I. EQUIPMENT

II. PROCEDURE

Part I.

The materials needed for the experiment were prepared. The mold was then coated with
petroleum jelly to prevent the cement from sticking to the mold. The vicat apparatus was then
calibrated, setting it to lower zero on the vicat gage. Then, we placed 500-g of fresh Portland
cement in the mixing pan, forming a crater on top, and poured a measured amount of water,
then the timer starts. After, we thoroughly mixed it in the pan using trowel for 30 seconds, and
another 30 seconds for absorption. We squeezed and kneaded the mixture for another 30
seconds. The paste was then formed into a ball and tossed between hands for 6 times at a
distance of 6 inches. The paste was then placed on the mold, trimmed and smoothen using the
spatula. The plate with the mold was placed below the vicat needle, the screw was loosened
right on top of the cement paste. The reading was taken after 30 seconds the needle was
released.
 Part II.

The gillmore needle was prepared together with the glass plates. From the excess
cement paste in part I, a 3-inch base diameter with a ½ inch height and 1 inch top diameter
figure was formed. In testing the initial set, we subjected the formed paste to a ¼ pound weight
and 1/12 inch diameter needle. We waited and timed it until no visible mark was made 30
seconds after the needle was removed. After, we placed a 1 pound weight and 1/24 inch
diameter needle. We waited and timed it until final set is reached, where there is no visible mark
30 seconds after the needle was removed.
