• After a two way preposition, if you can ask Wo? (Where?): vor (before),
hinter (behind), über (over), unter (under), neben (next to), an (at), zwischen
(between), auf (on), in (in)
• After a dative verb (there are not many, with only about 50 you’re
mostly done!): antworten (to answer), danken (to thank), einfallen (to come to
mind), fehlen (to miss), glauben (to believe), gratulieren (to congratulate), helfen
(to help), raten (to guess), schmecken (to taste), vertrauen (to trust), verzeihen (to
forgive), zuhören (to listen)
• After verbs that can take two objects: bringen (to bring), kaufen (to buy),
empfehlen (to recommend), erklären (to explain), geben (to give), leihen (to lend),
sagen (to say), schenken (to give), schicken (to send), schreiben (to write),
stehlen (to steal), tragen (to wear), verbieten (to prohibit), wünschen (to wish),
zeigen (to show)
Er bringt der Freundin einen Kaffee. (He brings her friend a coffee.)
Tip: Use the dative for the receiver and the accusative for the thing.
Notice that you have to add an “n” to the nouns in the dative plural (if there is not
one already from the plural form):
