2. Compare your answers with others in the class and try to decide if the
substances in the ‘not sure’ column are mixtures or pure substances.
3. Write down the components for three of the substances you identified as
mixtures.

1.Salt water: water, salt

Separating a mixture of beans, rice and flour

1. Aim (What do I want to know?)

To separate every component in the mixture.

2. Equipment

Sieve
2 bowls
spoon

3. Procedure (What I am going to do? Identify the separation techniques where

appropriate in your steps)

1.mix the ingredients together in a bowl

2.put the second bowl under the sieve and pour the mixture through the sieve
3. now you will have the residue on the top which will be the beans.

4. Results (Observations)

1. Not all the mixture was sieved properly

2. the sieving technique was a little messy
3. the flour was getting stuck coating the beans and rice and wasn’t fully sieved

4. the experiment was successful, but we could improve some strategies.

5. Conclusion (How well did my separation work?)

I think my separation technique worked well and I managed to separate almost all
the
mixture.

6. Reflection (How I could change the separation to make it better? Consider which
techniques worked well and which didn’t)

I used a sieve to separate my mixture, a problem I encountered whilst conducting

this experiment was the mixture was stuck in the sieve. To fix this problem maybe
next time I could use another
technique.
