Stewart Technology Associates has experience with a wide range of Finite Element Programs including
NISA, our basic in-house package, SESAM (DnV), ASAS (Atkins, UK), Algor, ANSYS, NASTRAN and
STRAN. Our general approach to structural design and analysis work is to solve fundamental structural
behavior from as simple a technique as possible, backed up where necessary with finite element
analysis. We specialize in dynamic and non-linear structural behavior, generally linked with
hydrodynamic loading. Large numbers of “standard” problems are solved semi-automatically with
in-house developed applications using Mathcad, Excel and other software packages. We have worked
on most types of offshore structures including fixed platforms, TLPs, jack-ups, semi-submersibles,
barges, drillships, buoys, pipelines, risers, moorings, anchors, and foundations of many types.

Stewart Technology Associates (STA) has specialized in structural analysis, structural design and all
important afloat stability analysis aspects of liftboats. The work began in 1989 when STA was
commissioned by the US Coast Guard to produce guidelines for the structural analysis of liftboats.
STA has been involved with analysis, design modifications, and full design of numerous liftboats for
operations in US waters and overseas, subject to US Coast Guard, ABS, UKHSE, and other regulatory
requirements. STA LIFTBOAT, a program for liftboat design review is used by the US Coast Guard as
their standard tool for liftboat License approval.
Halliburton’s
Irish Sea Pioneer
Stewart Technology Associates (STA) has analyzed and assisted with design modifications for
numerous jack-ups of many different designs, including, units with independent leg supported units,
and other unique designs. The program STA JACKWAVE was originally developed in 1987 for the
site specific evaluation of jack-up rigs. This program is continuously evolving. It is used by marine
warranty surveyors, drilling contractors and engineering companies. It has been applied on behalf of
oil companies to jack-up rigs world-wide. For detailed design work STA uses it’s own software as
well as FE analysis and GHS for stability analysis. STA is familiar with most classification society
and regulatory agency requirements for jack-up rigs.
Stewart Technology Associates (STA) has designed numerous mooring systems for offshore, coastal,
inland waterway, commercial and naval operations. Projects include single, two point and spread
moorings for single vessels, tankers in tandem, and multiple vessel moorings. Analysis tools
include, the Atkins AQWA suite, ORCAMOOR, ORCAFLEX, BOMOOR, STA SPM, STA CATENARY,
NISA and other specialized software applications for determining wind, wave and current loads. STA
is familiar with API, ABS, Lloyds, DnV, NMO, and other regulatory authority requirements for mooring
system design criteria. STA has also specialized in anchor performance prediction.
Mr. W.P. (Bil) Stewart, P.E., President of Stewart Technology Associates (STA) has provided expert
testimony in many marine and offshore litigation cases. These cases have involved vessel collisions,
vessel sinkings and groundings, vessel capsizes, production platform toppling, barge buckling, major
structural damage to jack-ups under tow, jack-up elevated failures, anchor failures, and mooring
system failures. Mr. Stewart has provided expert opinions for cases in the United States, in the
United Kingdom, and in South Africa. He is a registered Professional Engineer (Texas) and a
Chartered Engineer in Europe.
Numerous technical papers and articles have been written by Mr. Stewart, who is also closely
associated with the activities and research undertaken by several learned societies, particularly the
Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers. A broad background in Civil Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Hydrodynamics, Offshore
Structures and Structural Dynamics, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, enables STA to
provide a wide and well balanced service to lawyers. Many legal cases, especially those involving
forensic examination of accidents, require knowledge and experience spanning several of the above
technical disciplines.
STA produces high quality technical reports including clear diagrams which enable the technical
analyses to be easily understood. Extensive use is made of computer software and state-of-the-art
analytical and simulation techniques. Almost invariably a color “notebook” computer and printer
accompany Mr. Stewart when he attends (or provides) depositions, visits clients’ offices, or simply
travels out of town. With this computer, reports can be immediately modified, new analyses
performed, existing analyses revised, and hard copy provided anywhere in the world, offshore and
onshore. Technical reports produced by STA have won clients millions of dollars over the last fifteen
years.
In addition to a wide range of technical analysis software, STA maintains computer databases of
offshore and marine accidents, tanker oil spills, plus databases of construction and other offshore
costs. These, and other databases, can be most useful in maritime litigation. STA also produces
graphic visual aids and physical models for use at trial.
Expert testimony work is a small but important part of the normal STA workload.

Stewart Technology Associates (STA) offers design services and specialized analytical tools for
marine anchors of all types. STA has been at the forefront of anchor research for the last nine years.
The computer program STA CHAIN, for calculating the geometry and tension distribution of the
anchor chain in the sea bed, was developed for the US Navy in 1988. The computer program STA
ANCHOR, for the prediction of drag anchor embedment and holding capacity, was first released in
1991. Programs STA PILE, and STA PULLOUT are for design of pile anchors and plate, or VLA
(Vertically Loaded Anchors), respectively. The latest version of STA ANCHOR (released in 1995) has
been calibrated for the new generation of VLAs. Collectively, these computer programs enable
engineers to design and analyze a wide variety of anchor systems. Analytically it can be shown that
conventional modern drag embedment anchors will resist large amounts of uplift in soft soils. This
has been demonstrated with full scale and centrifuge tests. Although regulatory agencies are
reluctant to accept conventional drag anchor designs which incorporate uplift at the sea bed, it has
been demonstrated that such uplift is tolerable and, especially in deep water, enormous cost savings
can result.
STA ANCHOR contains a library of standard anchor sizes and detailed geometries. The program
permits the user to edit these geometries and to specify the sea bed soil strength profile (which may
be stepped). The maximum anchor capacity is predicted using a novel force-moment equilibrium
method, accounting for geotechnical forces on both the anchor and the forerunner buried in the sea
bed. The user may specify any uplift angle at the surface of the sea bed.
STA PILE incorporates suction embedment calculations, as well as standard anchor pile design
calculations for multi-layered soils.

DOWNTIME ANALYSIS
FOR DRILLING VESSELS
STADOWN2 is a downtime analysis program developed for Chevron Petroleum Technology. It is extremely
fast and easy to use. The program predicts the days per year of downtime for different drilling vessels based
upon different drilling activities being limited by different vessel motions, or wind conditions. Twenty four, or
more, activities involved in drilling and/or completing a well are defined by the user and a duration for each
activity is specified.
Data for four vessels and one geographic location are contained in each copy of the program. The user can
have multiple copies of the program with numerous different locations and vessels.
Versions of the program can be customized for floating production operations, where vessel motions may cause
production downtime, for example due to sloshing in production systems.
