroughly modern idiom. It is
simple, yet expressive; it builds slowly and steadily to a broad, quasi-fanfare finish.

Rhythm Stand
Jennifer Higdon
Hal Leonard Corporation 2004 • Grade 2 • Performance Time: 2:30
Rhythm Stand pays tribute to the constant presence of rhythm in our lives, from the
pulse of a heart beating to the rhythmic sounds of the world around us. Celebrating the
“regular order” we all experience, Higdon incorporates traditional and non-traditional
sounds within a 4/4-meter American style swing to heighten student awareness and
enhance their creativity. Organized in unique compositional and rhythmic patterns, this
work invites students to explore multiple ways of organizing sounds and making music.
Brighton Beach
William Latham
Alfred Publishing 2001 • Grade 3 • Performance Time: 4:00
Brighton Beach, a concert march composed in 1954, was William Latham’s first published
work for band. It was an immediate success with school band directors and was listed
among the 100 most popular marches by The Instrumentalist four times between 1960
and 1976. The style is British, in the tradition of Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst, William
Walton, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The title refers to the famous resort on the
southern coast of England.

A Walk In The Morning Sun

Pierre La Plante
Daehn Publications 2010 • Grade 2 • Performance Time 3:15
Pierre La Plante grew up in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin in the 1950’s listening to the town’s
radio station, WDOR. The noon show featured news, community events, obituaries
and local gossip, with musical interludes sprinkled in. At this time Leroy Anderson was
experiencing his greatest commercial success, and his orchestral miniatures were a staple
on WDOR. Blue Tango, A Trumpeter’s Lullaby, The Syncopated Clock, and, of course,
Sleigh Ride are only a partial list of this master tunesmith’s orchestral gems. A Walk
in the Morning Sun is a musical “tip of the hat” to Leroy Anderson’s unique style and
contribution to American music.

Foundry
John Mackey
Osti Music 2011 • Grade 3 • Performance Time: 4:00
The composer states, “The idea with Foundry was to make a piece that celebrates the fact
that percussionists have this ability to make just about anything into an ‘instrument.’
“In some cases, I was specific about what instrument to play (timpani, xylophone, etc.).
With many of the parts, though, I only described what sound I wanted (play a ‘clang’ — a
metal instrument, probably struck with a hammer, that creates a rich ‘CLANG!’ sound),
and allowed the percussionist to be creative in finding the best ‘instrument’ to make the
sound I described.
“It won’t be surprising that Foundry, for concert band with ‘found percussion,’ much of it
metallic, ends up sounding like a steel factory.”
Thanks to Greg Scapillato at Northbrook Junior High School for use of the “4 resonant, rattling
piles of metal” instrument.

Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C
Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C is located in Will County, Illinois.
The district was founded in 1949 and includes portions of Joliet, Shorewood, Channahon,
Crest Hill, and unincorporated Troy Township. The District serves 4,268 students.
This Pre-K through Eighth Grade school district consists of five elementary schools (Pre-K
through Fourth Grade), William B. Orenic Intermediate School (970 Fifth and Sixth
Grade students), and Troy Middle School (945 Seventh and Eighth Grade students).

Band at Troy
Since the opening of William B. Orenic Intermediate School in 2006, Beginning Band
has started in the Fall of 5th Grade. Beginning Band students have approximately 40
minute, like-instrument pull out lessons once a week and hour-long after-school band
rehearsals once a week. Starting in 6th grade, students are divided into ability-based
groups which are graded, daily classes. The 6th grade students are divided into two
groups (The 6th Grade Intermediate and Cadet Bands), while the Troy Middle School
7th and 8th grade students are divided into three groups (The Troy Middle School
Symphonic, Concert and Cadet Bands). All Troy Middle School Band students who are
able to attend summer rehearsals participate in the Marching Band. Students have the
option to participate in Jazz Band.

The Troy Bands have experienced much success in recent years. The 6th Grade
Intermediate Band and Troy Middle School Concert Band consistently earn Division
One ratings at the Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA) District
Organization Contest and participate in IGSMA State Festival. The Intermediate Band
appeared at the 2011 Illinois Music Education Conference as part of the clinic session
“Teach, Reteach, and Reinforce: Philosophy & Strategies for Teaching Successful First &
Second-Year Bands.” In addition, the Intermediate Band, under the direction of Jennifer
Carlton, was awarded Honors Status at IGSMA State Festival in 2015 and 2016.

Members of the Troy Bands participate in a number of performances in addition to their

large concert ensembles. Each year the Troy Band Program sends approximately 70
entries to IGSMA Solo & Ensemble Contest. Students also participate in the annual
Troy Chamber Concert, performing in small group ensembles (Brass Quintet, Woodwind
Quintet, etc.). Many band members also participate in the Winter Carol Band which
performs each year at local nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and various community
events.
Troy Middle School Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band consistently receives Division One ratings at IGSMA District
Organization Contest and has received Honors Status at State Festival every year from
2011 to 2016. In 2017 the band was awarded High Honors.

The Symphonic Band has also been invited to participate in the prestigious University of
Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival eight times since 2006. The band was named
Honor Band twice under the direction of Ted Lega in 2007 and 2010.

Members of the Symphonic Band also participate in IGSMA Solo & Ensemble Contest,
the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) District 1 Junior Band Festival and
the All-Illinois Junior Band. Many members of the band are also active in performances
with the TMS Marching and Jazz Bands, Winter Carol Band, and perform at the annual
Chamber Concert in small ensembles.

William R. Goetz earned his Bachelor of Music Education

(2000) and Master of Music Education (2003) from the

his time in Joliet the Washington Band was awarded Honors
Status at the Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA)
State Festival three times, and he co-directed the Joliet All-City
Band in their performance at the 2005 Illinois Music Education
Association All-State Conference. Mr. Goetz was a recipient of
the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award, and the
IGSMA Barbara Buehlman Young Conductor’s Award.

Mr. Goetz has been teaching Band at Troy Community Consolidated School District
30-C since 2006. He is the director of the Troy Middle School Symphonic Band and
under his direction the band has been awarded Honors Status at IGSMA State Festival
and has been invited to participate in the prestigious University of Illinois SuperState
Concert Band Festival. He also teaches beginning brass and percussion, the TMS Cadet
and Marching Bands, and assists with the Concert Band and the 6th Grade Intermediate
and Cadet Bands. He presented the clinic session “Teach, Reteach, and Reinforce:
Philosophy & Strategies for Teaching Successful First & Second-Year Bands” at the 2011
Illinois Music Education Conference.
Jennifer Carlton earned her Bachelor of Music Education
(2001) and Master of Music Education (2017) from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Ms. Carlton’s career
in education began by teaching band at various Catholic grade
schools in the Chicagoland area. She began teaching at Troy
Community Consolidated School District 30-C in 2005 as a
general music and choir teacher at Heritage Trail Elementary
School. In 2007, she was accepted into her current position
