Mallard News
Gert & Daisy.... .... How are yew all gitting on tergether?
Well, summer hev arrived – at least fer a few days. The Church Fete wus luvly. Sid and
Daisy won a lot of prizes on the tombola but dint git a raffle prize. The wedding photos
in the church were noice and brought back a lot of memories. It wus luvly ter see the
wedding dresses on display - everyone must hev bin very skinny when they got married!
Talking of weddings!!.......... Did yew see the Royal Wedding? Dint she look luvly? It
wus a beautiful, different, joyful wedding. Such a diverse array of guests all enjoying the
day. George Clooney, in particular, looked scrummy. Hope they’ll be very happy.
A sad piece of news. Ephraim Green passed away suddenly on Saturday morning. He
was a real village character having been a gamekeeper for many years. Our hearts go out
to his ten children and their families especially as they lost their mum only ten months
ago.
On a happier note we found owt what broke Mr Hardingham’s window. Apparently, an
aeroplane has hit a telegraph pole on Weasenham Road and there must hev bin a bit of
debris fly off.
We wud loike ter congratulate Peggy and Malcolm on the safe arrival of their first great-
grandchild – a little girl. Daisy is looking forward ter 29 th May when her 10th grandchild
will be born. A sibling for Lillie – very exciting.
We wud loike ter thank the school fer the two hanging baskets they gave us fer doing the
quiz. Very noice. Twas a great noight and we enjoyed it as well.
Yew may hev noticed there are two little additions ter the bowls club garden. If yew
look across from the car park or hall yew will see a little lady standing behind a little
man, as it should be because as we all know behind every man there is a good woman!
Gert and Daisy will soon be off on their annual holiday without Sid and Bert. We will be
back by the time yew git the next Mallard but the holiday report ownt be in til August.
We should hev lots to report as Chrissie and her mates will be at the same place at the
same toime. Dew yew keep atroshing. Don’t git sunburnt! Gert and Daisy

‘Histry Bits’.... Screen Savers?
The church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Eye is
truly magnificent. One of East Anglia’s famous Interior of
‘wool’ churches, its intricately patterned tower Eye Church
soars more than a hundred feet above this small
Suffolk town. Its interior is equally spectacular,
though most of it was ‘restored’ by the Victori-
ans in the mid-nineteenth century. Its true glory
lies in its magnificent rood screen, dating from
the late 1470s. In medieval churches the rood
screen divided the chancel, where the altar is
situated, from the nave, the main body of the
church. Most screens were torn down and de-
stroyed during the Reformation. But, not all.
Those that survived are usually made from
intricately carved and painted wood and feature
portraits of the twelve apostles, or other saints.
The screen at Eye is no exception.
But what, you might ask, does any of this have
to do with Massingham? The answer is simple.
Village legend has it that the screen at Eye
church originally belonged to us and that, way
back in the mists of time, it was stolen, removed, or otherwise expropriated. Like the
Elgin Marbles in the British Museum, maybe it should be given back!
Su’en and I recently took a day out to visit
Eye to see if we could find out any more
about this fascinating story. We were met by
a very kind and welcoming parishioner who,
besides letting us use the church loo (we were
desperate), produced a faded manuscript copy
of a book called, not very originally, ‘The
History of Eye’ by Clive Paine. And there, on
page two, was what we were looking for. The
screen, according to Mr. Paine’s researches,
had genuinely come from Massingham. Not
from dear old St. Mary’s, as we had sup-
posed, but from Massingham Priory Church
which faced it across the green. The priory
was closed down in 1475 and the remaining
handful of monks and lay brothers transferred
to the priory at West Acre. Left behind was a
set of empty buildings and a redundant rood
screen. Though we don’t know for certain, it
is more than likely that the entire lot was put
up for sale soon afterwards, its stone being re-
used for building purposes and its beautiful
screen shipped down to Eye, where it remains
to this day.
Anyone for a rescue bid? David Miller

Message from Reverend Jane to all Parishioners
Sun, Sand and Sore Feet!
Some of you may know that I am going to be away from the parishes for three whole
months this summer, on Sabbatical. However, I will be back at the end of August!
A Sabbatical is granted after a number of years in ministry and is given as a time for
‘reflection and refreshment’ - in particular ‘spiritual refreshment.’
So what will I be doing with this precious time? Lots of sun and sand I hope – with not
too many blisters on my poor feet - I hope and pray! I will be undertaking several
‘pilgrimages’ involving long distance walking across some of the UK’s most stunning
countryside and coastlands. Hiking and hill walking is a popular hobby for many people
and has long been a favourite pastime of mine – so – on with the boots and off I go!
You may wonder, what is the difference between a long distance walk and a pilgrimage?
After all, when you look at the pilgrim road on the one hand and at a hiking track on the
other, they’re essentially the same. There’s a track, you walk, you carry your stuff, you
meet other people. The main difference is that a pilgrimage has a special place at the
end, there’s a more or less fixed trail, there’s a religious context and there is both an
outer and an inner spiritual journey.
When Christians go on pilgrimage they travel somewhere that is special to their faith. It
might be to places written about in the Bible, such as where Jesus and the early Chris-
tians lived. It may be to a place where a miracle is said to have once happened or to
where a saintly person has lived, worked or is buried. Importantly, the journey itself
matters as much as arriving in the special place, because it gives the pilgrim (the person
on the journey) time to pray and to think. It’s an important part of spiritual life for many
Christians as we leave behind everyday concerns and spend time in the presence of God.
Over the years, places have become special for different reasons and because of different
people. On my journeys this summer I will visit the tiny island of Iona off the West
Coast of Scotland, sometimes called ‘The cradle of Christianity’.
I will also journey (walking of course!) to the parish church at Eyam,
Derbyshire where in 1665-1666 the heroism of the villagers is still
remembered when they listened to their vicar and pledged to ‘stay put’
and endure the plague rather than flee and infect the surrounding area.
276 people in the village died – including the vicar’s wife.
God (and feet) willing I will complete Cuthbert’s Way, a walk of some 70 odd miles
across country, to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Northumberland where in 635AD
Saint Aidan came from Iona and founded his monastery. The Christian message flour-
ished from there and spread throughout the world.
These will be some of my special places and I hope that my visits will bring me close to
God and to myself. I also hope and pray that you too will find special places to visit this
summer on your own journeys. Bon Voyage & Much Love, Rev’d Jane.

Weddings Galore Thank You For Tremendous Support at The May Fair
in the Church A wonderful day! The sun shone and faces new and old
turned out to support us.
The weddings display inside the church was enjoyed by
many. It was such a pleasure to have so many photographs
put forward. How the fashions have changed! Thank you to
everyone who loaned their dresses they looked absolutely
stunning. It was also touching to see all the many and varied
weddings that have been celebrated in our beautiful church.
Faces old & new joined us on the green for a really enjoyable
afternoon. Many thanks go to everyone who sponsored a
barrel! Thanks to the Dabbling Duck for organising this along
with the BBQ and to Richard, Robina, Carly, Andre, Janice,
Linda, Joy and everyone else who manned stalls or helped
with the setting up and taking down. It couldn’t happen with-
out you and Barry I’m sorry I was late!
The children from our primary school were the icing on the
cake. Thank you all and special thanks to Mrs Beardall and
Mrs Hall for this.
It was lovely to see the church and the community coming
together on a day like this. The money raised was a magnifi-
cent £1,325. However, it’s not just about money it’s about
people joining in, catching up and coming together.
A huge thank you to everyone. Anna
