Asalamo Alaikum, kia Ora! Yasir, your last story was
about how you have been working theories for making sense of the social, physical and material worlds around you. Yasir we have been consistently encouraged to talk at “Mat time.” Teachers are asking you open ended questions that provided an environment for you to foster you as a keen learner, being a thinker, problem solver. We have been supporting you to manage yourself, relating to others and confidence in participating in challenges, like tying our shoe laces. Yasir today when we asked the children to draw a picture for the table mats, as a part of our project; you showed your interest and sat next to your friend Ayaan and drew a picture. I noticed you and Ayaan were exchanging your views and were suggesting ideas about what to draw on the paper. When you finished I asked you and Ayaan not to forget to write your name on the picture. You told me that Ayaan wrote his name and you don’t know how to write your name.
I asked you if you could see your name written somewhere.
You looked around and quickly went to the board and showed me your printed name with your picture. You put your picture on the table and said Ayaan will help me to write my name. I noticed you were following Ayaan’s instruction and was repeating after him at the same time looking at your printed name and moving your pencil to write each letter. When you completed your name you were very proud and held it up to show everyone. Ka pai to mahi Yasir (good job Yasir), for writing your name.
Observation shows you further developing strategies for active
exploration, thinking, problem solving and reasoning/ te hiiraurau hopaanga. Yasir, you will be five soon, and it has clearly reflected in your play and writing skills.
