House of Representatives
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600

Wednesday, June 26, 2008

Dear Hon Stephen Smith MP,

I write to you in your capacity as Minister for Foreign Affairs. I am

U Tin Tut, elected National League for Democracy (NLD) member
of the Pyithu Hluttaw, People's Assembly of Burma.

I write to you today, on the International Day to Support Victims

of Torture to urge you to take action on the torture of prisoners
and a real political solution in Burma in the face of Cyclone
Nargis.

Firstly, the Australian Government can help the people of Burma

by urgently seeking health reports from independent doctors
regarding those individuals (over 20) arrested for delivering
humanitarian assistance to survivors of Cyclone Nargis. I would
like to also request that the Australian Government seek
meetings with these political prisoners. My colleagues and I have
grave concerns that these individuals may be subject to torture.

We know from our contacts in Burma that the regime's leadership

knows it has "lost face" in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis - both
at home and abroad. The regime will therefore treat these
prisoners particularly harshly. We must ensure that there are no
more victims of torture.

Secondly, the Australian Government can help the people of

Burma by declaring its support for the elected Members of
Parliament, and join the NLD Central Executive Committee call on
16 June for a real political solution.

A real political solution is desperately needed in the afternath of

Cyclone Nargis. This solution can be achieved by elected
Members immediately forming the People’s Assembly, in

accordance with Burmese law.

The people in Australia are appalled by the regime's absolute

disregard for the people of Burma. They were dismayed at the
Saffron Revolution and cannot believe the response to Cyclone
Nargis.

From one Member of Parliament to another I write to you to

humbly request you to do these two things. Not only do they put
pressure on the military regime for change, but they will make a
real difference to the people of Burma. The people of Australia
will be proud of such action by their Government.

The world is clear that the real crisis in Burma is the military
regime. It is a disaster that the International Day to Support
Victims of Torture is so symbolic to Burma, where nearly 2,000
political prisoners languish in jail. Burma needs change now.

Yours Sincerely,

U Tin Tut

MP-elect, National League for Democracy
