10th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Parishioners,
Today’s gospel reading contains one of
those lines I’ve always avoided because...
well, quite simply, I just never got it.
“All men’s sins will be forgiven, and all
their blasphemies; but let anyone
blaspheme against the Holy Spirit and he
will never have forgiveness” (Mk 3).
I’ve always thought, “Really?! So... lying,
stealing, addictions, violence, murder, etc –
all those things are forgivable; but if I say
something disrespectful about God, then
I’m condemned? That sounds a bit unfair!”
Obviously there must be something wrong
in my understanding (or lack of it), and so I
thought it’s about time that I do something
about it and did a little bit of research. I
was pleasantly surprised by the things I
discovered which proved to be quite eye-
opening. Did you know that in Catholic
teachings, one of the blasphemies against
the Holy Spirit is ‘despair’ ?? That is,
believing that one’s evil is beyond God’s
forgiveness, or thinking that I’ve done
something so, so terrible that God will/can
never forgive me.
In other words, it is believing that we are
unforgivable that makes us unable to have
forgiveness. God’s mercy is always
available, and it is great enough that he can
forgive the worst sins – Jesus says, “ALL
men’s (and women’s!) sins” and when He
says ‘all’, it means ALL. The ‘blasphemy’ is
in thinking that this is not true, that God is
not loving and forgiving and merciful
enough, that He is mean and spiteful and
vengeful instead and is out to punish us.
Have you ever
done something
at some point in
your life that you
just can’t forgive
yourself for? I
think many of us
have experienced that feeling of intense
remorse, regret, shame, guilt... it’s a terrible
feeling. Those of us who had been there
know what kind of ‘personal hell’ that can
be; how easy it is to fall into despair and
how difficult it is to believe that God still
loves and forgives us despite what we have
done or failed to do. In those moments,
quite often we react no differently than
Adam and Eve: we hide from God in fear,
we try to justify ourselves or shift the
blame to others... all because deep down,
we believe that God will stop loving us and
reject us once we are found ‘guilty’. We are
the ones who distance ourselves from God
by believing that his anger will be greater
than his love; where in fact, His love for us
does not change even when we are guilty!
I’m not suggesting that we can sin as much
as we can because God will love and forgive
us anyway, no! After all, sin still has its
consequences and God’s will is for us to live
as His children (i.e. loving Him and one
another). But I find great consolation in
today’s reading and a renewed trust in
God’s unconditional love for us.
“With the Lord there IS
mercy and fullness of
redemption”. Let us hold
on to this truth of our faith,
and never despair!

place it with the money in an envelope with
your child’s surname, and pass to Sr. Devy
or Germaine.
PLEASE PRAY FOR
THE REPOSE OF THE SOULS OF:
The late Joseph McManus (husband of
Theresa). His funeral will take place here on
Wednesday 13th June at 10am
followed by burial. May he rest in peace.
We will remember his family and friends
in our prayers.

FILIPINO FUND-RAISING DINNER and
DANCE
We thank the Filipino Community for
hosting their enjoyable Dinner/Dance!
They raised a total of £967 which they
generously donated to the Parish.
DECORATION VOLUNTEERS:
We have started the work to redecorate our
Parish Halls which are in need of some
attention. If you are able to give some hours
to this project, please put your name on the
list at the back of the church and lend us a
helping hand at a time that suits you.
Have a think - you don't have to be
Michelangelo to re-decorate!
