Scenario
In this Skills Based Assessment students will create a small network that requires connecting network devices
and configuring host computers and one Cisco router for basic network connectivity. Switch1 has a default
configuration, and does not require additional configuration. Common utility commands will be used to test and
document the network.

Task 1: Design the Logical LAN Topology. (18 Points / Time – 40 Minutes)

Given two IP addresses and masks of 192.168.25.0/24 and 192.168.35.0/24 (address / mask), design an IP
addressing scheme that satisfies the following requirements:

Subnet Network Number of Hosts

Subnet A 192.168.25.0/24 28
Subnet B 192.168.35.0/24 20

Host computers will use the FIRST IP address in the subnet. The router port(s) will use the LAST network host
address in each subnet.

Subnet A (6 Points)
Student
Specification Answers
Total number of bits in the network portion 28
IP mask (binary) 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000
IP mask (decimal) 255.255.255.0
Number of usable hosts per network 254
First IP Host address 192.168.25.1
Last IP Host address 192.168.25.254

Subnet B (6 Points)

Write down the IP address information for each device (6 Points):

Device IP address Mask Gateway

Host1 192.168.25.1 255.255.255.0 192.168.25.254
Router1-Fa0/0 192.168.25.254 255.255.255.0 -------------------
Host2 192.168.35.1 255.255.255.0 192.168.35.254
Router1-Fa0/1 192.168.35.254 255.255.255.0 -------------------

Task 2: Configure the Physical Topology. (Total 8 Points / Time – 10 Minutes)

Task 2 - Step 1: Physically connect lab devices. (8 Points)

Cable the network devices as shown in Figure 1. If not already enabled, turn power on to all devices.

Correct Cabling Points

LAN cable between Host1 and Router1 Fa0/0 (2 points)
LAN cable between Switch1 and Router1 Fa0/1 (2 points)
LAN cable between Switch1 and Host2 (2 points)
Console cable between Host1 and Router1 (2 points)

Figure 1 - Cabling the network.

Task 2 - Step 2: Visually inspect network connections

After cabling the network devices, take a moment to verify the connections.

Task 3: Configure the Logical Topology. (Total 10 Points / Time – 40 Minutes)

Task 3 - Step 1: Configure host computers. (10 Points)

After configuring each host computer, record the host network settings with the ipconfig /all command.

Host1 Network Configuration (5 Points)

Description Host1 PC-PT connected to 1841 Router 1
Physical Address 0001.42C7.8097
IP Address 192.168.25.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.25.254
Host2 Network Configuration (5 Points)
Description Host2 PCPT connected to Switch1 2960 24TT
Physical Address 00D0.D300.5EC2
IP Address 192.168.35.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.35.254

Task 4: Verify network connectivity. (Total 8 Points / Time – 30 Minutes)

Task 4 - Step 1: Use the ping command to verify network connectivity.

Network connectivity can be verified with the ping command.

Use the following table to methodically verify connectivity with each network device. Take corrective action to
establish connectivity if a test fails:

From To IP Address Ping results Points

Host1 NIC IP address 192.168.25.1 Successful (4 points)
Host1 Router1, Fa0/0 192.168.25.254 Successful
Host1 Router1, Fa0/1 192.168.35.254 Successful
Host1 Host2 192.168.35.1 Successful
Host2 NIC IP address 192.168.35.1 Successful (4 points)
Host2 Router1, Fa0/1 192.168.35.254 Successful
Host2 Router1, Fa0/0 192.168.25.254 Successful
Host2 Host1 192.168.25.1 Successful

Task 5: Submit two Files via E-mail (Total 2 Points)

Save this completed MSWord file as “LastName, FirstName - SBA.docx” (or LastName, FirstName - SBA.doc
depending on your version of MS Word) and the configured Packet Tracer file as “LastName, FirstName -
SBA.pkt” and email both of them to bill.gay@nscc.ca) by 10:30 am, Friday, December 9, 2011.
