Brief
In my advertising campaign, I want to discuss and shine a light on issues that
face young LGBT people today. Such as sexual health & relationships,
coming out and mental health, dangerous behaviours or dealing with
ignorance and hate etc. Young people are the most vulnerable when it
comes to these issues, they could start substance abuse or get into an
unhealthy relationship. I will create seven different posters for the topics I
discussed in my research and also create two campaign videos that will
expand on one topic. These issues I hope to focus on in my campaign are:

 Dangerous Behaviours
 Dealing with Ignorance and Hate
 Coming Out
 Mental Health

 Family and Friends

 Toxic Relationships
 Sexual Health

I want to use both genders in my production all in the age range of my target
audience, this is so as many people as can be can relate to my posters or
visuals productions. I want to shoot in the photography studio as I can get
better quality stills for my campaign posters so they look more professional. I
will construct my campaign posters physically, using my own images and
background images. I wanted to use this method of creating my posters as
the design and aesthetic has been inspired by contemporary and pop art
artists such as Barbra Kruger and Andy Warhol. I will edit the colours/tone of
the photos on Photoshop, I will also use Photoshop for the background
images and the quotes on the red, black and white backs. The colour of the
margins and text will be red, black or white; the background photos will stay
a sepia or greyscale tone. So that the graphic symbols and images that will
have a variety of bright colours will stand out against the background.

Target audience
My campaign advert main focused on young LGBT person or any young
person experiencing issues with identity or sexuality. Mainly towards 13-24
year olds, as this age group nowadays are more likely to be questioning their
sexuality or identity. I want my campaign to let anyone who is having these
thoughts that they are not unnatural and remind others to treat these people
respect and compassion. The design and colour tones of my campaign
posters will catch my audience’s eye, and the style of Barbara Kruger and
other pop artists like Andy Warhol that I will incorporate into my posters and
adverts.

rules
Vibe productions would like you to produce a final project which can be
showcased in next year’s exhibition and as a promotional tool for the course
and college. Your project will also determine your grade for the 90 credit
diploma and your entrance into year 2. Whilst you can create a production
of your choice there are a few rules which you must follow
Rules

 All criteria must be met (outlines in the following pages) for you to pass
 You will work on the re-submissions after each section and NOT at the
end. As soon as a section is completed, there will be no going back to
it.
 Although all teachers are guiding you, you must always go to your
‘marking teacher’ for grades and written feedback (all teachers can
guide and feedback verbally during lessons however)
 For you to gain the highest grade possible you will be required to work
outside your 11 lessons and be in on Wednesdays
 Resubmissions for each section may be done on Wednesdays so you
will be required to attend in order to pass / improve
 Group work is permitted but no more than 4 (with extra rules for groups)
 A deadline is a deadline you are marked on your professionalism so
late submissions will go against your grade
 You will sign ‘hand in’ forms so we can track who has kept to each
deadline
 You will be required to sign a letter of authenticity (to state all work is
your own)

Harry Durkan
5

 There can be no extensions as this work is submitted to the exam board

and if it is not there on deadline day they will fail it
 If you are filming off campus, the marking teacher must approve
BEFORE you are allowed to go and the filming days must match your
production schedule.
 Actors must be part of the course or have signed a declaration to say
they will be at the filming location. ‘no show actors’ will not be allowed
as an excuse

Mock Ups
Mock up 1

Here is a mock-up of one of my

campaign posters, this particular poster
is in reference to unhealthy relationships.
It is a very basic idea of what I want the
final production to look. I will be using a
smaller range of colours like black, white
and red. The quote will be in bold large
writing and with the photo in a square
frame to the left. In the sides of the main
photo I will add additional information on the posters subject matter, e.g. I will
add information on abusive relationships and organisations that can offer
help.
Mock up 2

This is a mock for one of my campaign posters, the

subject matter is coming out. In the main image I
want to use image editing to make her stand out
with a LGBT pride rainbow overlaid on her,
surroundings by darker background to make her
stand out further. I wanted this poster to be portrait
as it is more focused on her and her being LGBT. The
quote will in bold large text to make it stand out to
viewers, keeping the quote short makes it easier to
be remembered. Using direct address towards the
audience I want to draw on their pathos to gain an
emotional response to my campaign posters. Coming out can be daunting
to young people so my goal for this campaign poster is that it helps them
realise there is nothing wrong with them.

Mock up 3

Here is a mock up for one of my campaign posters

this one is for antidrug abuse campaign. I don’t
want this poster to be graphic but I still want to
convey the dangers of drug abuse. I decided by
using expression symbols I could show the
deadliness and seriousness of the subject but it still
isn’t unnecessarily upsetting. I will use comic “X”
eyes to convey the person is dead, the on-the-nose
symbol will be easily understood by viewers. I want
to use mildly upsetting imagery to draw on the
pathos of my audience so they retain the
information of my poster longer, in the margins underneath the main image
and quote I will add additional information on the posters subject. I will list
organisations that specialise in young LGBT substance abuse.

Mock up 4

Here is my final mock up for my campaign

posters, in this poster I wanted to explore
the issue of prejudice and discrimination on
young LGBT people. In the poster I wanted
to take on a different approach on
tackling discrimination, majority of systemic
anti-LGBT views stem from religion. I
wanted to ask the people who use their
religion to bash others, “who’d you think he’d let in?” The he obviously being
God having a choice between an LGBT person who has never discriminated
against others or a highly religious person who has spent their whole life
preaching hate towards others? I hope to draw on the pathos of my viewers
so that LGBT people feel empowered in that they aren’t doing anything
wrong with being who they are. In the margins of the poster I will add
additional information surrounding prejudice and discrimination against LGBT
people, supply resources and organisations that can aid them if they find
themselves victim to an attack.

Main advert

This will be the main campaign advert, it will cover most of the topics I am trying to

Campaign poster 1- Dangerous Behaviours

In this campaign poster it will shine a light on one of the more dangerous
issues facing young LGBT people today is drug abuse. In a survey conducted
by University of Lancashire and the LGBT Foundation found the 47% of LGBT
16-24 year olds had taken illegal drugs in the past month. The poster will
depict a comical and histrionic image of a girl who has overdosed on drugs. I
don’t to be overly graphic and upset my audience, so to lessen the intensity
the model with have big “X’s” across her eyes and a bottle with a poisonous
symbol on it. This will be an obvious and theatrical image but the quote I am
using for the image will bring back the real implications and dangers of drug
use, I will use the quote “THEY COST MORE THAN JUST MONEY”. The margins at the
bottom or sides of the photo will contain additional information on the topic, I
will direct them to the LGBT Foundation or FRANK, which are British based
organisations that help with substance abuse.
Campaign poster 2- Dealing with Ignorance and Discrimination

In this poster I want to tackle the idea of LGBT people being shunned by god
and bigoted people using this idea to shun or scare LGBT people. I believe
that young LGBT people are most at risk from being affected by these ideas
and people. Additionally, LGBT based attacks have been on the rise in the
UK. The poster will show the two sides of the argument, there will be protestors
holding signs that say “LIES” or “HATE” and a gay couple holding a sign
together that says “LOVE”. The protestor will have a dark red background
and the couple will have a light blue background with a graphic sun, this will
come to represent “god”. The quote will tie in the idea by asking “WHO’D YOU
THINK HE’D LET IN?” The question is meant to challenge the mentality of these

Harry Durkan
12

people who actively hate others but still they believe that they will be
rewarded.
Campaign poster 3- Coming Out

In this poster I want to directly address the members of the audience that
might be struggling with their sexuality or identity in any way that they’re not
unnatural and neither are the feelings. Coming out can be very difficult
experience for some young LGBT people, some might never gather the
courage to even do it. The poster will depict an LGBT person who is
presenting as androgynous in a void of darkness, but using editing, I will
overlay the LGBT Rainbow flag over her. So it appears that they are glowing
the colours of the pride flag.
Campaign poster 4- Mental Health

In this poster I want to discuss the issue of mental health, a problem facing
many young LGBT people today. In a survey conducted by Metro found that
44% of young LGBT people have considered taking their own lives. The main
point I want my poster to make is if anyone is having these feelings that they
seek help from a doctor or someone they trust. The poster will depict a young
LGBT who is chained up to symbolise her mental illness having a control over
her that she can’t stop. The quote will read “PERMENANT SOLUTION>TEMPORARY
PROBLEM”

Campaign poster 5- Family and Friends

In this poster I want to bring light on the importance that family and friends
have when it comes to young LGBT people. Family and friends provide a
stability to them, in a time in their lives where they aren’t sure if they will have
those people or the support they offer in their lives anymore. I want this poster
to symbolise the relationship between them, and the importance it has on
the lives of young LGBT people.
Campaign poster 6- Toxic Relationships

In this campaign poster I want to inform young LGBT people about the
dangers of entering a toxic relationships. I want to symbolise the controlling
and power based nature of these relationships, I want to negatively portray
these relationships and encourage victims to go to trusted family or friends, or
organisations that specialise in LGBT relationship abuse. My poster will contain
two models, one will be in the centre of the image looking frightened and the
other will be a hand model, as they will be two massive hands closing in on
her.
Campaign poster 7- Sexual Health
In this poster I want to shine a light on the certain dangers that young LGBT
people face when they grow up, especially sexual transmitted infections.

Harry Durkan
13

Screening tests amongst young LGBT people have declined altogether and I
believe ignorance surrounding these issues will only continue to worsen the
problem. 1 in 14 young people have chlamydia, and it is symptomless so
some won’t even know. The poster will depict a young teen with Black Hand
prints all over their arms and face this will symbolise the disease they’ve
contracted. The quote will read “…”

Location and back up

The location I want to shoot in for my campaign posters and for the adverts is in the
college shooting studio, as it has a green screen, that will be able to help with
photo-shopping the images and creating the desired background I want for the
posters and the adverts. If I cannot use the shooting studio I will use the photography
studio, as it has a black drop which I wanted for the adverts for my campaign but
could achieve this with a green screen.

Equipment and back up

The equipment and props I will use in my production will be very limited as I don’t
really want excessive props or equipment. I would like a camera stand so the
footage isn’t shaky and look unprofessional, but other than that the lighting I need is
provided in the studio and I’m not recording audio from the shots.

Test shots
This is a test shot for my campaign, this is not what I want the final design to
look like. I haven’t used my own images for the back ground and I don’t think
I have experimented enough with the Photoshop software. I have cut out a
section of a test shoot I had with my model and placed it on a different
background. I have also altered the colours of the main image and the
background. The quote will be in the font I have used in the test shot but will
be in a text box, this is make it more graphic and stand out to my audience.

Harry Durkan
20

This is a second test shot for my campaign poster, again I have taken a
section from a test shoot that I had with my model. This campaign poster is
targeted towards the young LGBT people who are abusing drugs or other
substances. Again I have changed the colour and tine of the photo.
