NON-FICTION RESPONSE ANALYSIS

1. The main idea of this article was putting an end to the death penalty. A majority of
California voter, voted for the death penalty to stay but people have spoken and are
fighting to make it disappear. Potential violations of the constitutional right caused the
court system to question many things about the death penalty. It might save the state from
complete chaos.
2. Connections that I made about this article and other that I have read is that they all talk
about innocent people who have been wrongly convicted.
3. The authors purpose is to inform people about all of the issues that have to do with the
death penalty and how people are finally speaking up about the situation.
4. The audience are educated individuals with a high vocabulary that are interested in
change of the death penalty.
5. The most relevant details that the author used was the evidence describing how the deth
penalty must be put to an end.
- Targeting poor and people of color
- Wrongful convictions
- Exorbitant cost
6. Logos is the most prevalent in the writing because it is using solid evidence. Facts are
included. On paragraph 4, it uses logos and the author says, “[...] clear evidence of
wrongful convictions [...]” (Author). Also, the author includes, “Polls show that support
for the death penalty [...] is facing” (Author). Lastly, the author argues that, “The
Supreme Court has already struck down the death penalty once before [...]” (Author).
7. A theme for this article could be: you can change the ways things go if you bring people
together and try to make a difference, even if they have been a certain way for so long.
a. In the first paragraph of this article, the author says, “they are OK with the government
executing people[...] as the old saying goes, people have spoken” (Author). IN another
paragraph it shows that on the election people in CA completely did not have a problem
with executed criminals, but people are still fighting for what they believe is right.
8. This text made me understand the topic by the evidence and facts provided in the article
that supported their beliefs.
9. An element I would change is for the text to have less opinion and more facts. It could
have made the article more convincing and credible.
10. OPTION 2: NEWS ARTICLE
The death penalty should be abolished because of all of the mistakes and actions that
came along with it. The death penalty process does not always go as planned and is actually able
to cause more damage/pain to the person than planned. Most of the time, something alway goes
wrong in the process of the Lethal Injection method. There has been an extremely great amount
of people that were innocent put to death. In this article, the author states, “despite clear evidence
of wrongful convictions disappropriate targeting[...]” (Author). People are always being put on
death row when there is unclear evidence and it is wrong. They are taking away an innocent
human beings life away all due to an error the system made. The death penalty should be
abolished because there is always too make complications and mistakes being made.
