QUESTION PAPER SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

Please read each of the following instructions carefully before attempting questions :

Answer must be written in ENGLISH only.

There are EIGHT questions divided in TWO sections.

Condidate has to attempt FIVE questions in all.

Questions no. 1 and 5 are compulsory and out of the remaining THREE are to be attempted choosing at
least ONE question from each section.

The number of marks carried by a question / part is indicated against it.

Answers must be written in the medium authorized in the Admission Certificate which must be stated
clearly on the cover of this Question-cum-Answer (QCA) Booklet in the space provided. No marks will be
given for answers written in a medium other than the authorized one.

Wherever any assumptions are made for answering a question, they must be clearly indicated. Diagrams
/ figures, wherever required, shall be drawn in the space provided for answering the question itself.

Unless otherwise mentioned, symbols and notations carry their usual standard meanings. Attempt of questions
shall be counted in sequential order. Unless struck off, attempt of a question shall be counted even if
attempted partly. Any page or portion of the page left blank in the Question-cum-Answer Booklet must be

1. (c) Write a program to find the smallest element in a block of 8-bit unsigned binary data,
whose number is stored in memory location A001H, and the data are stored in memory

1. (e) Derive the transfer function of the system shown in figure below, K being the amplifier

2. (a) What is the need for parallel operation of transformers? What are the conditions for
satisfactory and successful parallel operation of transformers: [20 Marks]
2. (b) A 7.5 kW, 440 V, 3 phase star connected, 50, Hz, 4-pole squirrel cage induction motor
develops full load torque at a slip of 5% when operated at rated voltage and frequency.
Rotational losses (core, windage and friction) are to be neglected. Motor Impedance
data is as follows:

Determine the maximum motor torque at rated voltage and the slip at which it will
occur. Also calculate the starting torque. [20 Marks]
2. (c) Develop the Block Diagram of an armature controlled DC servo motor and derive it’s
transfer function relating angular shift in the shaft and the input armature voltage.

3. (a) A tap changer transformer of nominal ratio 11/33 kV supplies a load of 5000 kVA with
a lagging 11/33 kV supplies a load of 5000 kVA with a lagging pf of 0.8. The voltage
at the load end of the line is 30 kV, while R  3 and X  2 for each conductor.
The  connnected primary of the transformer has R  0.17  and X  2.0 per phase,
while the star connected secondary has R  0.5 and X  6 per phase. Calculate the
voltage at the secondary terminals and the setting of the tap changer. [20 Marks]

3. (b) A resistor has a nominal value of 10   0.1%. A voltage is applied across the resistor
and the power consumed in the resistor is calculated in two ways :

The system is to have a damping ratio 0.7. Determine the value of k to satisfy this
condition and calculate the settling time, peak time and maximum overshoot for the
value of k thus determined. [20 Marks]
4. (a) A second order control system incorporating proportional plus derivative control is
shown in figure below :

4. (c) The card attahed to a galvanometer gives the following data.
Sensitivity = 0.004 A / mm, coil resistance = 50 , CDRX = 300  (critical damping
resistance external).
It is used in bridge measurements with an Ayrton shunt of 500  resistance.
(a) Is the galvanometer overdamped (or) underdamped under this condition of use ?
(b) What is the sensitivity of Galvanometer with shunt at maximum setting.
(c) Where should the shunt be tapped to give a sensitivity 0.01 as great as in part (b) ?

5. (c) The power flowing in a 3-phase 3 wire balanced load system is measured by two
wattmeter method. The reading of wattmeter A is 7500 W and of wattmeter B is –
1500 W.
(a) What is the power factor of the system ?
(b) If the voltage of the circuit is 400 V, what is the value of capacitance which must
be introduced in each phase to cause the whole of the power measured to appear
on wattmeter A. The frequency is 50 Hz. [12 Marks]
5. (d) Given the system shown below, find J and D to yield 10% overshoot and a settling time
of 2 seconds for a step input of torque T(t) :

6. (a) A 50 Hz, synchronous salient pole generator is driven by a hydroelectric turbine at a


speed of 125 rpm. There are 576 stator slots with two conductors per slot. The air gap
diameter is 6.1 m and the stator length is 1.2 m. The sinusoidally distributed flux
density has a peak value of 1.1 T.
(a) calculate the maximum rms single-phase voltage that can be produced by suitably
connecting all the conductors.
(b) Find the per phase emf if the conductors are connected in a balanced 3-phase
winding. [20 Marks]
6. (b) Determine the number of roots having positive real part of the characteristic equation
whose block diagram is as shown in figure below :

6. (c) The law of deflection of a moving iron ammeter is given by I  4 n ampere, where 
is the deflection in radian and n is a constant. the self inductance when the meter
current is zero is 10 mH. The spring constant is 0.16 N-m/rad.

(i) Determine an expression for self inductance of the meter as a function of  and
n.
(ii) With n = 0.75 calculate the meter current and the deflection that corresponds to
a self inductance of 60 mH. [20 Marks]
