Morphology of Y' and Y" Precipitates and

Thermal Stability of Inconel 718 Type Alloys

The p r e c i p i t a t i o n of the 7 ' (L12) and V" (DO22) p h a s e s has been s t u d i e d in four a l l o y s
F e - N i - C r - T i - A 1 - N b containing a h i g h e r T i + A1/Nb r a t i o than that of the INCONEL 718 a l l o y .
F o r t h e s e a l l o y s , the p r e c i p i t a t i o n m i c r o s t r u c t u r e v a r i e s r a p i d l y with aging t e m p e r a t u r e
and c o m p o s i t i o n . Bet V " p a r t i c l e s have a l w a y s been found to p r e c i p i t a t e on V' p h a s e . M o r e -
o v e r , by aging t h r e e a l l o y s above a c r i t i c a l t e m p e r a t u r e , a " c o m p a c t m o r p h o l o g y " has been
o b s e r v e d : c u b e - s h a p e d 7 ' p a r t i c l e s c o a t e d on t h e i r s i x f a c e s with a s h e l l of V " p r e c i p i t a t e .
T h i s m i c r o s t r u c t u r e has p r o v e d to be v e r y s t a b l e on p r o l o n g e d a g i n g . A t h e r m a l s t a b i l i t y
b e t t e r than that e n c o u n t e r e d in n o m i n a l INCONEL 718 a l l o y can thus be a c h i e v e d . The i n f l u -
ence of c o m p o s i t i o n and aging t e m p e r a t u r e on the conditions that b r i n g about this " c o m p a c t
m o r p h o l o g y " has b e e n i n v e s t i g a t e d . A m i n i m a l T i + A1/Nb r a t i o b e t w e e n 0.9 and 1 has b e e n
d e t e r m i n e d , allowing the " c o m p a c t m o r p h o l o g y " to be o b t a i n e d .

F e - 1 6 C r , K i r m a n and W a r r i n g t o n 2 have shown [hat 1200~ in an a r g o n a t m o s p h e r e . S p e c i m e n s of 8 by 8
both the y ' and y " p h a s e s a r e found when 1.8 T i and by 10 m m w e r e then cut f r o m t h e s e b a r s .

H a r d n e s s v a r i a t i o n s of a l l o y s 2 and 3 a f t e r aging O
a t 650 ~ 700 ~ and 750~ a r e shown in F i g . 1. The

r e l a t i v e l y slow aging r e s p o n s e is t y p i c a l of t h e s e
c o m p o s i t i o n s .4 It is to be noted that h a r d n e s s p e a k s
a r e obtained with a l l o y 2 a t 700 ~ and 750~ but not o
with a l l o y 3 aged a t the s a m e t e m p e r a t u r e s . T h i s
b e t t e r t h e r m a l s t a b i l i t y of a l l o y 3 is shown in F i g . 2,
on which the h a r d e n i n g of a l l o y s 1, 2, 3 up to 524 h a t

T h e f l a t f a c e s of cube s h a p e d p a r t i c l e s p r o b a b l y f a v o r
the n u c l e a t i o n and g r o w t h of 7" on 7 ' . H o w e v e r t h i s
f a c t o r i s thought to be of s e c o n d a r y i m p o r t a n c e . I n -
d e e d , if a l l o y 3 is a g e d a t 730 ~ and 740~ for a s h o r t
t i m e (t < 2 h), i s o l a t e d cube s h a p e d 7 ' p r e c i p i t a t e s a r e
o b s e r v e d . T h e s e p a r t i c l e s do not allow the c o m p a c t
m o r p h o l o g y to be a c h i e v e d d u r i n g f u r t h e r aging a t
these temperatures.
The e x p e r i m e n t a l r e s u l t s s u g g e s t that the m a i n
f a c t o r might be the i n i t i a l s i z e of 7 ' p r e c i p i t a t e s b e f o r e
the f o r m a t i o n of 7" p a r t i c l e s . It has been shown that
the c o m p a c t m o r p h o l o g y could only be obtained if the
i s o l a t e d 7 ' p r e c i p i t a t e s has r e a c h e d a m i n i m u m c r i t i -
c a l s i z e . By c o n s i d e r i n g the b e h a v i o r of a l l o y 2 a t
770~ a l l o y 3 a t 745~ and a l l o y 4 at 775~ this
