NEWSLETTER VOL 1/2005 (Jan-Mar)

How have you been coping with your stress – exams, projects, deadlines, relationships, service and
etc.? Let us learn from Joshua. He was fighting against the Amorites and he knew he could not win
unless the Almighty God fights for him. “Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD
delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun,
stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and
the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this
written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go
down about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD
hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.” (Joshua 10: 12-14)

Can you depend on God as Joshua did? What you’ve just read was a miracle – beyond scientific
explanation. God created the heavens and the earth. Is there anything too difficult for Him? Certainly
not. He caused the sun and moon to stand still. He is the Almighty God. He is able to deliver Joshua. He
is able to deliver you. “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (1 Pet 5:7). He also
promised you that if you “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty
things, which thou knowest not.” (Jer 33:3).

Dear FCMers, don’t fight your battle alone. Pray to God and plead His help. Ask for forgiveness of sins
and live a victorious Christian life. Will you say……”God, help me”?

The God of the impossible

I don’t know how God hangs the world on nothing,
Or how He keeps the planets each in place,
I cannot count the sands upon the seashore,
Nor can I count the stars that float in space.

Chorus:
But God can do what seems impossible;
God controls eternity.
My mind can never comprehend it,
But God in heaven cares for me.

I don’t know how the Lord can save a sinner,

Or how His grace can cleanse and set him free.
I can’t explain the mystery of Calv’ry,
To think that Jesus died for even me.

I don’t know all the meaning of ‘forever’,

Or just how long it’s been since time began.
I can’t explain how Christ Who is eternal,
Could come to earth and die for sinful man. (Words and Music: Frank Garlock, 1930 - )

Romans 5:8: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us.”

Yes indeed. The Lord loves us, and He confirms this by His actions – suffering and dying on the cross
for us: “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of
no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being
found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the
cross.” (Phi 2:6-8)

We are God’s children and have been saved because of His love. If we say we love
Him; we must do something for Him! We must show our love by our actions as Christ
our Lord did! Love without action is not genuine love at all!

As I look at the old photographs of people whom I know from my previous church, I
realize that many have matured and aged. Many years have simply passed by like the
twinkling of an eye. I realize that very soon I will be like them. I recognize that my life is
insignificant like what God says in the epistle of James. “…For what is your life? It is
even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (Jas 4:14).

Indeed, I really ponder as I gaze upon those pictures:

“Will the Lord find me faithful from now until I reach their age? Will I have done my best for the
Lord till then? Whether these friends of mine have been faithful and fruitful in the Lord all these
years of their lives, I really do not know. All I know is that I do not want to waste my life away. I
want to do as much as I can for the Lord. I want to be a blessing unto others!”

Truly, these thoughts spurred me on to earnestly redeem the time for the Lord as I meditate upon the
following verses:

“LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may
know how frail I am.”
Psalms 39:4

“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto
wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12

“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the
years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them”
Ecclesiastes 12:1

“But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of,
knowing of whom thou hast learned them;”
2 Tim. 3:14

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay
aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the
race that is set before us”
Hebrews 12:1
2005 FCM Newsletter, Jan – Mar 3

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because
the days are evil.”
Ephesians 5:15-16

“Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.”
Colossians 4:5

My friends, will you endeavour to redeem the time with me too? Do you have this burning desire in you
to do as much as you can for the Lord according to the measure of grace He has given us? Do you want
to grow old being a fruitless and unproductive Christian? Is this how we repay our Lord Jesus Christ who
has suffered so much for us?

Let us forsake our wicked and selfish ways, desires and endeavours
right now at this very moment! Let us not say we will serve Him only
after we have finished our studies or stabilized our career! Let us not
live for ourselves anymore! Rather, let us make every moment of our
lives count for the Lord because very soon, we will be gone.
Moreover, our Lord is coming soon!

Yes indeed, one thing we cannot change is that, God-willing, twenty to thirty years will just zoom past
without us knowing it. However, one thing we can change is that we can make our lives count for the
Lord! We can express our sincere gratitude by using our time from now till then to serve the King of
kings and Lord of lords and be a blessing unto others!

My friends, won’t you start do something to serve the Lord today?

A wretched sinner saved to serve the Lord,

INTRODUCTION:

Ever wondered why “fellowship” comprises the words “fellow” and “ship”? Simply get two fellows
(Christian brothers or sisters) in a ship (or in our case, a canoe) and you will soon find out how this is
true! Last November, FCM (NTU-NIE) got a first-hand experience of the wind and waves off Changi
beach at East Coast Parkway (former Big Splash) together with a good opportunity for some sweet
fellowship and looking after each other after the Exams – physically and spiritually.

From 22-23 Nov 2004, a group of eight of us from FCM NTU-NIE, together with
our student co-ordinator, Zhihui, signed up for the 1 Star Course at Paddle
Culture. The course lasted 2 days, 8.30 am – 1.30 pm. Since we had already
paid a deposit way before the Exams, there was no backing out at the last
moment. Besides, most of us were actually looking forward to paddling away
the study stress right after our last paper! Despite our initial enthusiasm, on the
first day of our course we encountered grey skies, strong winds and drizzly
weather.

SECTION 1: “TRAINING DAYS”

Day 1
At first, we were ‘land-sick’ and generally a little cautious with the
single-seater river kayaks1, especially during the pool session on the
first day, because nobody wanted to capsize on the first lesson!
Gradually we ‘warmed-up’ and started getting used to the idea of the
paddle as an extension of our arms and the kayak as a vehicle for us
in water – that was when we really started enjoying ourselves and
becoming used to capsizing as part of the whole experience! We
learnt about the parts of the kayak, the paddle, and basic strokes for
moving about in water forwards, backwards, sideways and turning
around from either side. Our first encounter with the sea came in the
afternoon, just as the sun came out and dark clouds parted. For
some of us it must have come as quite a shock, for we were still
inexperienced at using the single-seater kayaks, which posed a
problem for us as beginners taking on the sea for the first time.
Nevertheless, it was a form of exposure and a good test of the few
skills we had just learned.

Day 2
The next morning saw many of us getting sore muscles from the
previous day’s exertion. The weather was even worse than the day
before. In the pool, strangely enough, we exuded more confidence this
time round, even seeing it as a challenge to execute the capsize drill and T-
rescue. As an incentive, we would be paddling down a short stretch of coastline to Macdonald’s for

1
“Canoe” and “kayak” have nearly interchangeable meanings in our local context. Although both vessels use paddles,
canoes are more ‘open-concept’, while kayaks are usually more covered than canoes.
2005 FCM Newsletter, Jan – Mar 9

lunch. We were then paired up to go to sea in sturdier 2-seater canoes. This time with two working
together as one, despite the longer journey and the slight drizzle, we made it to our destination in good
time and in high spirits. After lunch, we paddled back and thus ended the 2-day basic canoeing course.

SECTION 2: “LESSONS LEARNT”

After this brief course, I can now reflect on three aspects of it applied in a spiritual
sense.

First, in signing up for canoeing together, we had deliberately made an opportunity

to meet up with like-minded Christian brethren, which reflects our mutual
accountability to each other before the Lord. The class size was 12 on the first day, so with
the 8 of us from FCM, we were the majority, and the warmth of Christian fellowship and brotherly love
permeated such an environment. We even found opportunity to interact with the other members of the
class and to find out about their spiritual health (though some were non-Christians). We inquired about
their past experiences with Christianity, got their emails and even invited them to come for meetings in
the following semester! Indeed, this brings to mind our Lord using Peter’s fishing-boat as a platform for
preaching to the crowds that filled the entire shore (Matt 13:1-2). May the Lord even use our recreation
time and activities for the extension of His Kingdom on earth!

Second, learning the basics of parts of the kayak and learning how to paddle in the sea made me think
back on how one has to start from simple strokes and be disciplined enough to practise and apply
whatever has been taught. Indeed, through constant revision and discipline, in the physical, just as in
the spiritual, a concerted effort and a ‘never-say-die’ attitude do make a difference. I suppose that might
be one of the reasons why Paul used the analogy of an athlete training his body to illustrate the fact that
we must put our heart, mind and strength into running life’s race in the spiritual sense (1 Cor 9:24-27).
From what we observed, those who are skilful at paddling certainly make every stroke in the water
count!

Third, the value of working together as members of the body of Christ: be it from getting ‘lost’ together
and finding the place on the first day, to washing and carrying those heavy ocean kayaks back and forth
from the beach to the shed, to rescuing each other during the capsize drill. All these could never be
achieved by individual effort. Only by working together as a team to help each other and trusting in the
Lord did we see progress. Even the very act of placing all our ‘valuables’ in one locker (in case they got
damaged or lost at sea) in some way resembled that we really “had all things common” (Acts 4:32b).
Despite the companionship of fellow believers, we were even more comforted by the thought that our
Lord Jesus was with us, even out
there on the restless sea, just as He
was in Galilee a long time ago, in a
small boat with His disciples. So, if
you want to find new ways of
fellowshipping with your fellow
FCMers, then you might want to take
your paddles and head to sea…
Remember, with Christ in the vessel,
we can smile at the storm! ☺

This year’s YAF Missions Trip to Sri Lanka took place from 24 – 30 November. Initially the
trip was scheduled to take place about a week earlier to take advantage of the long stretch of
public holidays to accommodate our working adults. A number of YAFers had also expressed desire to
join in this missions trip. However due to various commitments, both work and personal, some were
unable to make it and it was only after much delay that we could confirm the number of team members
and the departure date. Thank God for the final team of 9 people who could join in this missions trip.
Though it started off as a YAF missions trip, thank God that other church members and friends (even
from as far as True Life B-P Church!) could join us to minister to the brethren in Sri Lanka.

The team comprised of Dennis and Yumin, Mr and Mrs John Loo, Zuyi, Herbert, Anthony, Boon Choo
and myself. Led by A-P Dennis Kwok, our objectives for this missions trip were:

♦ To strengthen the youth’s and children’s spiritual needs

♦ To provoke the chapel brethren to godly Christian living and witness
for Jesus
♦ To fellowship with the chapel brethren
♦ To assist in preaching/ teaching ministry
♦ To teach new English hymn/ choruses to the chapel brethren

Our team only got together for meetings in early November; prior to that many were tied up at work and
school. Despite the late start, thank God for seeing us through 3 weeks of planning. The team is also
rather well-balanced, with 4 brothers sharing the preaching duties and 5 sisters involved in the teaching
ministry; in this way, the work could be shared more evenly and effectively. We were assigned various
duties at the start such that we could be effective in our various roles over there. For example, Boon
Choo was in charge of all singspiration and would assign us our various duties, while Yumin stuck with
what she does best ☺: planning games for the children and youth who enjoyed the games very much.

24th November finally arrived and as we gathered at the airport, we were encouraged by the presence of
some of the YAFers and friends who had come to send us off. Initially, some of us in the team were a
little uncertain about how and what we could do over there, considering it was our first missions trip to
Sri Lanka, however the sharings of brethren who had gone on previous missions trips did help us in our
preparations (both physical and spiritual needs) for the trip. After some delay the plane finally took off 50
minutes behind schedule. Thank God for a smooth flight to Sri Lanka where we were greeted by Vijay
and his team who sent us to the hotel for early rest that night.

Every morning the team would gather together and have a time of devotion. The
brothers would take turns to exhort from a passage of scripture before the team
committed the day’s activities to the Lord in a time of prayer. Likewise in the
evenings we would have a nightly evaluation and reflection as we summarised the
day’s programmes and looked at how we could improve upon it before closing the
session with a prayer. Truly it was important to begin and end the day with the Lord
as we reminded ourselves that everything is done through the Lord and not
through our own strength (“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain
that build it:” Psalms 127:1).

During our missions trip, the chapel brethren have shown much hospitality by taking it upon themselves
to prepare breakfast for the team every morning and the occasional dinners. Following a short walk to
the chapel from the hotel (our morning exercise!), breakfast fellowship usually took place at the chapel’s
kitchenette.
2005 FCM Newsletter, Jan – Mar 11

Day 1
On the first morning bright and cheery, we had a
good time of breakfast fellowship in the hotel, with
the food lovingly prepared by Mrs Paul Hoole,
while we discussed the day’s activities as well as
tried to find out more about the needs of the
people there so as to minister to them more
effectively. This was followed by a short walk to
the chapel (morning exercise!) where we spent
some time visiting the chapel and talking to the
chapel brethren. Thank God for the newly
renovated chapel, where the sanctuary is bigger
and brighter to accommodate more worshippers.
In addition, a shelter was also built at one side of
the chapel to allow the Sunday Schools, nursery
and kindergarten children to have activities there
rain or shine.

At 1130am, we embarked on our 2 hour

journey to the village at Kalutura, where
Raja’s (the chapel’s driver) family stayed.
The village with its never ending greenery
of trees, rocks and hills was a refreshing
change of scenery from that of concrete
buildings and metal structures which we
had seen in downtown Colombo. The air
was also more refreshing and cooling
compared to the city area. The aim of
this visit was to reach out to the villagers
(mainly rubber tappers) staying in this
area who have not heard the gospel.
The Chapel has been ministering to this
area for the past two years. Initially, the
people there were rather resistant to the
Word of God, but thank God that things have started to change for
the better and these days more people are willing to listen to the gospel and have become
more attentive too during messages.

The team had been expecting a small group of adults who would be willing to listen to the Word of God,
however we were pleasantly surprised by a great number of children who came by, eager to hear what
the ‘foreigners’ have to say to them. Thank God for the overwhelming response at Raja’s house, so
much so that some of us had to stand outside the house to allow more villagers to make their way into
the house. In all about 25 people (mostly children) packed into the small house as Dennis shared the
gospel message with them. Though none publicly accepted Christ that day, thank God that the gospel
seed has been sown in the young hearts.

We have heard much about the hospitality of the Sri Lankan people and the moment the message was
over, Raja’s family came to serve everyone with a freshly brewed cup of Ceylon tea. After some time of
refreshments and photo- taking, we proceeded to the next house in the vicinity, this time to the home of
Joseph (the former chapel driver) to encourage his family who were worshipping at the Methodist church
in the village. Here, Anthony spoke on the topic of the origin of sin which started with our first parents

Adam and Eve when they disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit; that was why all men are born in
sin and how Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. May we continue to pray for the chapel’s ministry in
this area even as they continue to reach out to the children and adults in the village during future visits.
2005 FCM Newsletter, Jan – Mar 12

Day 2

A 5-hour Youth Programme was held on the second day at the

chapel and began at 9 am with some ice-breakers led by
Yumin. The youths and the chapel brethren enjoyed the
games session very much as they have not had such
activities before. After warming up to each other, the youths
were then taught several action songs by Boon Choo during
singspiration. The theme of the Youth Programme was on
the Ten Commandments and Dennis began with an
introduction of the Ten Commandments, how the Word of
God is a sword, lamp and rod in our lives which constantly
guide us along life’s pathway. Herbert shared on the first
four commandments which dealt with a Christian’s duty to
God while Anthony spoke on the remaining six commandments which dealt with
duty to Man. Dennis then concluded and summarized the main points of what had been spoken which
was followed by lunch fellowship with the youths in the chapel.

We were also tasked to teach the chapel brethren new songs

from the book “Songs in the Night”; this we did, with each team
member taking turns to lead and teach the chapel brethren a
total of 16 songs over 2 singing sessions. The first singing
session began in the afternoon right after the Youth
Programme. In the late afternoon, some of us also ministered
to 2 teenage girls, of whom one is a believer while the other is
a Roman Catholic to share the gospel and encourage them.
We also managed to visit 2 homes that night, with one group
(led by Dennis) ministering at the home of a youth who
attends the chapel occasionally while the other group visited the home of a
couple who were members of the church but whose daughter was still unsaved.
2005 FCM Newsletter, Jan – Mar 13

Day 3

Saturday, the third day of the missions trip saw the sisters having a
busy day as the Children’s Programme commenced that morning.
Thank God for the good response: a total of 62 children came to attend
the programme. The children were divided into 2 groups to facilitate the
teaching of the bible lesson and the art and craft session. Many of
these children come from the nearby slum areas and may not have
heard the gospel before or attended Sunday school before, thus Mrs
Loo’s bible lesson on Creation was timely and appropriate (this was
translated into both Tamil and Sinhalese). Meanwhile, there was also
much activity going on in the classroom downstairs as the rest of us led
some of the children in making a plaque which says “The Lord is my
Shepherd”, to remind them that God is our Guide and the great
Shepherd and that we are His sheep. The children listened attentively
to the message and were very diligent in their craft work. All the children’s work were then strung up and
hung around a fence creating a mini “exhibition” while waiting for the glue to dry. In between lunch time
and tea breaks, the children would gather round the fence where they gleefully showed their works to
their friends. A telematch was also organized for the children and lunch was provided for all of them by
the chapel. The day’s session ended off with a mini “plaque presentation” before the children were
driven home in the commuter. Though by this time we were totally exhausted yet we thanked God for
the smooth running of the programme and all glory be to His name. Later that evening, we continued
with our singing session before joining in the Prayer Meeting.

Day 4
Sunday being the Lord’s Day saw all of us at the Chapel for
the 9am Tamil Worship Service where A-P Dennis preached
the message entitled “On What Are You Building Your Life?”
based on Matthew 7:24-27. After the service, the team helped
out in the Tamil Sunday School (about 40 children in all), with
Mrs Loo teaching the older children on the Christian Armour
while Yumin led the younger children in Sunday school. The
older children managed to make a scroll depicting a
Christian soldier and his armour and the bible verse
(Ephesians 6:11) while the younger children made animal
masks.

In the evening, some of us attended the English Worship

Service with the main message delivered by A-P Dennis on “Keeping the
Profitable Sin” based on 1 Kings 20:39-43 while others were involved in the English Sunday School
which takes place concurrently with the Worship Service.

Day 5

On the last day of the missions trip we visited the home of an elderly church member who had diabetes
and was unable to attend worship service. We sang some hymns with him and Mr Loo shared from the
Word of God to encourage him as well. This was followed by a visit to the slum areas where we
managed to see some of the children who had attended the Children’s Programme and Sunday Schools
over the last few days.

Later that evening we gathered at Dr Paul Hoole’s place for dinner and had a time of evaluation and
discussion with the rest of the chapel brethren (with regards to the various activities that had taken place
over the past few days).
2005 FCM Newsletter, Jan – Mar 14

End notes

I thank God for this opportunity to be able to join in this

missions trip and for putting all of us together as a team. It has
been a wonderful experience to see His marvellous work in Sri
Lanka and looking back we are truly very blessed here in
Singapore, how often we take things for granted (availability of
resources, warm fellowship, freedom and ease of worship,
etc.) I believe this missions trip has been a spiritually uplifting
time for many of us as we were constantly serving together in
the company of like-minded brethren and having morning
devotions daily and debrief sessions each evening which
helped us start and end the day with God as our focus and
purpose.

May we all continue to remember and pray for the brethren in Sri Lanka, where the harvest is indeed
plentiful but the labourers are few. There is a need for more people to go over and assist them in their
ministry while they wait for their people to be trained in the Word of God. May the Lord touch your hearts
to serve Him in this area of ministry in the coming years.

Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father and Saviour Lord Jesus Christ. By God’s
grace, I was introduced to FCM through my sister, Yifan and some brethren from my church – Faith BP
church. Ever since I joined FCM 1 ½ years ago, the Lord has been ministering to me abundantly as I dig
into His Holy Word and through the sweet fellowship with like-minded Christians. Despite worshipping at
different churches, the Triune God who has redeemed us from death and hell, translated us from
darkness unto light, lifted us from sin to grace and shall at last receive us by grace into glory, binds all of
us together. “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm
133:1)

I thank and praise God for FCM’s emphasis on God’s Word. Indeed, “…the word of God is quick,
and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and
spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”(Hebrews
4:12), convicting me of my lukewarm heart and sinfulness towards Him, thus stirring me to humble
myself before Him and eventually yield my stubborn will unto Him. Moreover, the truth of God ought to
affect us emotionally that we can have a holy and spontaneous affection for our Lord. Quoting Maurice
Roberts, we ought to strive, when we pray, always to have our hearts aflame before we left off praying
and would not lay our Bible or books down before we had felt our hearts burning within us. Christ is not
mere doctrine, He is a risen glorified Saviour, His love for us today is as great and as real as at the time
when he was suffering for us at the cross. He is as much with us and
ministering to us today by His spirit as in the days of His flesh. May all aspects
of our lives be governed by the precious Word of God. To God be the glory.

Clarice Lim
Hi everyone, I am Clarice Lim, the current FCM Poly student coordinator. I worship at Calvary
Pandan Bible-Presbyterian Church and am in my second year second semester at Ngee Ann
Polytechnic, studying Biotechnology.

It is amazing as I think back about how God has worked in my life. Three years ago, I wouldn’t
have thought that I would go to Poly, much less even serve in such a ministry for Christian Polytechnic
students. Then, I was lost in the world, seeking only the things that would gratify the flesh more than
glorifying God. In fact, I did not know what is meant by glorifying God and was unsure of my salvation. I
came from a non-Christian family, but thankfully, I was told of the Gospel from a tender age of 8 through
the Girls’ Brigade ECA that I joined in Primary school and also through a close Christian auntie of mine. I
once attended an Anglican church (my aunt worshipped there) in secondary 1
and 2 but slowly dropped out because of the cares of the world and also
because of the emphasis on the flowing of emotions during the charismatic
youth worship service which I did not like.

Thank God for my classmate who introduced me to my present church. It was through the teen’s
Bible study sessions in my current church that I came to the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ
as questions posed by my troubled heart were answered. Although I had served in the Girls’ Brigade in
secondary school, worked hand in hand with workers from the supporting chapel and attended church
before, probing questions on my salvation and spiritual life were not asked and answered. So I thank
2005 FCM Newsletter, Jan – Mar 16

God for the effective testimonies from the people and the fundamental teachings of the B-P Church (that
answered these questions).

I grew much in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus since then and the decision to study
in poly instead of JC enables me to have more free time to read and analyze the Bible. At that point in
time, I was also introduced to Poly FCM through Yu Wei and Yu Jie. Thank God for the Poly FCM group
and for FCM in general. FCM was like my main fellowship group since I was not allowed to attend YF. In
the FCM, I had sweet fellowship with like-minded brethren and was very encouraged by the victorious
Christian testimonies of the brethren. The FCM bible study sessions and FCM Camp also taught me
many lessons on applying bible truths in practical Christian living.

Thank God for opening an area to serve in the FCM, where I gained many lessons on service
and how I should serve joyfully and with my best ability because I serve the LORD God. I thank
God for a good semester of Poly FCM meetings last year
and pray for the upcoming ones this year, where the
Poly FCMers will be edified and grow spiritually
through the bible study lessons conducted by
Preacher Ho Chee Lai and be mutually encouraged
through our fellowship one with another.

Even as a new year starts, my resolution for

this year is to die more unto self and to live for Christ,
that in all things Christ might have the preeminence
(Col 1: 18) Let us all press toward the mark for the
prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus as we
start this fresh new year! May God be glorified in all
things! AMEN.
