8. Why do you or do you not assign homework on weekends and over school vacations?
Count Response
1 Students need a break from schoolwork and need time to enjoy family.
1 To complete a project.
Count Response
1 I normally give the kiddos time in class to complete the reinforcement assignment (homework) so they don't have homework
over the weekend or vacation.
1 I do not assign homework on weekends or over school vacation because I believe that time should be spent with family or on
extra-curricular activities.
1 Weekend homework is only a reminder to study for a test the following week. A few times a year weekends are available for
long-term projects. I do not assign work (other than to read) over breaks since it is a break from school.
1 We assign projects that correlate to our social studies units which require family time...i.e., timeline, family tree, etc. During
week long vacations. No homework on weekends and days off from school. Regular days dont require hw bc everyone needs
a b re ak...hw on longer vacations makes sense bc it helps ease the transition
1 I do not usually because I feel homework should reinforce the day's lessons, objectives and skills. I'm not providing direct
instruction during vacations or on the weekends. I think for homework to be a good tool, there needs to be quick feedback and
assessment before moving on. I also think the students need down time, family time and time to learn on their own. Weekends
and vacations aren't meant to be loaded with school work. I encourage them to read daily.
1 I do not assign homework over the weekends or school vacations because I feel it is important for children to do things with
their family and have other experiences. Homework is given to check for understanding and I am not with the students over the
weekend to monitor their work.
1 Weekends are for family time. So many families suffer from broken homes, busy schedules, Zero time to spend bonding as a
family that I feel the weekends are strictly reserved for this purpose

1 I assign homework to reinforce skills taught in class and give an opportunity for extra practice.
1 Practice
1 See above
1 To make sure kids continue to practice what hey are taught in class.
1 To prepare for first grade, practice routines and support daily instruction
1 I assign homework to check for understanding. I use it as a guide to see who understood the material and who did not. I also
check to see if the students were able to do the homework on their own or if they had assistance from their parents.
1 Homework shows parents what skills a child is learning at school. It also helps begin a habit of time management and
commitments at an early age. Some students require additional practice outside of the regular school day.
1 It is important to practice skills that we cover in class as well as review previously taught information.
1 I am required to assign homework by the directive of my principal. Personally I do not believe in assigning homework due to the
over scheduled nature of most school Agro children.
1 I assign homework to go along with school policy, to practice skills, and to check my students' understanding of the day's
lesson.
1 I think it provides good practice of skills and helps the learner become proficient with the material. It allows me to see if the
student is able to apply concepts, skills and strategies independently to a certain degree.
1 Reinforcement of skills, particularly math. I do not assign any other homework except for nightly reading.

12. Why do you or do you not find homework to be an effective tool for reaching the academic goals of the
students?
Count Response
1 Reinforce what was taught. Let parents know what was taught.
1 Students in my class benefit from repeated practice of a skill to help with mastery.
1 mastery of skill

1 I find homework to be an effective tool for reaching the academic goals because is reassures me if students understand the
material and whether or not I did a good job teaching the material or if I need to review the information again.
1 When used well, I believe homework provides me with information that can be used to enhance my teaching and differentiate
the material to meet my students' needs .
1 I believe a quick review and practice for homework is important. It should not take longer than 10-15 to complete.
1 It provides extra practice and allows parents to reinforce skills. It also gives me a 2nd opportunity to recognize difficulties a
student might be having that I may not have recognized in class.
1 I find it to be effective because it gives me a chance to see how the kids do outside of classroom environment.
Count Response
1 Sometimes parents help too much and you wonder if the student is really getting something out of it. I also have students who
have zero parental support and I worry that they will practice their mistakes.
1 The student who "got it" the first time doesn't need busy work. The student who did not "get it" won't learn it at home unless
there is someone at home who can re teach it to him.
1 I do for most students...some need repeated instruction & parents need to be aware of what is taught in school...some are so
far ahead that the hw isn't relevant. Too difficult to differentiate properly

17. What strategies do you find effective getting students to do their homework?
Count Response
1 If student does not complete homework I help them with it during recess.
2 rewards
1 Strategies to get students to do their homework are using sticker charts, classroom "scoops", which can lead to a pajamas day
or a game day. By doing so it motivates the children to complete their homework.
1 Our k hw is optional so we cant push any child to complete the assignments if their parents don't want them to
1 We check it everyday. I don't have too many issues with homework because it's first grade. However, if they miss 3 home
works, they must do it at recess. This is a good deterrent.
1 Having them do it at recess. Signing agenda mate at the end of each day and having parents do the same.

1 Homework is corrected and returned. If a student has a large portion incorrect, the lesson is retaught to that child.
1 I check hw for mistakes and students must stay in for recess to do homework corrections and support.
Count Response
1 I check it individually. With them. If more than 3 get the same question wrong, I go over the concept with the class again.
1 Feedback is shared with children individually if a few did not understand the topic. If more than 5 or 6 students had difficulty with
the topic I will do a mini lesson and review the material with the whole class.
1 Students receive homework back to keep that is correct. Mistakes need to be corrected so paper goes in their work folder.
1 I grade homework upon completion. We review the correct answers as a class and review difficult problems.
