It meets Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM or completion for 6 weeks


Grading

Final examination - 50%

Performance during workshop activities/PBL - 10%
CSP Clinical skills - 20%
Examinations / Quizzes:
 There will be one final examination of 1-2 hours in length.
 The examination is cumulative and may contain essay, short
answer, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, matching and multiple choice
type questions.
 Material from workshop, D2L and required readings will be
tested.
 All material covered, mentioned or even alluded to in class is
subject to examination.
 The Course Coordinator may schedule additional examinations
or quizzes that are considered consistent with the objectives of
the course.
 All exams/quizzes are mandatory. Unexcused absences or
tardiness (after the first student to have completed the exam
leaves the exam site) will result in a grade of zero (0) for that
exam unless the student has secured an excused absence for
the examination in question.
ABSENCE FROM AN EXAMINATION FORM
 It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and fill out this form in a
timely manner.
 The form is available from the Course Coordinator, the Medicine
Department secretary or from this D2L Course.
 The student is also required to contact the Department of Medicine
(secretary’s office 847-578-8412) to inform the Course Coordinator that
he/she will be absent from the examination regardless of the
circumstances necessitating the absence.
 The form must be completed and returned as soon as possible to the
Course Coordinator or departmental secretary.
 The Course Coordinator will determine if the absence is excused. If the
excused absence is allowed, the make-up examination must be taken
within a 10 day period following the original examination date.
 Failure to obtain an excused absence will result in a grade of zero (0)
for the examination in question.

 ALL MAKE-UP EXAMINATIONS WILL BE IN AN ORAL &/or


WRITTEN FORMAT.
EXAMINATION REVIEW:
 Scores will be posted on D2L.
 After exams are graded, you may make an
appointment to view the full exam for self-
study of incorrect responses.
Exams may not be copied in any way, nor
retained by the student.

Independent Study Project in Medicine:
 Each student will research a topic in
Medicine that relates to the Podiatry
Patient. Broad categories, like Diabetes,
will not be accepted.
Submit your potential choice of topic and
outline to me by 5 PM Friday this week.
I will soon thereafter advise if your topic has
been accepted, accepted with necessary
adjustments or denied.
 Within
each group, every student must
choose a separate topic.
Independent Study Project in Medicine:

 During the final week of the rotation:


each student will deliver a Power Point
Presentation
submit a written paper on the chosen subject.

 Written paper:

 In-depth Research on a particular area in Medicine and how that


relates to the Podiatric patient
 Minimum of 20 10 pages, double spaced
 Minimum of 15 10 peer reviewed sources as references, including
at least 3 2 citations from uptodate.com

 Topic proposal and Outline are due by 5 PM Friday of Week 1 to


Dr. Levinthal’s e-mail.
 Final paper is due by 8 AM on Tuesday of Week 6 (as .doc or
.doc x) 2 printed copies to Dr. Levinthal’s e-mail. Due before
workshop starts.
Independent Study Project in Medicine:

 Power Point presentation details:

 Cover your agreed upon topic


 10 minutes in length
 Include two multiple choice questions (with 4 choices
each A/B/C/D) that your classmates should be able to
answer after hearing your presentation. Print questions
with answers and turn in as you begin your presentation.
 These will count as 2 of your quizzes.

 Will be delivered on Tu or Th of Week 6.


 Everyone should be ready on Tu, You will be
randomly assigned.
Remediation:
 Remediation will be assigned on a case by
case basis at the discretion of the
department chair.
Attendance:
Attendance is Mandatory:
 Any absence during your Medicine Workshops should be
immediately reported to Dr. Levinthal. E-mail notification is
preferred at debra.levinthal@rosalindfranklin.edu.
 If you are unable to send an email, please call direct to Dr.
Levinthal at (847) 578-8441.

 The Student Handbook delineates the following:


 Any excused absence will be required to be made-up on a
one hour for one-hour basis and unexcused absences will
be made-up on a two hours for one hour basis.
Excused absences
 Must be made up at off-site Volunteer
community events (that are approved by
the Medicine Department.) (Check before
attending to be sure they will be accepted).
 Excused absences include such things as
illness, car accident, death in the family,
etc.
 Verification will be required.
Unexcused absences
 Will be made up on a two-hour for one hour basis.
 This time must be made up at the Clinic during
scheduled breaks (i.e. Christmas, Quarter break).
 This time may not be made up at volunteer events or at
the clinic during regular rotations.
 Unexcused absences include such things as tardiness,
not having verification for illness/car accident/deaths in
the family), etc.

 If a student receives two unexcused absences in one


clinical experience, the student may receive a failing
grade.
Absence Policy
 Absences must be made up no later than the
last day of the term that follows when the
absence occurred. If time is not made up by that
date, incomplete grades will convert to failure.
 A time make-up form must be filled out and
signed by the SCPM attending physician then
returned to Dr. Levinthal. Keep a copy for
yourself before turning it in. This form is posted
on D2L.
Absence Policy
 Students are responsible for any material
missed in the event of an absence.
 The clinical workshop education portion must be
made-up at the same point in the rotation
schedule during the next student rotation group,
if possible. If not possible, the time will be
made-up as described above.
 Absence (whether excused or unexcused)
exceeding 10% of the component may result in a
failure requiring repetition of the entire
component rotation.
Course Evaluation:
 An on-line course evaluation must be
completed by each student at the
conclusion of the course.
 Final grades cannot be released until this
has been completed.
Professionalism:
 Courtesy and professionalism is expected at all
times.
 You are expected to come prepared for
workshop. It is expected that you have read all
material provided on D2L ahead of time.
 Talking is disruptive to the lecturer and those
students sitting nearby.
 Cell phones are to be on silent or vibrate mode
only. No texting, phone use or Instant
messaging/Email computer type features will be
permitted at all during workshop or CSP.
 Students disrupting class for any reason may be
asked to leave at the discretion of the instructor.
Community Service Podiatry
 The location of community service will vary from day to day and by
the season. Currently there are 10 sites in Chicago and 11 sites in
Lake County.
 Start times vary by site. Please refer to schedule.
 You are responsible for getting yourself to your assigned location.
 Parking is quite limited at certain sites, so please consider
carpooling.
 Maps and addresses are posted on D2L.
 You must be on time, early is preferred.
 Bring all your instruments. Wear lab coat & school ID. Scrubs are
OK.

 The current schedule will be posted on D2L. It can frequently be


updated during the course of a semester.
 Please check D2L often as sites and schedules do have a tendency to
change. Last minute changes will be sent by email directly to anyone
involved.

 Review of the structure of the Autonomic Nervous System. Diabetic neuropathy; Charcoid
