Founded in Washington, DC nearly a century
ago, the values held by the firm’s founders endure
today throughout our international legal practice.

Introduction
Headquartered in Washington, DC, Covington has helped clients
navigate their most difficult legal and policy issues for nearly a century.
Today, Covington has more than 900 lawyers and advisors in offices
across Asia, Europe, and the United States and, in this increasingly
regulated world, Covington delivers global insight and advice to clients
on their most challenging deals and disputes.
From our Brussels office overlooking the Royal Palace, we offer services
to clients across a wide range of practice areas. We benefit from our
location in the European quarter, close to the main decision-making
institutions of the European Union. This enhances our ability to stay on
top of key developments in EU law.
When seeking a new position, it is critical that you select the best firm
for you. Many of our senior lawyers have been with the firm their entire
Peter Bogaert careers and particularly value the range of clients that they are able
Managing Partner to work for. This work includes representing Facebook, Inc. in its $22
Brussels Office billion acquisition of WhatsApp and $1 billion acquisition of Instagram,
and advising Illumina on a four-year project that will map genomes
for breakthroughs into cancer and rare diseases. What sets us apart as
a firm is our ability to combine tremendous strength in our litigation,
investigations, and corporate practices with deep knowledge of policy
and policymakers, and one of the world’s leading regulatory practices.
We also strongly encourage all of our lawyers to participate in pro bono
work. The American Lawyer has ranked Covington’s pro bono practice
among the top three U.S. firms for 17 of the past 21 years.
Welcome to Covington.

Principal Practices in Brussels
Following is a description of each of our principal practices in Brussels. The
demarcation between these areas is not rigid, and lawyers frequently work
across groups and work closely with other offices.

Our People
After studying law in Ghent, Stockholm, and Bruges, I started my professional career as
a competition lawyer at Covington immediately after completing my LLM in European
Law at the College of Europe.
I was fortunate to start my career in a very motivated and inspired team in Brussels,
focused on growing the practice group and the office while consistently delivering a high
quality work product. In Brussels, Covington stands out because of its very international
character. This is visible on two fronts: the impressive client portfolio includes clients
from all over the world, and we attract lawyers from all over Europe and beyond, while
maintaining strong relationships with our colleagues in all other offices. The firm has
a commitment to building and implementing a strong global and regional strategy.
This ensures a strong integration of all offices and allows for regular contact and solid
cooperation between Covington lawyers globally. This international atmosphere is both
inspiring and challenging.

Associate My work so far has covered a wide range of European and Belgian competition law
assignments, including multi-jurisdictional merger control filings, cartel cases and
behavioral matters, abuse of dominance, and state aid issues. I have advised clients across
a diverse range of sectors and on all sides of the spectrum—recently I successfully helped a
client intervene in a European merger control investigation as a third party complainant.
After graduating from Ghent University, I obtained an LLM from NYU law school in
2006, and received a PhD in EU law from the European University in Italy in 2010. The
following years I was a professor in EU law at the University of Copenhagen, but decided
that legal practice was a better fit for my professional aspirations.
When seeking an associate position, I too found it challenging to see the wood for the trees
between the various glossy marketing brochures of law firms. In my experience, Covington
is a wonderful place to work because of the people, the clients, and the opportunities.
First, in its pitches to clients, Covington emphasizes that its internal organization
ensures that work flows naturally to the lawyers most qualified for the task. Due to
a firm-wide sense of collegiality, this functions remarkably well across time-zones,
practice groups, and levels of seniority. Within months of my arrival I had worked with
our Washington and London offices, and written several publications jointly with peers.

Associate Second, Covington has an outstanding client-base with direct lines to the most senior
in-house lawyers of multinational companies. Often, a call to Covington is made when
even their brightest minds need assistance untangling a legal knot. As an associate,
this means that you’ll be expected to persistently push your legal thinking in pursuit of
precision, excellence, and top-notch quality. This is integral to the Covington brand.
Third, Covington views its associates as valuable, long-term assets and most of
all, colleagues. This translates into significant investments in continuous learning
appropriate to all levels of seniority. As associates mature, external exposure increases,
and you’ll be supported in developing a niche within your department or practice group.

After obtaining my master’s degree from Ghent University, I completed an LLM at
King’s College London, where I focused on EU administrative law. Drawn to the cross-
roads between law and policy, I started my career working for the European Parliament.
I was also involved in a variety of European Commission research projects, and worked
as a lobbyist. I soon wanted to return to legal practice, and was fortunate that I got to do
so at Covington.
From day one, I was involved in highly relevant, interesting, and complex files, thanks
to Covington’s impressive client portfolio. I get to work closely with Covington’s
senior lawyers, who are invariably leading experts in their respective disciplines, and I
therefore learn and progress quickly.
Thanks to the variety of the work, each day at Covington is different, especially as I
split my time between different practice areas—life sciences and privacy. On one given
Charlotte Ryckman day, I can advise a tech company on a privacy-related matter, perform research for a
Associate pharmaceutical company, or help a client with a product safety issue. My work also covers
different jurisdictions, and I work in three different languages on a nearly daily basis.
The nature of the work and the composition of the teams in the Brussels office allow
for junior lawyers to quickly receive interesting responsibilities and to interact directly
with our high-end clients. To me, these aspects while being part of one of the leading
firms worldwide provide the best of both worlds.
I came to Covington with experience in both law and public policy. I took degrees in
Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Oxford, and Law at Cambridge, the Bar
Vocational Course at City University, London, and an LLM at the College of Europe.
Before joining Covington in 2016, I worked as a legal editor for two years, for the
European Commission, and, from 2012, for the UK Ministry of Justice, principally on
legislative affairs.
It was precisely this combination of legal and policy experience that brought me to
Covington. The firm combines the leading professionals in regulatory fields—including
in life sciences, tech, data protection and privacy, competition, energy and environment,
and trade—with an excellent Public Policy and Government Affairs practice. On a
daily basis, I work with excellent lawyers and policy professionals, and draw on the
unparalleled experience of Covington’s senior lawyers and senior advisors–including,
Atli Stannard in the EU team, a former Prime Minister, a member of the UK House of Lords, three
ambassadors, and senior practitioners from all three key EU institutions.
Policy Advisor
This makes for an exciting, intellectually stimulating atmosphere—and is great fun. I
get to deal with complex and interesting legal and policy issues on a daily basis, working
directly with colleagues and clients based in many different jurisdictions. In a typical
day, I might work on virtual reality, genetic tests, Blockchain, and the external relations
powers of the EU, talking to colleagues in the London, Washington, and Silicon Valley
offices. Associates and policy advisors alike are well-supported, and encouraged to
develop their own specialisms in areas of interest. The atmosphere is collegial, and the
absence of an “origination credit” system encourages collaboration across teams and
practices, drawing together the best possible team for a matter or pitch. This helps offer
a better service to our clients—and makes work all the more enjoyable.
