II. PROCEDURE
The equipment and apparatus needed in the experiment were prepared such as the
Vicat apparatus with the mold and plate, trowel, spatula and mixing pan. The mold was then
coated with very thin mineral oil in order to prevent the cement from sticking into the mold as it
hardens and dry. The mold was placed on the glass plate and was positioned under the Vicat
needle, and the Vicat gage was set to the upper zero mark.
About 500 grams of fresh Portland cement was then placed inside the mixing pan. A
crater was formed at the center of the Portland cement and a measured amount of water in a
graduated cylinder was poured. The cement was then troweled into the formed crater for about
30 seconds and another 30 seconds was timed to allow absorption. Then, mixing, kneading and
squeezing of the concrete were accomplished for another 30 seconds in which the hands are
protected with rubber gloves during the entire operation. The cement paste was then formed
into a ball and was tossed between the hands 6 times at 6-inch distance. The cement paste ball
was then inserted into the mold through the bigger diameter and the mold was then placed on
the glass plate. The surface of the paste flushed with the top of the mold was then smoothen
and trimmed. The plate with the mold and cement paste was then placed below the Vicat
needle. The screw was then loosen to lower the needle on top of the cement paste and a
reading was taken 30 seconds after the release. The whole process was then repeated at
different amounts of water until normal consistency value or a reading of 10±1mm was attained.
