Lesson Plan
Grade: Kindergarten
Scientists
QT: What does a scientist look and act like?
Language Objective- Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose
informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some
information about the topic.
SIOP:
-Building Background- I would show the children some scientists histories and what they did to
change their lives now.
-Strategies- Using various ways to teach:
 Verbal-tell them who the scientists are and giving a small background
 Kinesthetic: Having the children get up and search for what the scientists have done that
affect the classroom.
-Practice & Application- Help the students practice how to research and learn on their own.
-Lesson Delivery- I will work to help teach the children in different ways using different
strategies.
Writing Traits:
 Ideas- Have the children come up with their own ideas and alter them as they learn more
about what a scientist is.
 Organization- Have the children use charts to show who is affected by different types of
inventions.
Differentiated Instruction: As I am teaching I will have the children explore about “What does
a scientist look like?” They can read books, dress up how a scientist, learn about different
inventions from two scientists. The children that have different disabilities I can accommodate for
by helping them to pick a topic and research it in a way that they can successfully do while
stretching themselves.
Science Standards: ----
Technology Standards: Have the children:
 Use a recording device, with support, to record their opinions.
 Research websites for information.
 Create 2 slide Power Point to present what they have learned.
Science Skills: Organization, Discovery, Inquiry
Engagement:
Setting up the Classroom: Group tables- Place papers and drawing tools on table. Have the
projector going through pictures of scientist’s areas (doc. office, dentist office, lab with beakers
and experiments going on, ect.) Play soft back-ground music that would bring a science feel to the
room. (google it)
Ask the students the question “What does a scientist looks like?” have them start drawing a picture
about what they think they look like. Take one student aside at a time and record what they think
a scientist does and looks like.
The teacher will then talk to the students about how there are many scientists in the world that do
many different things. They all have a place in the world that can change the world!
Exploration: After they finish drawing and we all compare our drawings creating a word web on
the white board.
Then the teacher will place boxes of supplies on the tables to dress up someone as scientist. (Place
safety goggles, lab coats, magnifying glasses, beakers, tubes, pipets and other tools). Have the
students set up their table with the materials they have to be a scientific area and
dress up each other as scientists.
Have the children search through some websites to add to their ideas about what
a scientist looks like. The children can search these websites:

kids.html
FOLLOW-UP DAYS
Explanation: The teacher will present 2 different scientists and 1-2 inventions that effect the
children in the classroom today. (Thomas Edison and Maria Mitchell) The teacher need to explain
to the children that many people are scientists. They are all different and they do different things.
We can be scientists too!
The children can ask questions about these scientists. They will build more on their knowledge of
what a scientist is, does and looks like. They can alter their own hypothesis.

Elaboration: Have the students get out their first drawing of their scientist adding to it what they
now believe and know about a scientist.
Teacher- explain to the students that they can pick one topic to do deeper research in to learn how
a scientist invented it or how we got the product. Present the topics.
Possibilities of Research:
1. How did Thomas Edison invent the light bulb? What else did he invent?
Watch this video: https://youtu.be/b1lKwZTtzIY
Read the book: Timeless Thomas by: Gene Barreta
2. How is ice cream made?
Watch this video: https://youtu.be/K-7s7WrTX7k
Read the book: Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop by: Margaret & H. A. Reys
3. How did why was Maria Mitchell the first famous scientist?
Watch this video: https://youtu.be/l7VUQYTkLVY
Read the book: Comets, Stars, the Moon and Mars by: Douglas Florian
4. How are spaghetti noodles made?
Watch this video: https://youtu.be/uBVj1RKcrM4
Read the book: Oodles of Noodles by: Diana Hendry
Have the students research, by watching the videos provided, about one subject of their choosing
from the 4.
Teacher explain to the children that they will be creating a power point to present what they have
learned to the class.
PRESENT: (students)
To present what they have learned the children will create their own 2 slide Power Point (title page,
and 1 content page). They may express what they have learned in whatever form. (Pictures, Text)
Evaluation: Using a “Check Chart,” Ask the students tell me what they are looking for.
Yes or No questions.
Questions Yes or No
1) Can anyone be a scientist?
2) Is your world affected by scientists?
How?
3) Did you do your Power Point
presentation?
The children will then present their power point slides in class telling the others what they have
learned about what a scientist does and come to the conclusion of “What a scientist looks like.”
