Kelsey
WHEN DANNY LUCAS ASKED the bartender
at Stalking Horse to give him her phone num-
ber, he entered it under “Dreamgirl” in his
& Danny
cell. Not to spoil the rest of this piece, reader,
but he married her. Fast forward to their
very first date: Danny was late, and Kelsey
Haywood, AKA Dreamgirl, suffering from
a stomach bug but not wanting to cancel,
AUGUST 19, 2017 threw up in the bathroom of Metropolitan.
Not an auspicious start but still promising
enough for a second date. It was a joyful and
romantic Fourth of July get-together with
friends and fireworks that truly cemented
their relationship. Five years later, on another
July evening, Kelsey and Danny had packed
a picnic dinner and watched Best In Show
at the American Visionary Art Museum’s
Flicks From the Hill. Unbeknownst to Kelsey,
Danny had been carrying around an engage-
ment ring for six months, waiting for the per-
fect moment. As they walked toward home,
Danny put down all their stuff, got down
on one knee, and nervously held up the ring
box—upside down. There was hugging and
sobbing and kissing and calls to their fami-
lies. “It was perfect,” says Kelsey. “Most spon-
taneous night ever. I was in sweats. No make-
up on. It was the best night ever.”
Well, topped only by a flawless wedding.
Loving the vibe of Tulum, Mexico, with its
low-key glam—but not wanting a destina-
tion wedding—they turned the Chesapeake
Bay Beach Club into a black-tie jungle bash.
“Tulum is bohemian, but so stylish,” says
Kelsey. “It’s laid back, but everything is beau-
tiful. With Tulum, on one side of the street it’s
beach, and on the other side, it’s jungle.” That
was their goal, achieved with elements like
stunning protea, gold spray-painted palms,
and a ceremony overlooking the water.
The two opted out of a first look. So,
Danny saw Kelsey for the first time as she
walked down the aisle. After the ceremony,
the newlyweds slipped away for some por-
traits. “We were walking to the beach to take
pictures, and it’s kind of a big step into the
sand,” remembers Kelsey. Danny instinctively
put out his arm to help his new wife. They
walked the last step together. Says Kelsey,
“We were looking at each other and laughing.
I was just so giddy.”
Kat
First, they spent time together planning a
field day. Then they took the middle-school
kids to laser tag. There were adult-only
happy hours, but with other co-workers.
& Nick
“The kids knew we were in love with each
other before we knew,” cracks Kat. To Nick
and Kat, they were just colleagues spend-
ing time together at group outings. “But
we would always be the last two there,”
JULY 22, 2017
confesses Nick. Their first official date
was appropriately a baseball game: Yan-
kees (her team) vs. Orioles (his) at Camden
Yards. Much to her chagrin, the Orioles
won. “But I was the real winner,” she smiles.
After a springtime proposal in Fells
Point, the two started wedding prep.
Despite growing up with a father in the
business—he owned a very busy tuxedo
shop—Kat was feeling a bit overwhelmed.
Expanding their venue search criteria, the
two found Wyndridge Farm in York County,
about an hour from Baltimore. It promised
farm-crafted beers and cider and a spot big
enough for their large families, friends, and
fellow teachers. Because the nuptials were
in Pennsylvania, Nick’s mom called it their
destination wedding. “It was a nice break
from the city,” says Kat.
Their wedding day was hot and rainy and
bursting at the seams with their quirky per-
sonality, including a Sandlot-themed cake.
They waited until the 11th hour to decide
on their ceremony location. “My dad, he
wanted it for me so badly,” says Kat of get-
ting married outside at the wooden chapel
nestled in the misty, green hills. Her col-
lege roommates, groomsmen, and her dad—
in his perfectly tailored custom tuxedo—
carried and set up all 220 chairs minutes
before the ceremony began.
Kat and Nick had their first look in a
meadow wet with rain. Says Kat, “I was
kind of running in the field. My dress got
muddy, and it wasn’t perfect, but it was per-
fect for me. I’m not put together. I’m wear-
ing this beautiful gown, but I’m still me.”
Erin
mix, for pictures.
“Right after we got married, we went in
to see the reception space—just the two of
us—and that was awesome just in itself,”
& Luis
says Erin, who planned every detail of
their meticulous wedding. “We went to the
dance floor with our logo projected and we
were practicing our dance. It was the first
APRIL 15, 2017 couple minutes of us being husband and
wife. It just felt so natural and good.”
Katie
offered a unique venue: vast space for an
outdoor ceremony and lawn games, a tent-
ed reception, and a location in Charm City.
& Stephen
The reception décor—monograms, ginger
jars, magnolia leaves, and toile—had filled
Katie’s childhood home and paid homage
to her mother, who had passed away seven
years earlier. Stephen’s dad, Phil Canterbury,
OCTOBER 15, 2016 played an integral role, too. Months into
their planning, Katie had found an old man-
tle at The Loading Dock and he took on the
job of refurbishing it. On their wedding day,
it framed their sweetheart table, filled with
flowers in those ginger jars, of course.
Jason

APRIL 29, 2017
IT WAS MORE THAN eight years ago that ing that legalized gay marriage. Jason and
Jason Constantino & Brandon Smith first Brandon’s moms had decided they wanted

went on their second date, which went into to Bruno Mars’ “Lazy Song” with Jason and
the wee hours. It was love. As they started Brandon’s mother. The dance culminated

was to throw a huge party for their friends to “Supermodel” by RuPaul. Not to be out-

FLORAL DYE
Wax & Wane Fiber is a natural dye collec-
tive that creates art with dye extracted from
elements found in nature. “All plants have
an end, and this gives them a new life,” says
Claire Fredrick, who co-founded the busi-
ness alongside partner Ashton Page. The
two met just after graduate school through
an introduction from a mutual acquain-
tance at Maryland Institute College of Art
(MICA), which then led to a lot of time
spent experimenting and playing around
with natural elements. This process caused
their curiosity to soar and influenced them
to start their collective about two and a half
years ago. Page and Fredrick were quick to
realize that flowers and leaves are finicky
and there are many unexpected colors that
come along with the extraction process. Of
course, this is part of what makes their job
so exceptional. For a bride or groom, dye
extracted from their wedding flowers is the
perfect way to commemorate the flowers’
spirit. The extraction can be used to dye a
scarf, shawl, wedding dress—the possibili-
ties are endless. Page and Fredrick’s beauti-
ful process begins with untampered fabric
(chiffon works best) soaked overnight in
vinegar and water. From there, the fab-
ric is laid out and the flowers and leaves
are randomly placed on it. When working
with flowers, the best results come from
the freshest blooms. They suggest extrac-
DONATION
As an event planner in Baltimore, Jennifer
Grove, the founder of Repeat Roses, was
regularly exposed to the mass disposal of
wedding flowers. Although crushing to see,
it birthed an idea. Grove was inspired to
start her own company that would put an

end to trashing the blooms. “Flower dona-
tion brings joy no matter where we spread
the love,” says Grove. “It not only brightens

is over, Repeat Roses picks up the arrange-
ments, restyles the flowers into smaller
groupings, and makes sure all vases and
other rental decor are properly returned.
From there, the flowers are transported to
various donation locations. “In Baltimore,
we work regularly with The Ronald Mc-
Donald House Charities, House of Ruth,
and Gilchrist Hospice,” says Grove. Once
the flowers have wilted, they are retrieved
and moved to a compost location. After just
three years of business, Repeat Roses has
serviced several weddings in the Baltimore
area and hopes to grow more. Services start
at $1,000 and are custom tailored to the
volume of floral arrangements at each event.

the essence of the flowers in a way that is
both beautiful and unconventional. “When
creating this product, I put my mind in the
space of, ‘What does this bouquet really
smell like? What does it feel like, and how
can I use these flowers and infuse them
to really capture some of their scent and
vibe?’” she says. With a smell of the flowers
and a description from the bride, Narasim-
han works with the ingredients that best
match the bouquet’s scent, along with some
of the actual flowers and leaves. “It’s about
trying to paint a picture using essential oils
to try and evoke that bouquet,” she says. The
oils include dried petals from the bouquet,
which give it a beautiful color and natural
appearance. Narasimhan explains, “The
flowers in your wedding are some of the

TATTOOS
After her beautiful January 2017 wedding
at the 2640 Space, with its woodsy, wild-
flower vibe, bride Hannah Walker was
searching for ways to preserve her bouquet
when she came across a stunning floral tat-

gan considering the tattoo, I loved the idea
that I would be carrying my bouquet with
me forever,” says Walker. “It gave me an ex-
cuse to talk about my wedding all day, and
let’s face it, who doesn’t want to talk about
their wedding all the time?” It was some-
thing she hadn’t seen any other bride do be-

WHEN JOSH AND I got engaged, we scoped out a few venues around Baltimore but were left
feeling like none of them were truly us. One night, we talked about what we wanted our
wedding to look like, and we came up with a concise list: We wanted to be outside, eat deli-
cious BBQ, drink local beers, and celebrate with friends and family.
Patterson Park became the obvious choice, as it had always provided us with a backdrop
for so many activities and special occasions. It seemed only fitting that this place, in the
heart of our city and so close to our hearts, should be our wedding and reception venue.
One of the best features of having your wedding in Patterson Park is that it’s a public out-
door space, so we didn’t have to work with a preferred vendors list. We weren’t confined to
the set timeframe of a more traditional venue, so guests could walk the grounds of the park,
play lawn games, and socialize without feeling rushed.
Feeling freed from having to work with venue-specific vendors, I decided to do some
research and attempt to grow, dry, and arrange all of the flowers for the wedding. From
March to August, I grew eight different types of flowers in my Baltimore City backyard.
Luckily, a green thumb runs in the family, and my mother and grandmother both dedicated
parts of their gardens to wedding flowers, too. One of the best days I’ll ever remember was
when my mother and grandmother came to my house to arrange the flowers we grew for
every bouquet, boutonniere, and centerpiece. That day was proof that our hard work, just like every-
thing else for the Patterson Park wedding of our dreams, was going to pay off in a truly beautiful way.
