Globalization and Technology in Education 2

The Impact of Globalization and Technology in Education

Education has been a complex and arduous labor to understand, apply and even

teach. Ever since mankind exists, education has been part of our lives. Through History we

can easily identify that people learned by observing the world around and doing what they

saw others did first. There were not leaders who guided this learning process. But as time

passed, modernity absorbed this former method and knowledge began to ramify. Teaching

methods emerged, pedagogical processes were born, and education became an issue of

study. Now, observing and doing were only a small branch of the big and tall tree called:

Education. Therefore, many other aspects needed to be considered for an effectiveness in

the goal this tree was intending to aim.

There are several trends that has impacted education along with time. But

Technology and globalization, have influenced education in a tremendous way that this has

suffered a transformation.

Many people would remember being taught by writing as much as possible from the

board or book into a notebook and memorizing it. This meant that understanding or

applying the information received was not essential. Every teacher based the class on

memory as the principal form to assess students’ learning. Added to this, only teachers

were allowed to intervene and contribute to enrich the information delivered in the

classroom; conversely, students were not to contribute on filling the classroom with

information different from the teacher’s.

Conventional education varied from culture to culture. E.g. Chinese educational

setting was not the same as the American educational setting. And this was because of the

huge cultural gap. Hence, it is imperative to take into account culture to understand,

analyze and describe the changes presented in any educational setting.

Having mentioned these scenarios where education was affected by the culture in

which it was set; Technology and Globalization emerge and hit the very foundations of

education, obliging educational leaders to turn teaching methods toward these trends.

Teachers, professors, instructors, tutors and all the other names given to educational leaders

must meet the competences required to be an effective educator. An educational leader

must navigate changes through the following recommendations: First, starting with learning

what the change is about. Then, understanding why the change is required, and finally

apply it.

Shawn McCusker is a history teacher and formal analytical essays have been the

hallmark of his assessments. He realized of one particular change in his classroom.

All of his students owned IPads. So, Shawn decided to give his students some

control over how they might demonstrate their learning. Students could write an

essay if they wished—or they could create a performance of understanding. One girl

created a video about Adam Smith and Karl Marx. The engrossing 12-minute clip

features hand-drawn animation, sketch notes, music, and student narration. This 15-

year-old girl spent untold hours researching industrial philosophers and drafting her

narrative and she can quote passages from Marx and Smith verbatim. (Daccord &

Reich, 2015).

It is clearly demonstrated that the change made by Mr. McCusker had the intended

impact. He, understood technology was invading his classroom. Therefore, he used it as a

tool for his classes and obtained the desired results.

Kristen Paino is an elementary school teacher. She helped create a community

called Global Book Series, which features collaborative books authored by

educators and students from around the world. One of Kristen's goals was to help

elementary students become interested in—and learn—geography. She decided to

solicit geography presentations from classrooms across the world, reaching out to

teachers through social media, particularly twitter. They asked teachers—and by

extension their students—to create two-page presentations about their communities.

(Daccord & Reich, 2015).

Recently, cross-cultural educational settings are common. Human beings live in a

global village; sharing and interacting from one point of the earth to another within

seconds. This is another example of the impact of globalization in education.

The role of an educational leader is in constant change and will continue to be. But

this is not the problem; the main issue comes when stating the interrogation on how

educational leaders are going to respond to it. Technology and globalization are two major

trends that will continue molding teaching styles. But these are not the only ones and as

educational leaders, we must be willing to embrace and take advantage of the upcoming

changes.
