Due Friday 10/27

Answer the following questions as completely as possible.

1. Hexadecimal represents binary chunks of what size? How many characters are available in
hexadecimal? Represent the 8 bit binary code in hexadecimal 01011100.
2. What must be true about a compression strategy for it to be lossless?
3. Give an example of a lossless compression.
4. What is the difference between lossless and lossy compression?
5. Give an example of lossy compression.
6. What is metadata? Give an example.
7. Explain why there is not a set algorithm for compressing all data? What is it called when perfect
protocol cannot be found?
8. What is a compression rate and how is it calculated?
9. When you were trying to get the best compression rate for your song/poem what did you have
to consider and is too much compression a bad thing? Explain
10. If you had a picture that contained colors that were very dark and hard to see would the color
values be closest too. How is this different then mixing paint colors?
11. What three colors represent digital images? Does their order matter? Why? How many bits
usually represent each color and how many possibilities for each color are there?
12. If you wanted to lighten a picture that was very dark and you added 10 to each color value
would this be an example of lossy or lossless compression? Why? What if you added 200?
13. 32bits
14. Put the following data storage units in order from least to greatest Gigabyte, Terabyte,
Megabyte, Kilobyte
15. How many Kilobytes are in a Gigabyte? How many Megabytes are in a Terabyte?
16. If you were storing a word document what would be a common storage size(just units)
17. If you were storing a video that was 1-2 hours long what would be the storage unit?
18. If you were storing an image what would a common storage unit be?
19. If you needed to change from 12 bits to 24 bit representations this would be the same as adding
how many more possible choices (2 to what power)?
20. Why does a file that is 5 bytes take up 1 KB of storage?
