Step-by-Step Lesson Elements

Student Name: Kasey Jacobs

Grade Level: 8th grade Subject Area: Science

1. State Standards:
2. Students know that plants and animals have levels of organization for structure and function, including cells, tissues, organs,
organ systems, and the whole organism.
3. Students know the structures and processes by which flowering plants generate pollen, ovules, seeds, and fruit.
4. Students know that mitochondria liberate energy for the work that cells do and that chloroplasts capture sunlight energy for
photosynthesis.
5. Students know cells function similarly in all living organisms. b. Students know the characteristics that distinguish plant cells
from animal cells, including chloroplasts and cell walls.
6. Students know the nucleus is the repository for genetic information in plant and animal cells.

7. Lesson Objective(s) & Targeted Outcome(s):

● Students will be able to name the main parts of a seed. Students will be able to find the parts of a seed in a lima bean.
Students will be able to name 3 common plants we eat the fruit to. Students will be able name 3 common seeds that we
eat the whole seed. Students will be able to tell where seeds are found on a plant.

8. Materials & Resources:

Lima beans, iodine, powerpoint, seeds worksheet, “My Tiny Seed Book”
9. Knowing the Students:
Students will have to be able to know what plants are and the basic functions of plants
10. Literacy Connection:
Students will read an excerpt about seeds and underline important information
11. Technology Integration:
Google Slides, video

Time Accommodations
Introduction/Activate Prior Knowledge:
5 min KWL on plants. What do they know about plants? What do they want to know about
plants? What possible experiments can we do with plants from our questions?
Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. Introduce seeds by watching a video on the powerpoint
2. After the video ask students, “what is the purpose of a seed?”
3. Go to next slide in powerpoint, explain that plants make seeds to reproduce.
Ask students “do you think all plants make seeds?” Students will raise their
hand and make guesses
4. Go to the next slide and tell them that not all plants make seeds, some plants
make spores in the place of seeds (like moss, fungi, and ferns) Students will
fill in their worksheet with the correct answer
5. Go to the next slide, show the students a picture of what a spore looks like
versus a seed
6. Ask students “where would you find a seed on a plant?” After students come
up with their own understandings, go to the next slide and show the answer
35 min 7. Ask students, “where are some common seeds that we eat the whole seed?”
Have students share out. After sharing out, go to the next slide and show
some options
8. Ask students, “what are some plants that we eat the fruit, but not usually the
seed?” Have students share out, then go to the next slide and see if their
answers are correct.
9. Have students read silently the excerpt from the worksheet, after they have Students read once on their own, then
read it on their own, read it out loud. read out loud
10. Ask students, “what is seed dispersal?” Have students share out.
11. Ask students, “why would a plant want to perform seed dispersal?” Have Spell answers on the board
students share out
12. Have students fill out the next part of their worksheet on their own (plant and
how it is dispersed) After students are finished, ask students how each plant
disperses its seeds.
2
13. Go to the next slide. Explain the parts of a seed and their functions.
14. Go to the next slide. Have students cut out and label parts of a seed on their Give students an example of what it
own in a small booklet, students are able to keep their seed booklet. looks like
15. Take out lima bean and gather around the small table. Split lima bean in half,
ask students where cotyledon, seed coat, epicotyl, hypocotyl, radicle, and
embryo are

Closure
5 min Ask students questions at the end of lesson, such as what makes up an embryo?
What is a seed we eat? Where is food stored? Where can we find seeds?
10. Assessment & Evaluation:
Ask students where parts of a seed are on a lima bean
Questioning throughout the learning process
At the end of the lesson, ask questions to see if they remember what they were
taught and to emphasis main points

11. Reflection (after teaching lesson):
