Job Description

Job Title: Sports Coach

Grade: S3

Section: Leisure Centres Business

Department: Adult and Community Services

Reports to: Senior Community Sport and Physical Activity Officer

1. Purpose of the Job

To deliver the Community Sport and Physical Activity Service through


supervising and instructing, quality activity sessions for all sections of the
community. Cover the duties of or assist other sports coaches when required.

2. Main Activities

2.1 You will be required to coach and supervise on a range of Community Sport and
Physical Activity services through supervising activity leaders and work
experience students and giving instruction and guidance on sport(s) techniques
to increase interest and competence.

2.2 You will be required to encourage participation through planning and


implementing a stimulating and varied programme of activities, in a safe and
equitable environment.

2.3 Work on local sports and fitness programmes within club, school and community
settings, as well as local and National initiatives within the Borough.

2.4 Motivate and supervise any supporting staff, work experience students and
volunteers.

2.5 Work varied hours including school holiday periods, daytimes, evenings and
some weekend work on an as and when required basis.

2.6 Distribute publicity material to participants to promote Community Sport and


Physical Activity activities.

2.7 Check sports equipment to ensure that it is safe for use and report any
breakages / missing equipment to the appropriate persons. Ensure that unsafe
items are not used.

2.8 Account for the use and issue of all equipment and ensure safe return at the end
of sessions.
2.9 Issue tickets and receive payments and ensure that such payments are properly
accounted for and paid to the Community Sport and Physical Activity Team as
soon as possible, in accordance with established procedures.

2.10 Undertake surveys of users.

2.11 Complete monitoring forms on conclusion of each session and return to the
Community Sport and Physical Activity Team with your time sheet on a weekly
basis.

2.12 Distribute and collate evaluation forms from participants when required.

2.13 Attend staff meetings and both internal and external training as part of the staff
development and mentoring scheme. Attend at least one external training
course per year of employment.

3. Customer Care

3.1 Provide services that are fair and accessible to all, challenging existing practices
that support the traditional culture and promote the Customer First proposition
across the Council

3.2 Ensure complaints are dealt with openly and fairly and that customer complaints
are processed in accordance with the Councils Corporate Policy Guidelines and
that the Division’s responses are monitored.

4. People Management

4.1 Supervise and/or provide technical direction of work experience participants and
Volunteers, with responsibility for quality of work and delivery of services at
sessions and other activities.

5. General Accountabilities and Responsibilities

5.1 Ensure compliance with appropriate legislation, Council Policies, the Council
Constitution, Financial Rules and other requirements of the Council.

5.2 Promote the development of a high quality individual need led service, to comply
at all times with the Council’s policies and procedures, particularly those
regarding Data Protection, Equalities and Diversity and Health and Safety.

5.3 Undertakes a proactive, committed approach towards the Councils Best Value
ethos.

5.4 Ensure compliance with and actively promote the Council’s Equalities and
Diversity policies and strategies.

5.5 Ensure compliance with and actively promote Health and Safety at work
legislation, Council and Departmental H&S policies and procedures.

5.6 Comply with the competencies and standard requisites agreed by the Council as
relevant to your post.
5.7 Comply with the Data Protection Act 1998 (all employees of the Council will not
disclose or make use of, for their private advantage, any information held on
manual or computer records, which are not available to the public, however
acquired).

5.8 Take responsibility for continuing self-development and participate in training


and development activities.
5.9 The post holder will be required to vary working times to cover the needs of the
service and the duties of other staff as and when required i.e. attending evening
meetings, weekend events and covering staff absences.

5.10 Maintain own physical fitness to ensure the effective delivery of coaching and
teaching sessions.

5.11 The above mentioned duties are neither exclusive nor exhaustive and the post
holder may be called upon to carry out such other appropriate duties as may be
required by the Line Manager within the grading level of the post and the
competence of the post holder.
