I modeled my piece, Dreaming, after Cowell’s “Ing” pieces. For this piece I used the
Prime form of 027 and whose Forte number is 3-9. The first time the set appears I presented it as
an open trichord with the notes being A, E, and B. this open chord was used to create a more
ambiance effect. for the next couple of measures this trichord reappears in its same inversion but
is played in the opposite directions, B, E, A, and slowly goes down in a chromatic fashion. This
is to create an effect of falling. On measures six and seven the trichord appears with only the
perfect fifth but eventually shows the interval of 2 half steps at the end of measure seven before
outlining the original trichord. For the majority of the piece the trichord appears in the same
inversion but is transposed in different step, such 5 and 1 in either direction, to show effects of
leaps and startles of someone’s sleep. The trichord appears in measure 16 as an inversion with as
B, E, and A, (11,4,9). Like Cowell’s piece I used different motives to create a form of impression
and atmosphere to give the simulation of what dreams are perceived. I used very open arpeggios
and fast moving arpeggios to give a sense of the unperceived and chords and rhythmic motives to
symbolize the agitation of nightmares in dreams. At the end I included a repetition to the
beginning so show that at the end it is still a dream we wake from.
