The universe and the soul: inseparably bound up
together in mathematical harmony. Though Pythag-
oras had shared these thoughts in the sixth century
BC, his ideas were still resonating in the late Dark
Ages. The concept of musica universalis, and the
understanding that people could absorb the cosmos
through music, would be a source of inspiration for
numerous later philosophers and musicians. The
century-old ideas have, just like music, never left
humanity.
Following Pythagoras, the Amstel Quartet also brings
an ode to the cosmos. In order to do so, it places its
focus exclusively on two modern-day composers:
Hugues Dufourt and Wim Henderickx.
The spectral music of Dufourt detaches itself from
traditions and takes, as composer Joshua Fineberg

once put it, ‘the central belief that music is ultimate-
ly sound evolving in time’, as its principal starting
point. Cultural constructions, in which music is often
roaming, are avoided: only the cosmos and the soul of
humanity will be addressed.
Wim Henderickx adds, with his contribution, the
elements of nature to the programme. The cosmic
relations between humanity, the earth, wind, water
and fire are accentuated in his compositions, per-
fectly complementing the universal works of Dufourt.
Moreover, Henderickx calls the attention of the public
to the Indian approach of the cosmological principle
in The Seven Chakras. Here, the universe is not fas-
tened in the human soul, but rather floats at all times
through the energy of the body of men. The spatial,
electronic sounds that will accompany the quartet
within this work, could not have suggested otherwise.

Het heelal en de ziel: ze zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar
verbonden in een mathematische harmonie. Hoewel
Pythagoras deze gedachte al in de zesde eeuw voor
Christus deelde, heeft het tot ver in de Middeleeuw-
en zijn weerklank gekend. De kennis dat mensen de
kosmos in zich op konden nemen door middel van
muziek sprak tot de verbeelding van latere denkers,
maar ook voor vele muzikanten is het concept van
musica universalis nog altijd een bron van inspiratie.
De eeuwenoude ideeën hebben de mens, evenals de
muziek, nooit echt verlaten.
In navolging van Pythagoras, brengt ook het Amstel
Quartet een ode aan de kosmos. In zijn programma
legt het zich in het bijzonder toe op twee eigentijdse
componisten: Hugues Dufourt en Wim Henderickx.
De spectrale muziek van Dufourt maakt zich los van
tradities en heeft ‘de geleidelijke evolutie van geluid’,
zoals componist Joshua Fineberg het ooit beschreef,

als principiële uitgangspunt. Culturele constructies,
waarin muziek veelal gevangen zit, worden verme-
den: enkel de kosmos en de ziel van de mens worden
aangesproken.
Wim Henderickx voegt op zijn beurt de natuurele-
menten aan het programma toe. De kosmische relat-
ies van de mens met de aarde, de lucht, het water
en het vuur worden in zijn composities benadrukt,
waarmee het fraaie aanvullingen zijn op het uni-
versele werk van Dufourt. Bovendien legt Henderickx
het publiek met zijn The Seven Chakras een Indiase
benadering van het kosmologische principe voor:
hier is het heelal niet terug te vinden in de ziel, maar
stroomt het te allen tijde door het energielichaam van
de mens. De ruimtelijke, elektronische klanken die
het kwartet bij het werk zullen ondersteunen, zouden
ook niets anders kunnen vermoeden.
