Teacher Candidate for Science Endorsement: Kristen Muller

Instructor: _____________________________________________________________

School: Shallowford Falls Grade: 5

Lesson Topic: Animals- First Grade

Write a brief summary of your experiences teaching this lesson, addressing the following
questions:

 What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)
Overall, the lesson went very well. This was an introductory lesson. The students
enjoyed the Dr. Seuss book, Which Pet Should I Get? Anytime literature is
brought into another subject I like seeing the connections made by the students,
at any grade.

 How well were the lesson’s student performance objectives attained?

The lesson objectives were attained. The students were able to understand
needs of animals, especially pets.

 Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry, and sense-

making by all students?
Yes, this lesson led to understanding by all 1st graders in the classroom.

 Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support students’

construction of knowledge and understanding of important scientific concepts
and processes?
Yes, my knowledge helped, but I had to remember to bring everything down to a
1st grade level. I’m used to go much faster and making references to other
lessons. I had to pause and just focus on the lesson objective.

 When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will you do
differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.) to improve student
learning for all students?

I will not be re-teaching this lesson since I am not a 1st grade teacher. If I had to
do it again, I would hope that I was full time in that grade level so that I could
relate to the students and their individual learning styles more. It’s hard when
you just walk in and teach a lesson without all the background knowledge of the
class.
