Triangles
Meaning :
A right triangle (American English) or right-angled
triangle (British English) is a triangle in which one angle is
a right angle (that is, a 90-degree angle). The relation
between the sides and angles of a right triangle is the
basis for trigonometry.
The side opposite the right angle is called
the hypotenuse (side c in the figure). The sides adjacent to
the right angle are called legs (or catheti,
singular: cathetus). Side a may be identified as the
side adjacent to angle B and opposed
to (or opposite) angle A, while side b is the side adjacent
to angle A and opposed to angle B.

Pythagorean theorem = The Pythagorean theorem states that: In any,

right triangle the area of the square whose side is the hypotenuse (the side
opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares
whose sides are the two legs (the two sides that meet at a right angle).

Example # 1

x
6

a2 + b 2 = c

(6)2 + (8)2 = (x)2

36 + 64 = x2

√100 = √x2

10 = x

Example # 2

A carpet measures 7 feet long and has a diagonal

measurement of √174 feet. Find the width of the carpet.

w2 + 72 = (√74)2
√174 f
7ft w2 + 49 = 74
-49 -49
√w2 = √25
w=5 w=5

Example # 3

Find the length of side t in the triangle on the left.

13
t

12

t2 + 12 = 132

t2 +144 =169

t2 +169 - 144 = 25

√t2 = √25 = 5
Summary:

One of the best known mathematical

formulas is Pythagorean Theorem,
which provides us with the
relationship between the sides in a
right triangle . A right triangle
consists of two legs and a hypotenuse .
The two legs meet at a 90° angle and
the hypotenuse is the longest side of
the right triangle and is the side opposite the
right angle .
