Teddie-Joy Remhild

saddened to discover that 7HGGLH-R\
5HPKLOGpassed away recently. Ms.
Remhild was a blind mother, former
program director, educator, disability
rights activist, prodigious writer, and
incredible source of inspiration for the
disability community. She had a
contagious enthusiasm, positive
outlook on life, and profound
determination in advocating on
behalf of individuals with disabilities.
She had impeccable skills with
assessing, articulating, and addressing
the needs of the disability community.
Her name appeared frequently in
numerous records of disability
commission meetings and disability
rights publications. For more

She is a survivor of a congenital heart
defect - Tetralogy of Fallot - and
although she missed the at birth heart
test due to her critical condition. It's likely
her deafness may have been caused by
ototoxic antibiotics during her recovery
from surgery at 8 weeks of age. She also
meets the challenges of ASD,
developmental delays, a vision
impairment, and scoliosis - and has
continued to grow and learn and inspire

CEREMONY
AADQ had the honor of viewing The
Learning Academy's graduation at Teri, Inc.
in Southern California on May 23, 2018.
Graduates are marking their transition to
adulthood with achieving milestones in
academic, vocational, and social skills.
Peers performed songs as supporters
applauded graduates during the joyous
occasion.

Ms. Wiener, retiree and musical therapist at

Teri, Inc. for the past 20 years, wrote
individualized songs for each graduate. Her
lyrics colorfully described their exceptional
abilities and accomplishments.

Teri, Inc. faculty and staff did a phenomenal

job of preparing students and beautifully
accenting the stage with vibrant, cheerful,
celebratory signs and decorations, as well
as creating a lovely reception area.

Lyft is all about improving people’s lives with
the world’s best transportation. Today, we’re
announcing two product improvements and
a partnership to empower our deaf and hard-
of-hearing drivers, paving the way for
smoother rides all around.
Amped-Up Ride Requests:
Lyft drivers who are deaf or hard of hearing
have told us that they often lose out on rides
because they miss the audible “ping” that
typically alerts drivers to a ride request. Here’s
where Amp — Lyft’s new, in-car
communication device — comes in. Deaf
and hard-of-hearing drivers will now see new
ride requests displayed on their Amp device,
with text reading “NEW RIDE.” This is just one
more way that Amp continues to better
connect our drivers and passengers.
Passenger Notifications:
Passengers will also experience a new app
feature, letting them know that their driver is
deaf or hard of hearing before their Lyft
arrives. Through an SMS notification,
passengers will be alerted to contact their
driver by text rather than by phone, and to be
sure to let the driver lead the way with
communication.
National Association of the Deaf Partnership:
We’re also excited to announce a new
partnership with the National Association of
the Deaf (NAD). Through this partnership, Lyft
and NAD will work together to develop further
app improvements, grow awareness of
economic opportunities for the deaf and
hard-of-hearing, and engage policymakers
on the importance of ridesharing access.
With these product improvements and this
new partnership, we’re committed to
continuing to deliver a seamless, safe, and
innovative experience for our diverse Lyft

partnership with the National Federation of
the Blind, which has led the way in
advocating for the advancement of the
blind and low vision community.  
Access to affordable and flexible
transportation can make a big difference in
the lives of passengers with vision disabilities.
But for many of these passengers,
transportation options are limited.
Through our collaboration with the National
Federation of the Blind, we’re working to
increase awareness of blind passengers’
rights, implement effective public policies,
and expand transportation options for those
who are blind or low vision.  
Here are some of the ways our partnership is
improving the ride experience for blind
passengers:
Improving our app
We’re working alongside National Federation
of the Blind’s Access Technology staff to
make our app more accessible to blind
passengers. Educating the public and
policymakers We’re collaborating with the
National Federation of the Blind to educate
the public and policymakers on the
importance of access to transportation, and
how ridesharing can improve the lives of
blind passengers. We’re also participating in
the National Federation of the Blind’s
National Convention this summer in Orlando.
Educating drivers
With the help of the National Federation of
the Blind, we have updated Lyft’s service
animal policy for riders to provide clear
instructions for drivers so they can offer
welcoming and comfortable rides to blind
and low vision passengers. Lyft is also
committing to ongoing education to its
driver community about the policy, and why
it’s important to blind and low vision riders.
At Lyft, we celebrate a diverse culture where
everyone feels welcome and respected. Our
partnership with the National Federation of
the Blind reflects an important step in our
commitment to bringing the world’s best

What is digital literacy? How can one
acquire it? When do we need it? Digital
literacy is the ability to understand/use
digital devices and interpret digital content.
Digital literacy is required on a daily basis for
tasks such as communication, work related
activities, school assignments, shopping, travel,
recreation. Digital literacycan fill a
communication gap for individuals with
difficulty speaking or articulating words.
$Xtism([SUHVVHG provides specialized training/
lessons to help adolescents develop their
digital literacy/life skills. They have different
modules for understanding the Internet,
safety, daily activities, education, and
professional development.

UCLA Extension offers a variety of courses for
adults with diverse interests. This includes
Pathway, a specialized curriculum for students
with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. "Pathway at UCLA Extension is a
two-year certificate program for students with
intellectual and other developmental
disabilities, offering a blend of educational,
social, and vocational experiences, taught
and supervised by experienced

instructors sensitive to the individual needs of

attend classes and participate with UCLA
students in the many social, recreational, and
cultural activities of a major university."

Shouko Nishimiya is the main female protagonist
of Koe no Katachi (聲の形), Shape of Voice in
English. She is a shy girl with the disability of
profound deafness. This means that she cannot
hear anything at all without assistance (her
hearing aids). One thing that makes Shouko
interesting is the trials she faces. In elementary
school, Shouko was often targeted by bullies,
most notably Shouya Ishida, the main male
antagonist. She has difficulty finding anyone
to really talk to aside from her younger sister

Harry & Meghan: Seeing Royalty in
Their Humanitarianism
An estimated 2 billion people around the
globe watched the 2018 Royal Wedding
AADQ, we think it is the beautiful
character of these young humanitarians.
Both of their mothers were humanitarian
advocates who instilled the importance of
empathy for people who are suffering.
Harry's mother, Princess Diana, started an
international campaign to stop the use of
land mines that detonated on children,
causing loss of their limbs or lives.
Meghan's mother, "Princess Doria" in our
book, is a retired social worker.
Harry and Meghan's humanitarian
projects promote respect for individuals
with disabilities. Harry launched the
Invictus Games Foundation to support
veterans with disabilities. Congratulations
to the newlyweds with a resoundingly
positive and global impact!
