The Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation

whose charitable purpose is to bring about the Singularity - the technological
creation of greater-than-human intelligence. We believe that the creation of
greater-than-human intelligence would result in an immediate, worldwide, and
material improvement to the human condition. For more about our charitable
purpose, see An Introduction to the Singularity.

The creation of computer-based or "artificial" intelligence is one of the primary

pathways to the Singularity. Our objective is to support the conceptualization,
design, and implementation of Artificial Intelligence, especially Artificial
Intelligence capable of self-modification, self-understanding, or self-enhancement;
Artificial Intelligence capable of humanlike general cognition; Artificial
Intelligence which is qualitatively novel, rather than an extension of existing
designs; and Artificial Intelligence which acts for the benefit for humanity
("Friendly AI").

The Singularity Institute presently supports continuing work on Coding a

Transhuman AI, the seminal document for seed AI. Our long-term strategy calls
for the Singularity Institute to directly implement the Singularity by designing,
developing, and teaching the seed AI which becomes the first transhuman Artificial
Intelligence.
