Light and temperature strongly modulate plant growth and development. The variation in light
quality is perceived by a wide variety of photoreceptors, and the circadian clock integrates cyclic
changes in light and temperature, to measure time. This symposium aims to introduce new
information related to the molecular and physiological mechanisms involved in the perception of
light and temperature in plants, and their consequences on growth and development. We will
discuss works that develop different aspects of this regulation in model species, species of
agronomic interest and species natives of South America.

XXXI Reunión Argentina de Fisiología Vegetal. 13 - 16 noviembre 2016. Corrientes, Argentina.
Climatic change and environmental risks of intensive agricultural practices, require solutions that cater
to complex needs and promote improvements in sustainable agro-forestry productions. Focusing in
this context, discipline integration with outstanding proposals and prospective approach is required to
overcome the emerging demands of the agricultural sectors. In the next 20 years crop production
must be adapted to climatic change.
In this picture, agricultural practices could also help to cope with climatic change due to the synergism
between adaptation and mitigation. In this sense, the knowledge of these processes is of outstanding
importance. The molecular and physiological basis underlying the plant-microbe interaction cannot be
neglected to face the risks of climatic change, when managing crop production in sustainable
systems. The aims of this Symposium are: a) To put in the state of the art the investigations in Plant-
Microbe Interactions with the participation of researchers of different disciplines; b) To generate a
multidisciplinary forum for the exchange of scientific and technological information, in a reflective
space about the challenges of comprehensive study of Plant-Microbe Interactions; and c) To promote
collaborations between researchers, teachers, students, communicators, farmers and company
representatives, in order to promote the discussion of ideas with critical and prospective spirit.

In the framework of the challenges imposed by climate change to forestry production and to natural
forests worldwide, the objective of this symposium is to present the current knowlegde about how
trees in particular, and woody species in general, deal with water deficit, analysing response
mechanisms at different organization levels: from the whole plant to tissues and cells. Different key
traits –and novel methodological approaches to measure them- associated to drought stress
tolerance or avoidance will be presented with emphasis in their intraspecific variability. This within-
species variation is the basis for natural and artificial selection but it is still a subject poorly known. In
addition, achievements and challenges of new phenotyping methods will be discussed in order to
implement this knowledge into the selection of genotypes with a high adaptability to drought stress in
tree breeding or conservation program

Crop physiology: focalizing in resource use for improving productivity in future agricultural systems
The steady increase in global food demand registered during the last 50 years has been satisfied by
improved production of main grain crops. Nevertheless, chief technological achievements along the
same period did not modify the general trends in percent annual yield gains (1-1.6%, depending upon
the species), which are far distant from the estimated goal (2.4%) needed to satisfy global food
demand in 2050. During the last decade, mentioned lag in yield gains has been accompanied by an
important shift in land allocation to crops (marked increase of summer crops), and an increased
environmental risk due to farming of marginal land. This scenario, together with gloomy reports of
climate change, has alerted all scientific areas engaged with the production of extensive grain crops,
including Crop Physiology. Consequently, in this session we will focus on some challenges we will
face for granting food security in future cropping systems, where abiotic stresses will remain a key
issue and we will be prompted to improve resource use efficiencies. In this context, we will evaluate
the effects of breeding on crop productivity (retrospective analysis), as well as recent research
oriented to resource use at different levels (organs, crops, systems) and growing conditions.

Goals: Contemporary agriculture is faced with the necessity to ensure an adequate use of the
fertilizers, the maximization of plant performance in nutrient poor environments and the control of the
elemental composition of the harvestable plant fraction. Progress in genetic improvement of these
complex traits could be greatly helped by a proper understanding of the mechanisms that determine
them as well as the use of satisfactory phenotyping systems. This thematic session will focus on the
mechanisms that determine the efficiencies of acquisition and utilization of major nutrients, like
nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as on the design of protocols that allow evaluating them.
In addition, it will cover the partitioning of minor nutrients (particularly iron and zinc) to harvestable
fraction.

Regional crops play a vital role in the Argentinean rural economy due to their function as mobilizers of
local economies, generating not only sustainable economic benefits, but also work sources. Besides,
they offer the possibility of food self-sufficiency to medium and small holders; or the provision of raw
materials for food or biofuel industries. The aim of this symposium is to analyze the state of art on
physiological studies conducted with some tropical or subtropical species of regional importance in
Latin America, such as cassava (Manihot esculenta), yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), sugarcane
(Saccharum officinarum) and quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa). The study of physiological or
ecophysiological characteristics will be revised, in order to increase yield and quality of these crop
species, or to attend breeding programs. The development of procedures that make possible the
researchers approach will be also analyzed.

Seed germination is a critical step in the life of plants. Strong selection pressure operating on
germination of many plant species has promoted the evolution of complex mechanisms that integrate
endogenous and environmental signals regulating this process. In our country, the study of seed
germination summons researchers with a diversity of interests, ranging from basic research (for
example, those focused on signaling pathways, or ecology of wild species) to applied research related
to agriculture (such as studies focused in the environmental control of dormancy of weeds, or the role
of dormancy on crop emergence and pre-harvest sprouting). This symposium will gather researchers
working on different scales and topics related to seed biology, with the aim to present and discuss
current scientific approaches and recent results produced in Argentina.

The aim of this work was to determine the effect zone of soybean axes. Expression studies
of different maternal environments on seedling defined the action window for this protein during

fertilization levels (0, 75 and 150 Kg N ha-1).
Obtained results showed a reduction in the
emergence percentage of the progeny as
maternal light intensity and soil nitrogen supply
was reduced (p<0.05). Hypocotyls length
significantly increased when mother plants were

under higher soil nitrogen supply without water

environmental conditions.
Knowledge and methods developed in Plant Physiology studies have been useful to the development
of Plant Phenomics. Some of these contributions include the selection of traits to be phenotyped and
the development of sensors for measurement of these traits. Also, of phenotyping platforms as well as
criteria for the interpretation of the obtained data. Less frequent and known, the Phenomics of Plants,
par excellence a multidiscipline, has made and makes contributions to studies of Plant Physiology.
Deep phenotyping could be highlighted among these contributions. This symposium will discuss the
relationships between both disciplines through several relevant current examples. The studies to be
shown have been made by growing plants under different conditions (from the growth chamber to the
field), by characterizing phenotypes through different traits (from molecular to architectural), by
phenotyping at different organization levels (e.g. from seeds to canopy level), by applying empirical
measurements or through modeling. Focus will be applied on identifying the more likely perspectives
for fruitful exchanges between Plant Physiology and Plant Phenomics as well as on the most
promising avenues to achieve significant synergy between both disciplines.

Since plants are sessile organisms they use a variety of compounds to afford purportedly adverse
environmental conditions. Once perceived by particular tissues/organs, the different signals from the
milieu have to be recognized, interpreted and communicated to the rest of plant cells in order to
trigger functional responses towards the situation they face. In this symposium the influence of the
plant growth regulators (PGR) abscisic acid, auxins, gibberellins and nitric oxide will be discussed
regarding defined cell processes and in specific moments of the plants life, regulating gene
expression and cell growth and division. As well, the role of PGR on fruit and grain yield (quality and
quantity) in a scenario of restricted conditions imposed by the ambient will be debated.

Rice is a crop that plays an essential role in the economy of the NEA generating sustainable
economic benefits. Corrientes is the largest producer in the country with more than 43 per cent of
area sown and 45 per cent of the national production. As a result of climate change in recent years
were observed abnormal environmental conditions and unfavorable low temperatures in emergency
and extremely high temperatures during flowering - harvest, among other that leads to the decline of
the yield or to a decline in the quality of the grain as well as the increase in the incidence of pests and
diseases.
The aim of this symposium is to analyze the physiological processes that are affected in rice for these
environmental changes and evaluate strategies that favor its adaptation and reducing the impact of
climate change on this crop productivity.

In order to relate ecophysiological characters with plant breeding, it is required to emphasize the
analysis of the genetic structure of populations and also on the source of variability of materials of
study. For that, it will be necessary consider the scope and the agronomic application of those
physiological characters of populations. With this premise, the symposium will aim to analyze both the
ecophysiological characters of cultivars and natural populations of higher plants, populations and
genotypes of cotton and the genetic structures in warm-seasons grasses. In the four presentations
the results from experiments in eco-physiology will be analyzed in relation to the genetic structures of
populations or the type of cultivar evaluated in crop management and plant breeding, the evaluation
and selection of apomictic species and genetic consequences of types of reproduction of natural
populations and the related cultivated forms.

In its recent 5th Assessment Report on Climate Change (AR5), the IPCC argues that the continued
emission of greenhouse gases will cause further warming of the atmosphere in the future than at
present and long-term changes in all components of the climate system, such as increased frequency
of extreme events (eg heat waves, droughts, floods, etc.).
Most likely, Argentina will continue to have an economic matrix based on the agricultural sector, which
makes the country highly sensitive to climate variability and projected changes in climate.
The aim of this panel is to analyze: a) what are the climate projections for the coming decades for
Argentina; b) how these projections can impact on agricultural production, especially agricultural and
fodder crops, and possible strategies to adapt to these changes; and c) what changes are expected in
the global integration of Argentina in major export markets.
