INTRODUCTION :
Tear film dysfunction is a common condition affecting the ocular surface among the IT
professionals who use computers as one of the commonest tools. However prolonged use of this
leads to risk of developing dry eye ,tension headaches and psychosocial stress. Hence screening and
early detection of these manifestations are important to prevent the serious vision threatening
complications caused by tear film dysfunction, symptoms of discomfort that interfere with quality
of life and find out the correlation between the tear film dysfunction and prolonged computer
usage.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES :

The aim of this study is to evaluate the tear film stability among the IT professionals .

INCLUSION CRITERIA :

 100 IT Professionals between the age group of 20- 40 years.

EXCLUSION CRITERIA :

 subjects with history of previous dry eye

 subjects with known systemic diseases / allergies
 subjects with previous history of topical and oral medications
 contact lens users
 previous history of ocular surgery
 subjects symptomatic but not willing for study

PATIENTS AND METHODOLOGY :

Subjects included in the study will be IT professionals with increased computer usage

working in IT companies in and around Chennai. The study will be conducted for around six

months. The Subjects with or without ocular symptoms will be included in the study.

Informed consent will be taken from all the patients. A detailed history including the details

of the subjects, age, sex, occupation, hours of computer usage, visual symptoms will be

recorded in the proforma. External Ocular examination of lids, conjunctiva, cornea will be

done along with Visual acuity testing using Snellen's chart, near vision testing using Jaeger's

chart. Detailed Dry eye work up using Schirmer’s test, Tear break up time test to rule out

Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca will be done.
