Dear Bob,
I have no way to express myself other than through a letter. I have all these feelings
bottled up and sometimes I question why I still have feelings. So much time has passed by, yet I
still get can the courage to tell you how much I love you. I love you so much and because of that
I hate you. I have no right to feel this way but something is dragging me on, and I’m not able to
let go. It makes me hate you even more that you're in love with another girl and that I will never
be that girl. I still have feelings but I know I don't stand a chance. No matter what time of the day
it is I miss you. Whether it being breakfast or an afternoon jog I cant get you out of my head. We
have so many memories that all trail back once I see certain objects in my house that remind me.
Whether that being the front seat of my car or a sweater that has sand in it from when we went to
the beach the thoughts can’t escape. Sometimes I wonder if you even miss me as much as I miss
you. I regret how I let you messed around with but you weren't just a friend. I never become tired
of you. The way you treated me was absolutely atrocious and I know if I ever acted the way you
act towards me you would end things right away.
Although I have the slightest feeling you are still in love with me. But no. no . no. You
have to keep that on a low. I’m so sure of it though. If you really did want me you’d say so. I’m
possibly the best thing thats ever happened to you and you lost me. I don't mean to accuse or
blame everything on you but I miss you. I know now that its for the better. It wasn't meant to be.
But while it lasted it was beautiful. All the lies taught me. They taught me that I had to let. I had
to burn a bridge to let you go. But what’s wrong with still having feelings. Why do I still have
feelings? My love and trust has vanished though after reminiscing every night. And I know now
that I hate you for being the way that you are. I hate that I still love you.
The only thing making me let go is that fact that you've let go. You've moved on. YOU
found another girl. And I hate to watch you with her. It pains me. It kill me. So this is why I
wanted to express these feelings to you through a letter. Whether you do something about it or
not I wanted to show you my side, what it feels like, how you treated me.

Analytical Essay

Love can be expressed in many unexpected forms and can be interested differently

depending on the genre. Whether that be a poem, text, song, or love letter each can be analyzed

differently. When a genre is translated in can change the texture, and feeling of how you read it.

The two genres that have been translated is a song to a love letter. I chose the song “i hate u, i

love u” by Gnash featuring Olivia O’Brein, and was translated to a love letter. The transition

between the two genres was smooth and I was able to fully incorporate the feeling the artist was

striving for when translating it to a love letter. Translating the genres I am able to incorporate the

article “How to Read Like a Writer” when writing my translation of the second genre. As well,

“Understanding Style” to help me understand how to write differently when translating between

a song and a love letter. In translating genres, it shows that each genre has their own style no

matter if they’re speaking of the same topic, as well as incorporating articles to prove the point of

differences.

Songs have many different meanings and backgrounds depending on the artist. In this

specific example “i hate u, i love you” is directed towards a specific person you have strong but

hatred feelings towards. There is no specific target audience for this song since it is meant to

speak to anyone feeling pain and also anyone who can relate to the lyrics which is a broad
audience. This tells me that songs as genres have a very broad audience. They are directed to a

specific person which makes them special because even if you cant relate to the song you can

still listen to it. The audience can range from teens to adults, no matter what the age is you can

feel a connection. Song lyrics can be very personal but not the song itself. Naturally songs will

become popular so they wont be as intimate and personal when listening although you may be

able to relate. The characteristics of a song are very similar to a poem. The lyrics do not have to

be full sentences or grammatically correct. The lyrics can rhyme and also repeat to emphasize.

When reading this song and deciding how to translate it I had to read like a writer. I referred back

to “Reading like a Writer” to assist me. In the article written by Mike Bunn it states, “The goal as

you read like a writer is to locate what you believe are the most important writerly choices

represented in the text.” This article helped me examine the song as a genre and read by

interpreting how I’ll translate it. A song is written to influence other and make you feel

ultimately not alone. Being the audience for a song is very broad and is not limited to a

community or single person. Since songs are written in a poetic format they are meant to ignite

more thoughts and not just state facts. That is why I decided to translate it to a song. Since it

ignited thoughts in me I was able to expand more on the song through a love letter.

A genre translation from a song to a love letter is generally simple. After reading the song

I read it like I was in the “persons shoes”. I felt their feelings even though I may not have been in

an exact situation like that. Transitioning between the two genres was challenging. In the love

letter I used techniques such as full sentences, questions, and statements that would help me

express the feeling that the artist was going for through a love letter. The new audience for the

love letter is one specific person. I was able to narrow the audience down by making the letter
very personal and assigning it to one person communicating to another. Love letter are very

personal and intimate. They are typically not shared with anyone else except for your significant

other and are more on the formal side. Unlike a song where they audience is very broad and open

to anyone, a love letter is very closed off. I chose this new genre because the song “i hate u, i

love u” speaks of a significant other and in writing a love letter that is the main factor. This

translation allowed me to express the feeling of the artist in a more personal way rather than just

through poetic writing. My goal in translating these song lyrics into love letter was to generate

more expression. Song lyrics tend to be very short and “to the point” because of the fact of how a

song is written. Conventions of a song, such as a poetic rhythm and hidden meaning tend to cut

the songs short of their real meaning. From translating this to a love letter it allowed me to grasp

every aspect of the song that wasn't grasped before. I was able to achieve the full meaning of the

song with love letter conventions. I used the article “Understanding Style” to help articulate my

tradition smoother. In the article it states, “Essentially style resembles good manners. It comes of

endeavoring to understand others, of thinking fro then rather than yourself—or thinking, that is,

with the heart as well as the head.” Understanding style helps you articulate your genre better.

Love letter are very similar to songs about love except they are written specifically to one

person. There is no limit to a love letter since they are very personal. When integrating

information from the song to the letter I made sure to still keep the feelings the artist was

conveying. Some challenges I faced when transitioning was making sure of incorporating every

detail in the song. Considering how songs are typically written in a poem like form, most of the

time have to tear them apart to see the real meaning. With this song I had to make sure to grasp

every aspect of the song without changing it. The conventions of a song and a love letter are very
different and unique. But in a way these two genres relate in the sense that they both talk about

love, both express feelings, and are both directed towards significant other.

In conclusion, transitioning between a song to a love letter was smooth. Something I

learned when reading my old topic and transitioning to the new one was still incorporating the

same atmosphere and keep the feelings. Although it is hard to grasp every aspect when

transitioning between genres it taught me the differences in each genre. Some concern I kept in

mind wayside tracking and writing statements that were not motioned in the song. I had to

reference the song many to times and read it over and over agin to make sure I was

understanding the full meaning and story. I overcame many challenges such as the realization of

how genres all have different characteristics. Each genre is different in their own ways and in

order to transition smoothly you will need to understand the genre fully. A song can express

many feeling but you also have to decipher how to interpret the song. Through a love letter the

points are very specific and straightforward. Writing this paper changed the way I think about

different types of genres. Each genre has a different purpose even if they may have many

similarities. In this translation between and song and a love letter, there are may similarities.

Looking at the big picture, they both talk about “love” which is a key point that made the

translation simple. As well as the fact that there were many feelings expressed in the song

through a poetic form, so I simply just had to turn these into complete sentences. The main

aspect I took away from this translation that many genres can have similarities but the audience

is a main aspect that makes a genre what it is, from going from broad to narrow. All in all, songs

and love letter resemble in many ways and convey the same messages in many forms.
