ABSTRACT
We retrieve Bakhtin’s reflections on Forms of Time and the Chronotope in the Novel
present in The Dialogic Imagination: Four Essays by M. M. Bakhtin in order to verify
the variations of the ‘Ancient Biography and Autobiography Chronotope’ in
contemporary autobiography novel. We thus analyze the chronotope in the autobiography
novels A Moveable Feast, by Ernest Hemingway, and Chá das cinco com o vampire
[Afternoon Tea with the Vampire], by the Brazilian writer Miguel Sanches Neto. Our
reading of Bakhtin’s notion of chronotope in these narratives leads us to relate the form
of public and private space configuration with different strategies of representation.

e autobiografias antigas’ no romance autobiográfico contemporâneo.
Nossa leitura do

“Written between 1957 and 1960, A Moveable Feast was only published three years after Hemingway’s
death. It is one of the seven works of 'non-fiction' written by the author. Although posthumous, this work
talks about the period (1921-1926) when Hemingway lived in Paris” (MARTINS, 2012, no page). Text in

[…] what is found is the search to recognize, at the level of the plot and
the fictional elements represented in fiction situations, absence or
presence and the scale of human transformation, which is taken as an
index of historicity (BRANDÃO, 2013, p.95).7
Thus, the historicity of chronotope is “on the plane of the ‘content’ of works”
(BRANDÃO, 2013, p.95).8 It is Bakhtin’s search for human transformations that allows
us to see, in the creation and transformation of public and private spaces, the demand for
different strategies of representation in the (auto)biographical novel chronotope.

3) The biographical time, is “quite realistic, [because] [a]ll of its moments are
included in the total life process”; the biographical novel “works with extended periods,”
and “[a]rranged against the background of this basic time in the biographical novel is, of
course, the depiction of individual events and adventures on a large plane” (BAKHTIN,
1986, p.18).38
Anticipating the understanding of contemporary historians such as François
Dosse,39 Bakhtin points out that biographical time incorporates a little of historical time:
In the narrative A Moveable Feast, in order to relive some years of his life, Ernest
Hemingway also ends up weaving the scene of a generation called Lost Generation by
Gertrude Stein: a generation composed of artists who sought a space to create their art in
the interwar Paris. In the novel Chá das cinco com o vampiro [Afternoon Tea with the
Vampire] the word generation gets a plural sense in this narrative, focused on the conflict
between a master and his pupil. It shows a clash of generations starting from these two
characters.
4) For Bakhtin this prevalence of what we might call the historical spirit of a
generation makes the biographical novel “no longer the background for the hero […]
Secondary characters, countries, cities, things, and so on enter into biographical novel in

The relationship between the world as source of representation and the represented
world – to use the terminology employed by Bakhtin – transcends the sphere of
(auto)biographical novel and concerns the very meaning of artistic creation. Bakhtin
explains that “[h]owever forcefully the real and the represented world resist fusion,
however immutable the presence of that categorical boundary line between them, they
are […] in continual mutual interaction” (1981, p.254).48 This distinction is essential to
Bakhtin, who establishes the concept of “author-creator,” by means of which we can think
about the relationship between man and work in autobiographical novels, avoiding the
primary mistake of understanding the “author-creator” as a synonym for “author as a
human being.” This goes with what Bakhtin calls naive biographism. “We find the author
outside the work as a human being living his own biographical life. But we also meet him
as the creator of the work itself” (1981, p.254; emphasis in original).49
The difference between the chronotope of the “author as a human being” and the
chronotope of the “author-creator” and the difference between the actual and the
represented world is part of the discussion on the paradigm of realistic representation. It
has been under discussion since Aristotle’s Poetics, a work in which the Greek thinker
considered that pure imitation is impossible, for one cannot even determine the
individual’s unity. Therefore, here we are only interested in discussing the formation of
chronotope within the literary aesthetic object, more specifically in the autobiographical
novels A Moveable Feast and Chá das cinco com o vampire [Afternoon Tea with the
Vampire].

Conclusion
We have seen how the chronotope of the (auto)biographical novel is the basis for
the development of all kinds of narrative, which can be combined with other classic
chronotopes. These narratives can acquire the features of roman à clef if the characters
are portrayed in an ironic way and are inspired by people known to the reading public, of
Bildungsroman if they show the process of formation of the main character, and of
Künstlerroman if they portray the process of formation of a man as an artist.
In the genesis of the definition of what is an (auto)biographical novel is the
discussion concerning the difference between reality and fiction. It dates back to Aristotle
and is still fundamental for us to think about this particular chronotope. Bakhtin helps us
reflect on this issue when he shows that, in order to produce a literary work, the ‘author
as a human being’ automatically becomes part of another sphere, along with his other
self, who lives in the literary aesthetic object: the ‘author-creator.’ Even though the name
on the cover of a book refers ultimately to a man of flesh and blood, the critic’s only
concern is the analysis of the aesthetic object. Thus, in this aesthetic object (literary, in

In this paper, I analyze the narrative of the novel Never Any End to Paris (2003), by
Enrique Vila-Matas, to observe how the Catalan author resort to a particular canon to
create a narrative that is, at the same time, autobiographical and metaficcional. While
the protagonist revisit your own career, the begging in the 1970s Paris, and the
influence of Marguerite Duras in his early years as an author, he also revisits the early
years of the trajectory of the writer Ernest Hemingway, passed in the Paris of the 1920s,
which served as inspiration for the most autobiographical of the American author’s
novels. In this way, the autobiographical merges with the metafictional in this Vila-
Matas’ novel.
The Paris of the 1920s had already been the set of other Vila-Matas’ narrative: A Brief
History of Portable Literature (1985), novel that made the Catalan writer known in
Latin America. In this book, personalities who lived in that period as Marcel Duchamp
and Aleister Crowley become characters in this novel which require an implied reader
with a high level of intersexual competence. In an interview, Vila-Matas already
recognized that intertextuality is, for him, “a machine of narration” (VILA-MATAS in
FREITAS, 2011, without number page). The intertextuality that arises from the
exploration of a particular canon makes Vila-Matas literature a kind of autobiographical
metafiction1 that revisits the history of literature, which also includes the history of the
writers’ life.
In Never Any End to Paris, going back and forth in time and space, the self-digetic
narrator leads us to Barcelona from his childhood to the years of learning in Paris during
the 1970s to the present tense of the enunciation, when he is already a recognized writer
who accepts an invitation to lecture on the theme of irony in Contemporary Barcelona.
When it comes to the Paris literary scene of the 1970s, the narrator recalls the figures
that gravitated around the avant-garde magazine Tel Quel, published between 1960 and
1982. Interceded with this primary account, the narrator also takes us to Paris in the
1920s, in which Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, James Joyce and
other writers who populated the Western literary canon lived.
The autobiographical frame of the story appears still in the beginning of the novel,
when, in a return to Paris, already in the 2000s, the narrator says he is “dedicated to
taking notes for an ironic review of the years of my youth I spent in this city and in
which, unlike Hemingway, who was ‘very poor and very happy there’, I was very poor
and very unhappy” (VILA-MATAS, 2007, p. 8).
1
The name is inspired in the concept of “historiographical metafiction”, proposed by Canadian literary
theorist Linda Hutcheon in the late 1980s.
careers as writers. Rescuing not only his personal history, but also referring to
Hemingway’s work, Vila-Matas gives life to what Umberto Eco (2003, p. 199-218)
defines as “intertextual irony”, that is, direct quotations from others famous texts or
reference to them more or less transparent.
Some facts narrated in Paris have no end are well known, as the suicide of Jeanne
Hebuterne, the wife of the painter Modigliani, who, then pregnant, threw herself from a
balcony. Others make reference to episodes narrated in the autobiographical book of
Hemingway, like the passage in which the narrator writes: “I went to Paris this August
and, as I passed my wife along the corner of Rue Jacob with Saint-Pères came to my
mind the celebrated episode in which Hemingway, in the restroom of the restaurant
Michaud, approves the size of Scott Fitzgerald’s dick (VILAMATAS, 2007: 13)”.
The blurring between what is factual and what is imagined in a Vila-Matas novel also
allows us to read it as an autofiction. If merge his personal history with quotations from
well-known authors and events, as well as excerpts from other books, Vila-Matas
creates a kind of “literary mythomania”, in which the author inserts himself in the
western literary tradition when he places himself next to those who are part of that
tradition. We take the term autoficion from the definition given by Vicent Colonna, who
in his book Autofiction & autres mythomanies littéraires (2004) considers that the use
of neologism autofiction should be restricted to the case of authors who invent a
personality and a literary existence.
A novel like Never Any End to Paris, in which autobiographical fiction in traditional
ways, as we see in Hemingway’s novel, is deconstructed, provokes the discussion about
the figure of the author, once understood as a creative genius and now assumed as a
necrophile who wants to make love with dead writers2. The way that the creative author
Vila-Matas finds to provoke this questioning is through the ironic exploitation of the
literary tradition, of the dialogue with other literary texts, creating a metaliterature that
feeds intertextually from a particular canon.
2
The idea of literary necrophilia can be seen in Lars Iyer’s article “Nude in your hot tub, facing the abyss
(a literary manifesto after the end of literature and manifestos)”, November, 2011.

Assim, a

descrever o projeto literário do escritor. Como destacou Rita Bittencourt, Vila-Matas,
sistematicamente,

Augusto Roa Bastos” (MENTON, 1993, p. 42).

problematização substitui a demolição” (HUTCHEON, 1991, p. 15).
vanguardas europeias ainda no inicio do século XX.

A última quimera (1995), outro livro
(XERXENESKY in BERNARDO, 2012, p. 43).
Bernardo (2012):
1. Autor, narrador e protagonista têm o mesmo nome (coincidência onomástica);
romance;

A piscadela culta
do autor.

Abstract
By creating narratives that takes the reader through a dizzying network of references, the
Spanish writer Enrique Vila-Matas transformed his prose in a tribute to literature. In this
paper we aim at showing how a particular canon feeds the Vila-Matas’ autobiographical work,
as a kind of metaliterature. For this purpose we will analyze the autobiographical novel Never
Any End to Paris (2003), where the main character is – like Vila-Matas – a renowned Catalan
writer who prepares for a conference, while remembering the years that he lived in Paris in
the 1970s. In this book, there is a number references made to the American writer Ernest
Hemingway and his own autobiographical novel A Moveable Feast (1964). Vila-
Matas revisits Hemingway's novel to subvert it and confuse the story of the American author
with that of his own alter ego. By doing so, the narrative of Never Any End to Paris leads us
to a brief consideration on autobiographies and related themes, like New Historical
Novels, Historiographic Metafiction and Autofiction, contemporary terminologies centered on
the relationships between life and fiction.
Keywords
Autobiographical Novel. Autofiction. Historiographic Metafiction.
The relation between these two founding instances of the aesthetic act is based on a
continuous flow of exchange of values, since in the artistic act the lived reality (already
crossed by different social values because life occurs in a complex axiological broth) is
transposed to another axiological plane (the plan of the work), giving rise to the
aesthetic act that operates on existing systems of values to create new value systems.
It is also unbelievable that the author’s identity in the contemporary world should pass
through his mediatic image. Phillipe Lejeune, in Le pacte autobiographique (1975), has
already noted that many readers recognize the author by their image even without
having contact with a work. Concerning the formation of the author’s identity, we also
resort to Pierre Bourdieu’s reflections exposed in the article “The biographical illusion”
from 1986, in which he reads the proper name as the support of social identity.
The two novels analyzed in this paper question the ways of construction of the author’s
identity by staging in the narrative structure itself the a border that separates truth and
fiction. While in Coetzee’s novel the author’s life can only be rescued through
testimonials of other people, since the author is fictionally “dead”, in Vila-Matas’ novel
we accompany the writer Andres Pasavento in his quest for disappearance, even if it is
at the expense of the usurpation of other identities.
At first glance, the structures of these novels are approximated by their labyrinthine
trajectory, which leaves no certainty to the reader, only exposes the unceasing exercise
that is trying to account for the construction of the identity of these authors-characters.
In Doctor Pasavento, the autor-creator Enrique Vila-Matas becomes Doctor Pasavento,
who, in turn, metamorphoses into Doctor Ingravallo and Doctor Pinchon, until all these
voices become more and more confused. The fictional John M. Coetzee will be
transformed into several other Coetzees in each of the voices that make up into the
narrative.
Whilst Vila-Matas’ book adopts an essay line (the reference to Montaigne is one of the
clues left by the author-creator in the text), Coetzee’s narrative made an appropriation of
the testimony and the diary to create a discourse where many voices (Vincent, Julia,
Margot, Adriana, Martin and Sophie) enact the possibility of choosing different
episodes of life and adopt several narrative focuses to build an identity of the same
character: the “dead” John Coetzee. The collage of interviews, as well as the quotation
of excerpts from the diary written by the "dead" author, refers to the usual sources that a
biographer uses. The main purpose of this narrative is to show not only the investigative
process, but also the subjective one, evident in the choices made by the fictional
biographer Vincent.
The protagonist of the novel of Vila-Matas is the writer Andrés Pasavento, who invited
to speak at a literary meeting in Seville, decides to disappear. The guide of this search of
the Pasavento by the disappearance is the Swiss writer Robert Walser. Throughout the
novel, metaliterary evocations (Salinger, Pynchon, Walser) will add to the fictional
characters, such as Doctor Ingravallo which is an unfolding of the identity of Pasavento
– and Dr. Pinchon, for to discuss not only the issue of disappearance, but also
loneliness, fame, and death as literary issues.
The essayistic aspect of the text also allows the narrator to reflect literature itself,
addressing issues such as originality, the literary tradition about the contemporary
writer, the desire for recognition with critics and the public, and the need for solitude as
part of the creative process of the writer. Following one of the tracks left by Vila-Matas,
we can approach his literary deglutinate project of Montaigne’s Essays, in which the
French thinker used self-description to investigate the ambiguity of his myself.
To Vila-Matas, the most radical possibility of the disappearance of the author is suicide,
a theme discussed in Doctor Pasavento through figure of Robert Walser, who was found
dead in the snow after leaving the asylum where he resided. Ironically, Coetzee’s novel
shows that even after his death, the author remains alive not only through his work, but
through the remembrance of those who lived with him. In Vila-Matas’s work the idea of
suicide is never a sign of defeat; is just another possibility of disappearance.
The presence of the vacuum, of that which exists only in the absence, is metaphorized
through death in the two narratives. In the novel-essay of Vila-Matas, the sign of the
death of the author accompanies the aesthetic and existential search of the protagonist,
signaling that the author’s identity is based on the choice of the theme of absence as an
essential component of his literary project. In Coetzee’s narrative, the fictionally dead
author gains new life and identity through the fiction of others – the characters’
testimonials and the biographer’s clippings. It is in the choices of author-creator
Coetzee that we glimpse an identity of self-ironic author.
Finally, the analysis shows how, from different approaches, the novels Summertime and
Doctor Pasavento expose the difficulty of containing the subject in a narrative based on
the artificial linearity of a life trajectory. A combination of different narrative focuses
reveals this impossibility in Coetzee’s novel, while in the Vila-Matas novel the narrator
deliberately refuses to assume a single identity, initiating a dizzying journey that passes
through the appropriation of other identities (mainly writers Robert Walser and Thomas
Pynchon), by invention and dissimulation.
A CONSTRUÇÃO DA IDENTIDADE DOAUTOR
EM J. M. COETZEE E ENRIQUE VILA-MATAS
Pauliane AMARAL *
independentes, a partir das quais a senhora pode então tentar sintetizar um todo;

voz do “falecido” Coetzee é ele quem deve preencher as lacunas e tentar ligar a
Bourdieu (2006, p. 185, grifo nosso)diz:
