B. Review

What makes objects

move the way they do?

The position
and motion of
objects can be
changed by
pushing or
pulling.

How do you
differentiate balance
force from an unbalance
force?
Balanced
forces do not
cause a change in
motion.
When balanced
forces act on an
object at rest,
the object will
not move. If you
push against a
wall, the wall
pushes back with
an equal but
opposite force.
Neither you nor
the wall will
move. Forces that
cause a change in
the motion of an
object
are unbalanced
forces.

C. Motivation

Traffic Jam

(The teacher will let

the students imagine
that they are in a moving
car with the car stopping
and immediately
accelerating almost every
minute due to traffic jam.)
(The students
will do the activity.)
While doing the activity,
what is the common reaction
of your classmates every
time the car assumingly
stops?

D. Presentation

In relation with our previous

activity, do you known whose
the person that can ultimately
explain your common reaction
whenever the cars suddenly
accelerate then stop?
Yes, ma’am!
He is Sir Isaac
Newton.
Sir Isaac Newton was a
physicist and mathematician
from England. His work laid
the foundation of classical
mechanics(also called
Newtonian physics or
mechanics in his honor)
and is generally credited
with jump starting the
scientific revolution.

Which works of Newton

do you think can give
explanation of your
reaction a while back?
Newton’s
First Law of
Motion.
What does the Newton’s
first law of motion
states?
Isaac Newton
's first law of
motion, also
known as
the law of
inertia, states
that an object at
rest will stay at
rest and an
object in motion
will stay
in motion with
the same speed
and direction
unless acted upon
by unbalanced
force.
For today’s’ lesson
Will be explaining
Newton’s first law
of motion; demonstrates
how the inertia of an
object affects its
motion; and relate the
concept of inertia to
daily life experiences.

E. Lesson Proper

For us to have a further

understanding about this
topic we be doing an activity
entitled, “Investigating
Inertia”.

1. Orientation
I will group the class into
five. Each group will be
given an envelope containing
the instructions, materials
needed and tasks of the group.

(The teacher will present

the rubrics as a guide in
accomplishing the tasks.)

You are only given five

minutes to work and a
maximum of three minutes to
present your outputs.
The most discipline group
will be given an additional
points and also with the
group to first finish
the tasks.

Go quietly to your
Respective groups and
finish the task I have
given you.
(The student
will proceed to
their respective
groups.)
2. Activity Proper

At the end of the lesson

the students will
be able to:
a. explain Newton’s first
law of motion; and
b. demonstrates how the
inertia of an object
affects its motion.

3. Culminating Activity

What happens when

you slowly pulled the
cardboard?

When we
slowly pulled
the cardboard,
the coin on top
moved with the
cardboard. The
frictional force
acting between
the coin and the
cardboard caused
the coin to stay
on top of the
cardboard and move
with it.

What happens when you

flipped the cardboard?

When the
coin was flipped
quickly, the
cardboard moved
forward but the
coin did not move
with it. When the
cardboard was
removed from
underneath it,
the coin dropped
into the glass.
The coin did
not move forward
with the
cardboard because
of the tendency
of the coin to
stay at rest
(inertia).
What happens when
you hit the coin at
the bottom?
Why is this so?

When we hit
the bottom coin
with the edge of
the ruler, it
moved out from
the pile of coins
but the other
coins stayed in
place. The
inertia of the
coins has caused
them not to move
out with the coin
that was hit by
the ruler.

F. Generalization

Based on the given activity,

How does the Law of Inertia
related to the balance and
balance forces?

If an object
is acted upon by
balanced forces,
its motion or its
velocity will not
change. Since
acceleration is
defined as the
change in
velocity over
time, then we can
say that the
object will not
accelerate. It
will only
accelerate if the
forces acting on
it are
unbalanced. This
is what the Law
of Inertia is all
about.
It states
that, “An object
will stay at rest
or move at
constant velocity
unless an
unbalanced
external force
acts on it.”
What is the effect
of mass to inertia?
The greater
the body’s mass,
the greater will
be its inertia.
G. Application

Going back to our first

Activity, the Traffic Jam,
How does the concept of
inertia applied to it?

The car and

us have inertia.
If the car comes
to a sudden stop,
our body tends to
keep moving
forward. When the
car starts moving
again, our body
tends to stay at
rest. We move
forward because
the car seat
exerts an
unbalanced force
on our body.

H. Valuing

Based on our first

activity, the traffic
jam, what do you think
is the importance of
using a seatbelt?

Being
strapped tightly
to the car, the
passengers share
the same state of
motion as the
car. As the car
accelerates, the
passengers
accelerate with
it; as the car
decelerates, the
passengers
decelerate with
it; and as the
car maintains a
constant speed,
the passengers
maintain a
constant speed as
well preventing a
passenger from
being thrown from
the vehicle.

IV. Evaluation
Besides from our
first activity, the traffic
jam, what daily life experience
you know is related to the
concept of inertia?

When you
stir coffee or
tea and stop,
the swirling
motion
continues due
to inertia.

A ball
rolling down a
hill will
continue to
roll unless
friction or
another force
stops it

V. Assignment
A. Advance
1. What does the Newton’s second law of motion
states?
2. Is there any relationship between acceleration
and any unbalanced force that acts on the body?
