denounced the murder of
another journalist -- the
11th victim since the start
of the Duterte administra-
tion in 2016 -- on Thursday
afternoon.
The National Union
of Journalists of the Phil-
ippines (NUJP) and the
Davao del Norte Press and
Radio-TV Club (DNPRC)
denounced the killing of
Dennis Wilfredo Denora,
publisher of the commu-
nity newspaper Trends
and Times in Panabo City,
Davao del Norte.
“Denora was the 11th
journalist killed in the less
than two years since Pres-
ident Rodrigo Duterte as-
sumed office and the 184th
since 1986,” the NUJP
noted.
The victim was shot by
an unidentified gunman
who fled on foot after the
shooting, Panabo City po-
lice reported.
Denora, 67, was seated
in front of a sedan car that
was cruising along the
city’s national highway
when he was shot.
He was killed on the
spot.
The NUJP said that
while there was still no
official word on the possi-
ble motive for his murder,
it was likely related to his
work as a journalist.
“Denora’s colleagues in
the province acknowledge
that he was ‘fearless’ in his
commentaries in broad-
cast and print,” the group
added.
The NUJP-Davao
Chapter said Denora’s kill-
ing was an affront on press
freedom and amplifies the
existing climate of fear
among journalists who
are working in their local
communities.

the worsening state of me-

up here for a benefit event
to raise funds for the vic-
tims of the road crash that
killed five and severely
injured three in Alegria
town in Surigao del Norte
on May 25.
“The event titled Yul
Be In Our Hearts aims
to raise funds as a form
of support for those who
had perished as well as to
those who survived but
still in the hospital in the
recent road crash in Alegria
town in Surigao del Norte.
Proceeds will be donated
three who survived and still
struggling in the hospital
with their hospital bills
and hopefully some to the
families on those who per-
ished. Hope that everyone
would support the event,”
said Carmen Docdocil,

with a big bang over the weekend.

enjoyed to their full gusto dancing
and simply having a good time.
Pulse Live started in 2007 but it
was only in May 2010 when things
spiced up with the entry of a new
investor Heiko Opitz.
Heiko together with his wife’s
brother Alfred decided to overhaul

team that clashed with
government forces after the
raid. They were identified
by village officials but by
then, their cadavers had
been “taken by their com-
panions / relatives.”

The nature of the beast
SO... A few days ago, I saw a news
feature on women’s empowerment. Each
Game On! time I see one of these
things I’m impressed
by the passion ema-
nating from the wom-
en expressing their
sentiments. Passion-
ate, articulate, intel-
ligent, well-meaning,
idealistic, hopeful.
Sometimes, though,
Rhona Canoy in our eagerness to
push a particular agenda—any agenda,
for that matter—we oftentimes become
myopic.
Having grown up the only girl with
three brothers, I suppose I unknowingly
lived the women empowerment credo.
It was not easy to claim my own equal
space. The fact that I was the eldest and
female held no value nor relevance. And
having to defend myself against physical
onslaught was ordinary, to say the least.
It goes without saying that I was quite
skilled at verbally and facially provok-
ing these attacks. It was never seen as a
male attempt to oppress or dominate or
even abuse. Somehow among us sib-

phases towards adulthood, I grew more
and more aware of the peculiar and
negative dynamics between men and
women. The attempt to understand this
strange relationship led me to scruti-
nize how we are subliminally groomed
for the mindset. As hard as women are
going to try to change how we are per-
ceived and treated by men, nothing will
happen unless we are brutally objective,
and yet subjective with surgical preci-
sion.
For as long as women buy into the
traditional expectations, we aren’t going
to me very successful at having the
world see us as equal to men. Or maybe
we should be clear to ourselves--what
are we empowering ourselves for? We
are not equal to men, let me point this
out. If equal means the same, we are
never going to be equal to men. By
our very nature and physicality we are
different. Not inferior. Different. Maybe
that’s what we need to understand and
internalize from the get go. Maybe we

place as buying raisins from a drugstore
– that she spent Philhealth’s funds for a
year in a hotel where the cheapest room
costs 3,800 per night. “More or less

was okay, that’s why she did it. Imag-
ine you have a Philhealth president na

Dela Serna’s lack of aptitude – and
propriety too – was made manifest by
how she mishandled Philhealth’s oper-
ations, and how she threw her weight
around, misused her powers by oppress-
ing officers and staff that did not earn
her liking, and summarily suspended
officers despite lack of probable cause/
due process, accordingly just because
“she can.”
Rep. Johnny Pimentel of Surigao del
Norte’s 2nd District and chairperson of
the House Committee on Good Gov-
ernance and Accountability, quipped,
“Noon pa marami nang nagsasabi sa
akin, bago pa yan lumabas, na wala
siyang alam, na grabe ang gastos nya,
charged lahat sa Philhealth. I want her
out of there.”

no qualms to say “I am sorry” when one
commits a mistake are just some of the
ingredients that contribute to a lasting
union.
Somehow, I believe that it is the wife
that makes the husband. A man may be
the bread winner, traditionally, but it is
the woman, the good wife, that holds the
family together.
My first marriage didn’t last a de-
cade. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be. The
ox is no match for a tiger. My second, an
ox like me, came about and developed
under totally different circumstances.
The absence of a serious courtship made
it unique in a way. There was something
in between that drew us to each other.
I can’t even remember saying “I love
you” even when we were already into
intimate relationship by living together.

tioners of our politics. Quintessentially

roots, thus of Phil-
ippine society as a
whole.

naïve, they pander to the masses and
buy their loyalty. Manipulating the
underprivileged, the under-achiever, and
the impressionable (who outnumber the
community’s sensible sectors), they get
to dominate grassroots society.
They’re great at playing the classic
game of patronage—dishing out favors,
rewarding sycophants, squandering
public resources—and turn otherwise
honorable people into mendicants and
fierce loyalists even as they themselves
make a living out of politics.
The techno-savvy among their sy-
cophants are the trolls of today’s social
media, ever on the lookout to pounce
on their bosses’ critics and, like Hitler’s
Brown-shirts and storm troopers, are
quick to demolish any hint of dissent.
Ruthlessly and relentlessly.

This carrot and stick style of gover-
nance—carrot for sycophants, the whip
against dissenters—effectively paints
a portrait of an iron will too fierce to
disobey, defy, or challenge.
Instant punishment or retribution
meted out to the defiant or the dissenter
captures the imagination of the masses.
It telegraphs a chilling message: either
cooperate and play along or lose sta-
tus, privilege, and advantage. Rodrigo
Duterte is today’s incarnate practitioner
of this brand of ruthless politics.
Patronage impresses and dazzles the
naïve and impressionable. It feeds the
belief among the masses that trapos are
the source of every benefit or service
provided by government. As preposter-
ous as this may seem, a lot of people
actually believe so.
Trapos are highly skilled in exploit-
ing human weakness and greed. They
even make everyone believe that they
owe a “debt of gratitude” to trapos as
their benefactors. Thus are projects in
the community portrayed as proof of
the trapo’s “generosity” and “caring”
instead of as compliance with duty and
obligation.

Not least, trapos excel in reminding
people that the projects they initiate
represent a “debt” of gratitude that
people owe them, payable at election
time. Endless reminders of this “debt”
is manifested in notices and billboards
in project sites, in public facilities, and
in the commons. It is shameless cred-
it-grabbing, of course, but it is done with
impunity.
This is the practice Tagalogs term as
“Epal”—showing off (nagpapapel). A
word formed by inverting the syllables
as in Erap (pare) or yosi (sigarilyo). It’s
not only unethical, it’s illegal. But it
continues nonetheless.
This brazen propaganda has wreaked
untold havoc on the Filipino psyche,

in their professional careers.
And yet subconsciously ac-
cepting the pre-defined role
and full responsibility of being
a housewife and mother, the
two most traditional expec-
tations in this world. Because
they are women. Men will
come home after a long, tir-
ing day at the office and the
traditional imbalance kicks in.
The women become servile
to these men, even after they
have spent an equally long
and tiring day at the office.
Expected to supervise the
household, the evening meal,
the comfort of their husbands,
their children’s homework
(blessed if they have the lux-
ury of hired help).
It will never occur to most
men to pick up the slack and
take care of domestic things if
the wife should, for some rea-
son, be late. It will never occur
to most men to attend their
children’s school parent con-
ference unless there is no other
choice. It will never occur to
most men to check the kitchen
pantry and cupboards to make
a grocery list, and then go to
the grocery by themselves so
their wives don’t have to. It
will never occur to most men
to do the family’s weekly
laundry because… well, it
just will never occur to them.

of women to become stronger
and collectively push the id-
iomatic envelope before we
can even make a dent.
All the brouhaha over the
President’s onstage kiss with
some women while he was in
Korea is a very clear case in
point. Oh, yes. Just as many
men complained and raised a
ruckus over it. Take note. Men
who already hate the president
to start with. Or at least take
issue with his nature and his
demeanor. And yet, the men
and women who support
him totally are so cavalier
and completely brush off his
actions. But what Duterte
showed publicly is how many
men treat women as a rule. A
high-positioned male friend of
mine left me stunned when he
casually made a joke (in my
presence) to one of his female
subordinates. He was talking
about how her breasts had
grown larger since she joined
the company and how, if she
was going to come any closer,
he would squeeze them. This
man is highly-educated, os-
tensibly a good husband and
father (yes, he has a daughter),
an upright member of society
(pun definitely intended). And
yet, this mindset reveals itself
even if only through jokes.
And for as long as the man is
the boss, hardly any woman is
going to complain for fear of
being fired.
We live in a society where
men decide what role women
play, where men decide how
women should be treated,
where young boys are taught
to see girls as the weaker
sex. Oh, yes. How many
times have we heard or said,
“Please don’t hit your sis-
ter because she’s a girl and
you’re not supposed to hit
girls”? Thereby planting the
evil seed of seeing females
as weak and inferior. Why
not, “Please don’t hit anyone
because it’s disrespectful and
violent”?
And for as long as young
girls are taught by media and
their unenlightened mothers
to regard men as the ticket
to heaven, this struggle is
going to continue. Oh, yes.
How many mothers have we
seen, especially in the malls
and restaurants, pimping out
their daughters to aliens in
the hope that the whole family
may benefit from this arrange-
ment? And how many young
girls have we seen with older
decrepit (probably married)
men because of the same
goals? We have so much yet
to do in order to right this
imbalance. And even more
yet to learn.
It should not be about
women’s empowerment. It
should be about redefining
respect in our society. Women
shouldn’t need to be empow-
ered. Men and women should
be reprogrammed and enlight-
ened. Frankly, I don’t know
how that is going to get done,
but for each women who finds
her strength, that’s one less
individual that needs fixing.

We started from scratch and
everything was a gamble. Liv-
ing on a P2,000 monthly sala-
ry at that time was simply not
enough to start a family. We
probably survived because
I didn’t go into any serious
vice and she was (and still is)
not a “gastador” or one who
spends so much on unneces-
sary things. Thrifty she is.
It wasn’t easy, more so
when we had our two children
already. There was a time
when things were really bad,
financially. This is one story I
would like to share with you.
There was a period of
financial crisis that we had to
let the kids have their meal
first and we made do with
their leftovers. One time I
asked her, “Wala ka ba mag-
basul nga miuban kanako?”
And she said, “Nganong
nangutana ka ana?” I said,
“Lisud man kaayo ta ron.”
And she retorted, “Ngano,
pagsugod nato, naa ba diay
ta’g kuliro?”
Indeed, we started with
nothing, not a centavo in bank
savings. It was a gamble but
it paid off.
My brother, the youngest
in the family, once called me
a survivor. Maybe he is right.
I just work and work, making
the best out of any opportu-
nity that comes along. Had I
engaged in vices, that would
have been a lot different.
Of course, my siblings
have always been there for
me. The blessings I got from
them helped a lot. It was that
kind of blessing that I admon-
ished my children to replicate
when they become successful
in life.
Our plan to celebrate our
35th has unfortunately been
hampered (health reasons).
We originally planned to go
to Davao by land and visit
nice places along the way. A
week-long sightseeing trip
would have been it. Well, it’s
going to be a quiet celebration
with families just the same.
To my fellow husbands,
you don’t have to love your
wife too much or less. Just
reciprocate.

There’s no point telling
such folks to resist or es-
chew patronage or bribery
because “it’s their taxes
that’s being given away,
squandered, or stolen.” In
the first place, they don’t
pay income taxes and own
very little. And they know
that what’s being squan-
dered is not theirs but loot
from political exploiters,
economic predators, tax
evaders, and money-laun-
derers.
Ultimately, all that mat-
ters to such simple-minded
voters is what they can get
no matter how paltry. It’s
what poverty or ignorance
does to otherwise decent
people.
To such folks, syco-
phancy is the name of the
game; to make Sipsip, to
suck up to the rich and
powerful. To trapos, it’s the
tried and tested technique of
siphoning off goodies from
the Horn of Plenty (govern-
ment and corrupt oligarchs).

Ride-sharing firm eyes providing subsidies to its drivers
RIDE-SHARING firm Grab
Philippines is eyeing to provide
subsidies to its drivers to mo-
tivate them to render quality
services to passengers amid the
current limited supply of trans-
portation network vehicle ser-
vices (TNVS) units.
The enhanced incentive to
drivers will also help Grab re-
coup the increase in its operating
costs in the past few years.
“We will be providing spot
incentives. These incentives will
be applied the moment a booking
is made. We need to widen the
radius in order that our vehicles
will have larger areas to operate,”
Grab country head Brian Cu said
in a press conference in Quezon
City Tuesday.
“Spot incentive will be applied
for every kilometer exceeding 2
km. in booked trips. The extra 1
km. will be given as spot incen-
tive,” Cu said.
Grab will offer subsidies out
of its revenues and will not af-
fect the fare that will be paid by
riders.

“This will be placed as part
of the entire incentives program.
This is a new feature on the tech-
nology side. We want to ensure
that drivers will not be operating
on a loss. Our current profitabil-
ity is not the question here. The
question here is how we can im-
prove our services,” Cu said.
The operating costs of Grab
Philippines has increased to
P4.57 billion last year from
P2.45 billion in 2016 while its
net losses amounted to P2.92 bil-
lion in 2017 compared to P1.56
billion in 2016.
The increase in Grab’s operat-
ing costs was attributed to rev-
enues from the 20 percent com-
mission from rides that are being
used for driver incentives.
“We do not expect the situa-
tion to change in the next 12 to
18 months. We are still in invest-
ment mode and are not expecting
to make money anytime sooner.
But these losses are still within
our budget forecast,” Cu said.

MOST Filipinos are fond of bar-
beques and are always looking for
a place to savor the taste. In Gen-
eral Santos City, Angel’s Kama-
yan is the most visited place dur-
ing dinner time around 5:00PM
to 9:00PM. The establishment
was owned by the grandparents
of Cheribel Montero. It was then
passed on to the next generation,
including her.
Cheribel, 41, tried her luck in
branching out Angel’s Kamayan
in Mati City in 2011. Her four
siblings also decided to establish
the same business in different ar-
eas in Mindanao. They decided to
preserve the name of the establish-
ment in memory of their grand-
parents.
“Although Angel’s Kamayan is
established in different places, we
all agreed to put a tagline that says
“Gensan’s best-tasting barbeque”
in order to easily trace its origin
wherever it maybe. It’s an agree-
ment between us siblings,” Cheri-
bel explained.
As they start putting up Angel’s
Kamayan in a place where they
know no one, there were doubts
but they are thinking positively,
hoping and praying that life will
be a little better. Cheribel is a grad-
uate of accountancy and she chose
to put up her own business instead
of working in a corporate world.
In 2016, the neighbors of Cheri-
bel introduced CARD Bank, Inc.
to her. It is a bank that provides
microfinance loans, SME loans,
and other loans tailored-fit to the
evolving needs of its clients, es-
pecially the socio-economically
challenged women and families.
She immediately applied for a
Small Business Loan and was ap-
proved P15,000 in which she add-
ed as capital to start her planned
business expansion.

portunity to grow not only as a
businesswoman but also as a per-
son. I am thankful that this kind

tion of the Tax Reform for Accel-
eration and Inclusion (TRAIN)
