at the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas.
Most of you should have heard by now about the non-
Medicare health subsidy increase for retirees. On May 3rd, the
Board of Fire and Police Pension Commissioners approved just
a 6% increase to the non-Medicare health subsidy. The new sub-
sidy maximum is $1725.39 per month, effective July 1, 2018.
The upper limit of the Board’s authority is to increase the
non-Medicare subsidy to the lesser of 7% or the Board-approved
medical trend rate (which was also 7%). But just like last year,
after tumultuous debate, the Board only approved a 6% increase.
The tally was divided along the usual lines, with the mayor ap-
pointed commissioners voting for the 6%, and the firefighter and
police elected commissioners pushing for the actual medical
trend rate.

pring is in full swing, which means the
long days of summer are not far off. I
can’t think of a better way to usher in the
change of seasons than with a little camarade-
rie, topped with a dash of team rivalry. That’s
right, it’s time for the Lane Kemper Classic. On
May 2, 2018, thirty-two teams made up of some
of the best the LAFD has to offer gathered to
play a little softball, raise a little money for the
Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund,
and of course, honor the memory of Captain
Lane Kemper who passed away in 2006.
Captain Lane Kemper was a compas-
sionate man who believed in the spirit of ca-
maraderie. With a strong work ethic and a true
belief in you get what you give, Lane lived a
life in which he walked the talk and did so in a
confidant, but respectful way that we should all
try to emulate. Nowhere was this more evident
than with his work with the Relief Association.
Always willing to help, Lane raised countless
funds to assure the Association would be in a
position to help those in need when called upon.
Not only did he raise funds for the WODFF, but
he also raised awareness of the importance of
volunteerism, which to this day is the lifeblood
of the organization. Though it has been some

ust when I thought it was safe to take my
laptop, smart phone, tablet and iPod to
Starbucks for a nice steamin’ hot peach
infused Latte Frappachino and hook up with
other Alpha Males, I found out that the Edu-
cation and Research on Toxics Organization
has determined that the chemical, Acrylamide,
has made its way into all our cups of coffee.
If you haven’t heard about this chemical, it
causes cancer in rodents, so naturally it’ll kill
us humans. But don’t despair, I think if we wait
another week these same researchers will re-
verse their decision and proclaim that it’s safe
to enjoy a nice hot steamin’ cup, especially
while zombied out on your favorite electronic
gizmos.
I also found out that there are new ex-
pressions bein’ used by the younger generation.
Actually, there’s probably a bunch of them but
since I haven’t strayed far from my burrow,
well, it’s new to me. The expression, “my bad,”
is now used to let other people know that a mis-
take was made.
I first heard this expression when a
package that was to be delivered to my house
got lost. I called the shippin’ company and they
put a trace on the package. The next day the de-
livery truck showed up with my package. The
driver explained he had dropped it off at the
wrong address and then said, “Sorry, my bad.”
What? You know, it’s bad enough that most
people address each other as, “Hey Dude,”
which is another expression I haven’t figured
out, but at least it’s better than bein’ referred to
as “Boss.”
But here’s the topper of them all. I
could tell you the name associated with guys
who follow this fashion trend but I’m almost
positive that Gloria Allred would stop by to see

me again. Guys these days are doin’ what is
known as “Manscapin’.” Actually, women are
doin’ it as well, but I think it’s referred to as
“Landscapin’,” but don’t hold me to it. Yea, I
had no idea either but my wife, who’s on top of
the latest fashion trends told me that these guys
are shavin’ themselves, everywhere.
Wait a minute. Back in the mid 1970’s
us guys were doin’ that in the fire station. We
used a slightly different approach but the end
results were pretty much the same as today. Of
course, these weren’t scheduled “Manscapes,”
so you never knew if you would be goin’ home
clean shaven or not.
Of course, the Department Administra-
tion didn’t approve of such behavior and those
caught holdin’ a razor was pretty much tried,
convicted and sent to a maximum security pris-
on.
But that’s the great thing about fashion
trends. What was once considered a crime is
now somethin’ that might earn someone a Med-
al of Valor.

Fire Station 9 is situated right in the
mist of the Skid Row District. Flanked by en-
campments of homeless people in all direc-
tions, the station is one of the busiest in the
city and the nation. It is not uncommon for the
station’s units to respond on 80 calls a day. For
Captain Gregory Harvey and newly appointed
Captain Cory McDaniel, having been assigned
to 9’s in 2016, responding to fire and countless
medical emergencies was all in a day’s work.
Now one would think living together 24
hours at a time at work would be enough. Yet,
outside “the office” as they called it, Harvey
and McDaniel are both family men living odd-
ly parallel lives. With residents approximately
100 yards away from one another, they are both
married with three young daughters—all un-
der the age of 10—who go to school together,
play together, and await their father’s return
together. And for these corresponding reasons,
namely the girls, the two men were inspired to
launch a battalion-wide school supply drive.
So, in the summer of 2016, after discussing
their own daughter’s return to school, the two
men began to wonder - How do the children of
skid row prepare for school? Without parents
with means to support them, how do they ready
themselves for the school year to come?
With these questions in mind, Harvey
and McDaniel set out to start a school sup-

ply drive. The drive would benefit the Union
Rescue Mission—the only mission in Skid
Row that houses children and their families.
With this goal in mind, they began to raise the
idea throughout the ranks of their battalion.
Collection boxes were placed at each station,
with LAFD members contributing the supplies
themselves. In the first year, the two deemed
the drive a success, raising nearly $1000 in
supplies. Wanting to do more in the future,
Harvey and McDaniel hope to make the chari-
table drive an annual event, one that will hope-
fully spread department-wide, serving under-
privileged children throughout the city.
According to McDaniel, he and Captain
Harvey “wanted to get the kids excited about
school because that’s what will get them off
of Skid Row.” For these two men working in
a struggling neighborhood, being of service
means more than just the normal responsibili-
ties of a member of the LAFD - it means watch-
ing out for everyone.
Though the two men no longer serve
together at the same fire station, they remain
fully committed to helping the City’s most vul-
nerable children. Their willingness to go above
McDaniel ladies and beyond their day-to-day jobs has rightfully
earned them the Crystal Flame Community
Service Award.

or the first time in its history, drones were a featured at the 2018
Fire Department Instructors Conference and Expo (FDIC). Repre-
senting the LAFD, FF Derrick Ward (FS80), FFPM Dave Daniel-
son (TEMS Unit), and B/C Richard Fields (B10) were invited to provide
expertise and instruction during the Hands-On-Training evolutions for
“Unmanned Aircraft Systems Use in Emergency Response.” It was a
resounding success!
The workshop introduced students to the emerging technology
of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), while demonstrating how UAS
can be used by emergency responders. Participants experienced hands-
on demonstrations in the areas of Live Fire (Structural and Wildland),
Hazmat, Search and Rescue, and photography/videography UAS opera-
tions.
Ward and Danielson were two of the six certified FAA Part 107
UAS pilots. B/C Fields provided information on the development of
LAFD’s UAS program and answered administrative questions on how
best to negotiate the politics and process of getting an FAA Certificate of
Authorization. Fire chiefs representing fire departments from across the
nation engaged in the information session, gaining knowledge on best
practices to initiate their own programs.
FF Derrick Ward and FFPM Dave Danielson presented an intro-
duction to Thermal Imaging configured on a drone. During two days of
instruction, they taught students the efficient use of drone technology
and how best to configure thermal imaging for wide area search, wild
land fire hot spot recognition, and structure fire aerial situation aware-
ness.
“It was an incredible experience and an honor to be invited to
represent LAFD at FDIC,” said Danielson. “Not only did we get to show
the progress of our UAS Program, we collaborated with a team of in-
structors that came from east and west coasts.”
According to FF Ward, “The ability of drones to conduct a wide
area search in wooded terrain for low heat sources was an eye-opener!
Students saw the capability of the UAS to rapidly search, scan and ac-
curately identify low heat.”
The LAFD UAS program is possible because of the support of
Chief Terrazas, his senior staff, and the Fire Foundation. This was anoth-
er successful opportunity to show how LAFD is leading the fire service
with this very versatile and valuable technology.

o you suffer from low back
pain? Spend more time sit-
ting than walking? Skipped
going to the gym a few times this
week, and when you finally do go, are you
thinking that doing squats will build your
butt? Think again! You probably suffer from a
common problem of having weak, under-
developed and ill-firing glutes. Let me
explain.
The body is an incredible
machine. It works by activating
or ‘firing’ muscles in a million
different sequences in order
to complete whatever physi-
cal task you give it. A phys-
ical task can be achieved
by using many different
muscles. We aren’t usually
interested in which mus-
cles we are using to com-
plete a task because we
are more focused on getting
the task done. Unless you’re
an athlete or you’ve been coached
on proper technique, you prob-
ably are guilty of delegating one
muscle groups’ job to another – a
very common example of this can
be seen when looking at the body’s
biggest muscle group, the glutes.
The trend most commonly
seen in the lower body is the
transfer in responsibility from
the glutes to the other parts
of the body like the quads,
or worse, the lower back.
We live in a highly quad-
dominant society, mean-
ing most of us rely heav-
ily on the quads and are not
‘recruiting’ the glutes. This
practice results in a muscular
imbalance of strength and ac-
tivation that can lead to physical
complication.
WHAT THE BUTT?!
There are three muscles
that make up your butt:
• Gluteus maximus
• Gluteus minimus
• Gluteus medius

Together these muscles make up what
we call the ‘glutes’ and are responsible for:
• Hip Extension (e.g., standing upright
from a seated position)
• Abduction (e.g., bringing your leg out to
the side from a standing position)
• External rotation (e.g., turning your foot
to face outward)
PUTTING IT ALL INTO ACTION
With what we now know, it is very pos-
sible to miss out on training the glutes even if
your typical leg day includes movements we
often correlate with glute work, such as squats
or leg presses. Though we squat at least ten
times a day--such as when we get out of bed
or stand up from a chair--it is actually a quad
dominant exercise, meaning the glutes can and
should be involved but are typically second-
ary in activation compared to the quads. This
means it’s time to start adding some new hip
dominant exercises to the routine. Here are
some great exercises to do for your glutes:
◊ Hip thrusts
◊ Single-leg hip thrusts
◊ Glute bridges
◊ Single-leg glute bridges
◊ RDL
◊ Single-leg RDL
◊ Back extension
◊ Sumo Deadlift
TROUBLE SHOOTING:
You may run into a few problems when
trying these new hip-dominant exercises.
Some common issues my clients have had in
the beginning of this transition are:
• Trouble feeling it in the glutes
• Trouble feeling it on one side
• Feeling it too much in a completely
different area like the hamstrings or calves
• Knee pain
These problems are usually due to an
individual’s inability to activate a particular
muscle group, as well as muscle imbalances,
tight muscles, and trigger points.
RECRUITMENT IN GENERAL
Due to lack of use for long periods of
time, it can be difficult to get a muscle to fire,
especially if the muscle in use is difficult to
see. If this is the case, it will take some time
and deliberate, consistent training before you
develop the ability to control a particular mus-
cle. This is referred to as proprioception or a
mind-muscle connection. If you’re having any
of these issues, I would suggest using an elastic
band around the knees or ankles during your
warm-up and training. This will force you to
push outward with your knees and help get the
glutes firing. There are many versions of these
elastic bands available online. Personally, I
prefer to use a Sling Shot Hip Circle made by
Mark Bell.
Some good band exercises you can use
in your warm-up are:
◊ Lateral steps
◊ Forward/backward walks
◊ Standing kickbacks
◊ Squats
◊ Kneeling kickbacks
◊ Clam shells
◊ Standing abduction
IMBALANCES
If the hamstrings are much weaker than
your glutes, you may feel a strong fatigue there
before you even have a chance to fatigue the
glutes, or vice versa. We almost always favor
one side of our body. Chronic compensation
leads to muscle imbalances, and this can lead
to further issues and even injury. The way we
address this problem is with unilateral exercis-
es--exercises where we isolate one side of the
body at a time.
TIGHT MUSCLES/TRIGGER POINTS
Tight muscles can pull on other mus-
cles, bones, and joints and may cause knee
pain. This issue can be addressed by stretching
regularly. Trigger points develop in the muscles
from overuse, causing pain and tightness. This
can be addressed from self-myofascial release
techniques known as ‘foam rolling’ or through
deep-tissue massages.
SAMPLE PROGRAM
Here is a template for you to follow
when redesigning your workouts:
General warm-up (3-5 minutes): Pedal a sta-
tionary bicycle to increase heart rate and get
blood flowing.
Dynamic warm-up (3-5 minutes): Dynami-
cally stretch the muscle groups you will be
addressing during your training: toe touches,
soldier kicks, butt kicks, gate walks, step, and
hinge.
Activation Exercises (5-10 minutes): Use
your resistance band and perform one set of
each; clam shells, lateral steps x 20, hip thrusts
x 20, squats x 20, standing abduction x 10 each
leg
Resistance training (20-45 minutes): Use
weights that challenge you but allow for proper
form:
• Single-leg RDL 3 sets of 10
• Hip Thrusts with Dumbbell 3 sets of 10
• Single leg glute bridges 3 sets of 10
each leg
• Back extension 3 sets of 10-15
• Cool Down/Stretching (5-10 minutes):
Hold each stretch for 30 seconds to a
minute, breathe deep, exhale slowly,
and repeat 2x the following stretches:
• Pigeon or modified pigeon
• Hollywood stretch
• Knee-back kneeling quad stretch
• Sit and reach
• Frog stretch

Ribs and was second overall at the 2016
Fire It Up BBQ Competition. Cruz was
even on a TV show called On the Menu,
where he was a runner-up.
Eventually Cruz gathered all those reci-
pes he had written down and put them to
print for all to enjoy. Cruz Macias, Jr.
created Fireman Favorites, a cookbook
for new and veteran firefighters, or for
anyone who loves food and wants to cook like
a real firefighter! His recipes take a busy fire-
fighter’s schedule into account, but especially
people’s passion for eating. So, get your apron
on and get ready to start cooking like a REAL
firefighter!

irefighter/Chef Cruz Macias of Fire Sta-
tion 87 is heating things up in the kitch-
en. From cooking a delicious omelet in
the morning to smoking some three-alarm pork
spare ribs for dinner, Cruz’s desire to cook the
best meal he can never ceases. Even as a young
boy, he enjoyed cooking. Cruz was constantly
spending his spare time in the kitchen, attempt-
ing to make something new out of something
left over from a previous meal. At the firehouse,
Cruz continued his experimenting, cooking
meals that he grew up eating and adapting them
for present day station life. Always wanting to
improve on his talents, he also watched what
other members cooked, paying close attention
to what the crews liked and didn’t. He learned
portion sizes and how to make a good meal
even when pressed for time while assigned to
busier assignments.
The more he cooked, the better he be-
came—and, boy, did he get practice! Cruz
was frequently asked by his fellow firefight-
ers to cook for them when it was their turn in
the cooking rotation. If they couldn’t persuade
Cruz to cook, they would instead ask him for
his recipes. Tired of constantly having to repeat
himself, Cruz began to write the recipes down
for others. He soon realized he had a fairly
large stack of all sorts of recipes. The idea of
writing his own cookbook began to materialize.
He also began entering cooking competitions,
such as the LA Times Firehouse Cook-Off. He
took a runner-up position one year, followed by
Ingredients:
6 – 12 Eggs Huevos Rancheros
6 corn tortillas
1/2 c. plus 2 tbsp. cooking oil
2 small brown onions peeled, quartered, and sliced
2 small green bell peppers quartered and sliced (no seeds
or stem)
2 jalapenos deseeded and finely chopped
1 can 14 oz. red enchilada sauce
1 can 28 oz. petite diced tomatoes in juice
1 can 8 oz. tomato sauce
4 c. water
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp granulated garlic
Pinch ground oregano
½ tsp. ground cumin
Directions:
Place 2 tbsp. oil in large pan on medium heat. Add bell peppers, cook for one minute.
Add onions and jalapenos, cook until tender. Add spices, enchilada sauce, diced tomatoes, and
tomato sauce, stir in water bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer cook for 10 minutes.
In a small frying pan, add ½ c. oil heat on high. Once warm, flash fry each tortilla for
about 20-30 seconds per side until slightly crisp. Place on lined tray and set aside. Using remain-
ing oil in the pan, cook one to two eggs per person, each cooked over easy. Place one tortilla on
a plate, place eggs on top, cover with ranchero sauce. Optional items: sprinkle with cheese or top
with sour cream. Serve with refried bean, hash browns, breakfast meat of choice, or tortillas.

ne day last September, I was at home doing absolutely noth-
ing, as most retirees do - watching the news, having another cup
of coffee, when out of the blue, my phone rang. Should I even
answer it?
“Hello,” I said, somewhat annoyed at the disturbance to my per-
fect morning.
“Hey bud, it’s Wag.”
What could Dave Wagner want I wondered? So I asked, “What’s
up?”
“I’m thinking about a 40th reunion party for our recruit classes of
1978,” he quickly replied.
“What? Are you nuts? Who do you think is going to show up for
THAT?”
“Buddy, we should do it!”
“We? We? What do you mean, WE??
Little did I know that he had already decided that I was to be
involved. Dave is the editor of the Firemen’s Grapevine magazine and I
felt that when he asks for something, this guy isn’t kidding.
“What do you want me to do, and why are you asking me?”
“Let’s meet and have lunch and I’ll tell you,” he said.
So, after a few meetings, and lunches, I relented and decided to come on
board and test the waters.
So, on April 14, 2018, nearly 100 people actually showed up at
the Pickwick Gardens in Burbank for the Classes of ’78 40th Reunion
celebration. I was blown away. He did it. He had a vision and I was
along for the ride. We were in a fairly large room, with a bar and buffet
dinner, a DJ, and a video stream of images of us guys from 1978 through
the 2000’s. Dave was also able to convince his beautiful wife, Stacy, to
decorate the tables with center pieces and balloons, with the assistance of
Mandy Mijiddorj from Mongolia. That’s right, Mongolia!! This guy has
some pull.
Juliet Brandolino from the Relief Association was also there to
sign in the guests and greet them. There was a long table filled with nos-
talgia items, including period Department bulletins, photos, and a heart-
warming tribute to members of those two classes that have passed on.
Dave had thought of everything.
The invite list included members of the January ‘78 and Septem-
ber ‘78 classes, as well as peer group Firefighters and Captains. The Jan-
uary class was the first ever to have peer-groupers. Steve Ruda (9-10-78)
was the MC and delivered a great overview of those very intense rookie
years. Robert Gladden (1-29-78) has become a very good photographer
over the years and provided his talents as the official photographer for
the evening.
Needless to say, I was stunned with what this guy was able to
pull off, allowing all of us a little time to reminisce on over 40 years of
memories, and do so, without the slightest hiccup.
Dave, I’ll never doubt you again, and I had drunk enough coffee
anyway on that September morning. Thank you so much for doing this.

W
hen Cheryl Smith Lee was in need
of help, somehow Valerie Lawrence
sensed it. A phone call by Valerie
to Cheryl confirmed it. The widow of FF/PM
Brian Lee explained to her that life had been
a bit hard as of late. Raising twin girls alone,
along with her other children, while trying to
maintain a home on her own had overburdened
her. Letters from the homeowner’s association
had been piling up, threatening legal action if
she didn’t complete some needed repairs to
her home. Cheryl didn’t know what was go-
ing to happen--that is, until Valerie and other
members of the newly formed LAFRA Family
Support Group took charge. With a few phone
calls, Valerie had LAFD member Juan Albar-
ran and his friend Dean head out to Cheryl’s
house, paint brushes and tools in hand, ready
to work. They painted the home’s shutters and
the front door and even took the time to hang
an American flag on the front porch, something
Cheryl had been wanting to do since Brian’s
death in 2014.
Cheryl is not alone in these types of sit-
uations. Many widows and widowers of LAFD
members find themselves in need of a little
help from time to time. That is why the new
family support groups was created. The LAFD
Chaplains, in cooperation with the Los Ange-
les Firemen’s Relief Association, have formed
a new alliance for surviving spouses and other
family members. The LAFRA Family Support
Group assists those who have lost a loved one,
either active or retired by helping them through
the difficult transition from spouse to widow or
widower.
Fixing plumbing issues and doing a
little painting is not the only reason the sup-
port group was formed. We all know that when
a member passes away, the remaining spouse
goes through a grieving process that can be
very painful. Surviving family members must
take on many arduous tasks, often alone and
without advanced warning. From funeral ar-
rangements, to mountains of paperwork, to
handling other home and financial matters, the
passing of a loved one is a stressful time. The
Relief Association wants all of our members to
know that they are here for them. Trained grief
counselors like Valerie Lawrence (widow of
Captain John Lawrence) and Diane Vigel (wife
of Relief Association Trustee Joe Vigel, who
has worked with the autism community for
years), as well as the department’s chaplains
are all here to help.
The LAFRA Family Support Group,
however, can’t do it alone. Active and retired
members are needed to volunteer their time and
“fix-it” skills to help surviving families with
general repair and construction issues relating
to plumbing, roofing, landscaping, painting,
automotive and other issues in need of gen-
eral maintenance. If you have the time and the
skills, please contact the group at (323) 259-

More than anything, the Relief Associa-
tion wants you to know that you are not alone.
Each person’s loss is different and will grieve
for different periods of time. If you are looking
for support resources, a compassionate heart, a
listening ear, or a sense of hope, do not hesitate

rington, who passed away in March. I first
met Jack in early February of 1973 when
I was promoted to Auto Fireman, assigned
to Old Fire Station 17. Their regular truck
was a 1962 Seagrave, but it was in the
shops, and the relief apparatus was the
1943 Kenworth tractor with a 1938 Sea-
grave 100 ft. aerial. In doing the Monday
checks, I was unable to determine if it had
a full tank of fuel, as there was no gauge
on the dash, and no apparent fuel fill. I fi-
nally asked Jack (who was a probationary
Engineer at the time) if he could help me
locate the fuel tank. After what seemed at
the time like forever, we located the fuel
tank under the Captain’s seat, along with
a short piece of lathe tied to some salvage
cord for a dipstick! Paso Robles is where
I saw Jack for the last time, although I

did talk to him after his move to Bullhead
City, on the Colorado River. Another one
of the “Good Guys” gone too soon.

continued to help his wife, Laura, until

not be institutionalized. ALS is a terrible

n behalf of Fire Station 26, we want to thank the past and
present members who attended the 15th Annual “Anytime,
Anyplace” Doubles Handball Tournament held on Tuesday,
February 20, 2018.
The tourney once again demonstrated that camaraderie in sports
is alive and well here in the LAFD. We had a huge turnout that ranged
from retirees who came laced up and were ready to roll it out, to the
newbies who were just beginning to learn the game. We especially want
to thank honoree, Danny Leon (retired A/O) and family who came to
spend one last day here enjoying laughs and countless stories that a
20-year tenure at the “two-six” is sure to provide. Lucky for the field, our
past multi-champion, Jesse Pasos is recuperating from a recent injury
and could not play, though he was in attendance, enjoying the festivities
just the same (Well, almost as much).
As the day went on, the dust began to settle and the crowd
thinned as a select few who were in contention late into the day (they
will remain nameless) decided that beating traffic on a weekday carried
as much prestige as sticking around and winning a handball tourna-
ment. Just the same, we did crown our 2018 Champions: Marc Rossello
(FF, 26-A) and Enrique Barboa (Capt, 100-C).
Congratulations to our champions and best wishes to all who
attended . . . see you next year!

restaurant on time and in good
spirits. During their scenic
ride over the Ortega Moun-
tains, the group picked up an
additional two riders as they
T AT passed Lake Elsinore.
eum The first stop was for a quick fuel and
pit off of Highway 15 in Temecula. With the
Blvd. pit stop complete, the large gathering of bikes
was back on Highway 79 and headed towards
0028 the old mountain mining town of Julian. It must
have been an impressive sight as the two col-
umns of Harleys stretched out over a quarter
mile as they crossed the Puma Valley. At 1300
ME hrs the group rolled into town to eat and drink
with friends at the Julian Grille. There they met
8 AM up with more firefighters and friends from the
San Diego Wind and Fire riders. More than 45
9 AM riders eventually joined the Fire Hogs in their
1 PM annual pilgrimage to this historical destination.
Around 3 pm, the riders started splitting
LOW) up to head back down the mountain. One group
went to a Temecula Old Town watering hole
for more camaraderie as another group rode on
to Hell’s Kitchen and Swallows before head-
ing home. Five other couples spent the night
laughing and telling stories at a local motel in
Julian.
Special thanks to Joe Fig, Russel Bell,
Bennie, Taylor, and their fine ladies for the
beverages and appetizers. Good weather, a safe
ride, and a good time was had by all. Look for a
repeat of the same next year, so be on the watch
for the date and bring your friends. All riders
are welcome...

Tax Changes – Are You Impacted?

On Feb. 21, 2018, the IRS released IR-2018-31, Interest
on Home Equity Loans Often Still Deductible Under
New Law, explaining that in many cases, taxpayers will
be able to continue to deduct interest paid on home
equity loans, home equity lines of credit (HELOC)
or second mortgages under Sec. 163.
Recently enacted federal tax reform suspended the
deduction for interest paid on home equity loans and
lines of credit unless used to buy, build or substantially
improve the taxpayer’s home that secures the loan.
Interest on a home equity loan used to pay personal
living expenses, such as credit card debts would not be
deductible. The suspension is effective for tax years 2018
through 2025.
Additionally, the prior law capped the total “acquisition
indebtedness,” essentially the amount secured by the
residence, to a total of $1 million. For the period of the
suspension, the total cap has been reduced to $750,000
for indebtedness incurred on or after Dec. 15, 2017.
The cap applies to the combined amount of loans used
to buy, build or substantially improve the taxpayer’s
main home and second home.
The guidance provides three examples to help illustrate
the new rules. Two of the examples are especially
noteworthy and are reproduced in their entirety below:
Example 1: In January 2018, a taxpayer takes out a
$500,000 mortgage to purchase a main home with a
fair market value of $800,000. In February 2018, the
taxpayer takes out a $250,000 home equity loan to put
an addition on the main home. Both loans are secured
by the main home and the total does not exceed the cost
of the home. Because the total amount of both loans
does not exceed $750,000, all of the interest paid on
the loans is deductible. However, if the taxpayer used
the home equity loan proceeds for personal expenses,
such as paying off student loans and credit cards, then
the interest on the home equity loan would not be
deductible.

Example 1 emphasizes that in order for the interest to
be deductible, the proceeds from the loans must be used
to buy, build or substantially improve the home.
Example 2: In January 2018, a taxpayer takes out a
$500,000 mortgage to purchase a main home. The
loan is secured by the main home. In February 2018,
the taxpayer takes out a $250,000 loan to purchase a
vacation home. The loan is secured by the vacation
home. Because the total amount of both mortgages
does not exceed $750,000, all of the interest paid on
both mortgages is deductible. However, if the taxpayer
took out a $250,000 home equity loan on the main home
to purchase the vacation home, then the interest on the
home equity loan would not be deductible.
Similar to Example 1, not only must the loans be used
to buy, build or substantially improve the home, the
home that secured the loan must be the home where
the work occurs.
TAKEAWAYS
The IRS also reminds taxpayers that, as was the case
under the prior law, there are a number of eligibility
requirements to deduct the interest including that the
loan must be secured by a taxpayer’s main or second
home and not exceed the cost of the home.
Certain taxpayers under contract by Dec. 15, 2017, who
close on the purchase of a principal residence before Jan.
1, 2018 and who purchase such residence by April, 1,
2018, may still qualify for the higher $1 million cap.

Old Fireboat No. 2 deserves a perma-
nent home on the waterfront so that visitors
can see it in an appropriate structure and enjoy
learning about its history in the Port of Los An-
geles for many years to come. To accomplish
our goal we will need the support of all of our

Extinguisher Fund?
The brain child of Ted Bailie, retired from the LAFD and LAFRA, your station’s
Extinguisher Fund is a simple way to collect donations for the Widows, Orphans
and Disabled Firemen’s Fund. Ted saw the accumulation of change that the cook
dumped into the mess fund box each shift and had a better idea. If this change
was instead collected for the WODFF he figured it could really add up. With an
average of 50 cents per day per station, in a year there would be . . . well, you can
do the math!
So take your turn in the cooking rotation and remember to drop all your
change into your station’s extinguisher. There should be one in every firehouse.
And any loose change in your pockets, any that you find in the TV chairs, or
hoarded in the “ashtray” of your vehicle can be thrown in for good measure.
The Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund is the heart of the Relief
Association. This fund provides assistance to our firefighters and families who are
faced with personal difficulties and tragedies. Donations are the sole means of
support for this Fund.
Firefighters risk their lives to protect the community on a daily basis. Thus,
they and their families can be comforted in knowing that the “Fire Department
Family,” supported by the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund, is there
for them in times of need.
