Though the pre-production process I looked at different sub-titles to help me create a successful

production.

Logistics

Scouting my cast was very important to me I need to find the right people to represent my
production and portray it how I intended. For my main character I asked each person I interviewed
to read and act out 2mins of beginning of my short movie this gave me change to see if they had
what it takes and how confident they was. I interviewed 3 people before deciding on Beatriz as she
showed the right emotion for the character for my horror movie not only did I get her to play the
young girl(main character) but the predator the stalker as she could convey a range of emotions and
characters.

After my main character was sorted I wanted to bring my movie to life with the location, I wanted a
small and creepy house with lots of sharp corners for the predator to hide around, when I thinking of
a house I realised all the points I was looking for was in my own house after asking my mum for
permission I had full ability to use my house in my movie. It had the general set up I was looking for
therefore I didn’t have to fork out loads of money on props.

Props were important to my movie as it helped show what was going on in each scene as there was
no speaking throughout my movie, my main characters props where important to her costume she
wore a black bodycon dress with white high heels and a black leather jacket fitting the seriral of her
coming back from the club, to my advantage all the other props I need e.g shower, kettle and bed
were already in the house. When organising my schedule for my movie I had to take inconsideration
if all crew and cast could work and be there for the time set to record, My schedule was
predominantly based around my cast and crews timetables and deadlines as I would need them for
the production to work, also if the place for my location is open for hire at the that time, after
sorting out the times, which was the same with all equipment used e.g Canon camera, tripod and
lighting but not many props were required for my production and if they were they were all
available to me all the time anyway.

Creative process

Thought out the creative process I thought it would be helpful to look at other films that could
inspire me for the making of my short film, the first film I looked at was Psycho I wanted to have a
reference to this Hitchcock film because it is largely know to be the best horror film of all time. It has
an iconic scene in the bathroom where the heroin is attacked by the killer. I am going to reference
this scene in my film, but the twist is the character is ok. Also the other film was Scream like Scream
the young girl in my film is alone but instead of a phone call she receives a text message from the
killer, it is also an invasion film. I drafted my script twice as the first one wasn’t long enough and
didn’t have a very clear synopsis therefore I had to go back and make the narrative of the short film
clear and easy to understand I did this by adding no speech in it just emotion and body actions. The
storyboard shows how simple but affective the movie is and shows how the tension builds up
throughout to make it a horror film. Sounds were mainly sourced from YouTube making sure all
sounds were copyright free to ensure my short film doesn’t get removed or I don’t get a copyright
strike from the owner or worse a fine or more legal issues. Some sounds were Foley like the sounds
like of door unlocking and the kettle.
Finance

Finance wasn’t a problem for us and not much organising was needed as we didn’t really need
anything the sixth form didn’t already have, all I used from the sixth form was a camera, tripod and
lighting this was all free to hire but the con was the hire of the equipment was only for two weeks
this was sometimes a problem when you wanted do last minute filming but this was easy overcome
because after returning the equipment you could hire them out again the next day. The rental of the
equipment cost nothing making our production planning for the equipment quite simple and also
affordable.

Ensuring health and safety on set

To ensure our cast and crew were safe and healthy we were required to do a risk assessment this is
because when filming, people have many things on their minds, things can get rushed, and risks can
increase. Even simple things can become dangerous because this is not an ordinary situation.

Risk assessment
The three steps I used to write my risk assessment was •Identify all the hazards •Evaluate the risks
•Identify measures to control the risks. The two main hazards were Tripping hazards to overcome
this I needed to move tape down cables and objects that could be tripped over also Lifting hazards
to overcome this I had to go carefully when moving or lifting heavy or dangerous things, ask
someone to help you. Another risk was a fire risk however this was a very low risk however to
prevent anyone from getting harmed in case there was a fire I made sure everyone knew where the
emergency exits were and made sure the alarms were working. Also I have a shower scene in my
movie slipping in the bathroom would be a low hazard but something to be taken into consideration
and the electrical equipment getting wet that is something that should be monitored carefully so
nothing gets damaged.

Organising equipment in a timely manner

When it came to hiring out equipment from the sixth form to guarantee we got the equipment we
required we need to ask a week before, we was allowed to hire the equipment for two weeks max
also We need to fill out a sheet when we were handed the equipment and when the equipment was
given back to ensure nothing was broken or damaged and to make sure all of the equipment was
returned to the department so nothing goes missing.

Scheduling

When sorting out the scheduling for my movie I needed to make sure everyone including the cast
and crew were free on the same day at the right time I did this by producing call sheets with had all
the information of each crew and cast for example full name, number, the character they played or
what they did as there job also general crew call and time and shoot call and time. There was no
problem with the weather as all filming took place inside so scheduling the weather wasn’t needed.

Communicating with cast and crew

For the cast we required all actors to sign an actor’s agreement to say they approved being on video
and in the production and on YouTube, I communicated with both cast and crew though out when
reading the script out load and explaining it and answering any questions they had on the start day
also going through all the equipment with them, and every new day we would get together before
starting recording I would put 10 minutes aside to answer any new questions and making sure
everyone knew the aim of the day and go through any new changes to the filming. They could
approach me at any time if there was any issues on set.

Monitoring progress

When monitoring the progress of the short film we had to make a footage log and also a production
log. We used this to log anything new we filmed that day and what we achieved this help me
understand if we was on the right track and getting enough done in each day. We would also
document the shots that didn’t go to plan for example if 20 shots were filmed in one day but only 12
were successful then all would be logged. The production log shows the dates of when we filmed
and what we wanted to achieve it also shows the outcomes of that date and if we need to film in
that location again.

Contingency planning/contingency planning

Throughout my filming process there was no big problem, only the fact the camera died once when
recorded but nothing was lost which was pure luck to stop this happening again the camera was put
to charge up fully every day after filming, my main problem came when I started to edited and put
the movie together this process took longer than it should have done as program I was using to
edited didn’t save any work every time I updated it, this happened no less than five times before I
was suggested to put the already edited work onto a hard drive, after doing this my problem was
quickly resolved. It was much longer to do this but all worked edited was still there.

When planning my production, the difficulties I faced was making the script too complicated after
getting advice on it I decided to make the movie a silent one with only Foley sounds and naturalistic
sounds.

To improve my project management in the future I will make my shot list so much more detailed as I
found myself winging some aspects of the movie I will take more time on the planning and
preparation to make filming run more smoothly.
