The tests are to:be conducted in accordance with the requirements of the state and local health authorities. 2.0 REQUIREMENTS FOR TEST AREA 4 2.1 Percolation tests shall be made in soil that has the same degree of compaction and drainage that will exist when the leaching area is in operation. 2.2 The surrounding area and immediate test location shall be kept well drained during the test. 2.3 Where percolation tests are made for design of sanitary disposal systems, the tests shall not be made in areas containing 2.3.1 Frozen ground, 2.3.2 standard compaction fills less than six months old, or 2.3.3. rock, hardpan, or in soil where the water table is less than four feet below finished grade. 3.0 PREPARATION FOR TESTS 3.1 Where percolation tests are being made to determine the required area for disposal of septic tank effluent, the soil shall be probed to a minimum depth of four feet below the proposed finished Grade to assure that no rock, hardpan, or ground water is encountered. 3.2 Dig or bore a hole four inches or more in diameter with vertical sides to the depth at which it is proposed to locate the bottom of the leaching area. 3.3 Seratch the bottom and sides of the hole with a knife blade or sharp-pointed instrument to remove any smeared, cemented or loose soil surfaces, so as to provide a natural soil interface into which water may percolate. Remove all loose material from the hole and add two inches of coarse sand or fine gravel to protect the bottom from scour and sediment. 3.4 Over the gravel carefully fill the hole with clear water to a minimum depth of 12 inches. Refill the hole with water as necessary to maintain a minimum 12-inch depth for at least 8 hours and preferably overnight. HERCULES STANDARD Hercules Incorporated HERCULES Wimingion, DE 19899 es SOIL PERCOLATION TEST TENTATIVE 6-27-8 sumousos seervaiorsrace | amnoveo evs ince 2 of 3 lau 4.0 INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONDUCTING TESTS 4,1 Percolation rates shall be measured for a duration of approximately 24 hours after water is first added to the hole. 4.2 If water remains in the test hole after the soaking period, the depth of the water shall be adjusted to approximately 6 inches over the gravel. From a fixed reference point, measure accurately the drop in water level during successive 30-minute periods. The percolation rate may be determined when two successive measurements agree within 10 percent. 4.3 I€ no water remains in the test hole after the soaking period, clear water must be added to bring the depth of water to approximately 6 inches over the gravel. Refill the hole as necessary to maintain this water level for approximately 4 hours. After 4 hours, the drop in water level shall be measured as described in paragraph 4.2. 4.3.1 After the soaking period, soils in.which the first 6 inches of water seeps away in less than 30 minutes, water must be added to the hole to maintain the 6inch depth for one hour. Measurements shall then be made as described in paragraph 4.2, except the time interval shall be 10 minutes. 5.0 INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS = 5.1 From measurements taken under Section 4, the percolation rate is calculated as the time in minutes it takes for water to fall one inch. 5.2 When the percolation rate (t) has been calculated, the rate at which liquid may be applied for subsurface disposals (Q) may be determined from Figure 1. The application area for subsurface disposal through a soil absorption field (tile field) shall be the total bottom area of the trenches. The application area for seepage pits and french drains shall be the vertical wall area below the inlet. Example: For a percolation rate (t) equal to one inch in 30 minutes, the allowable application rate (@) from Figure 1 is 0.80 gallons per square foot per day. Thus, for an estimated daily flow of {7200 gallons, a leaching area of 1,500 square feet must be provided. I SOIL PERCOLATION TEST HERCULES STANDARD ES=1A1- TENTATIVE 6-27-8 mot_3 of 3. Ine. Since these Soints cannot be doweled, the slab thickness at these locations, if accessible to wheel loads, should be increased by 25 percent and taper fo the regulac thickness in 5 feet.
