GEOMETRIC DIMENSIONING AND TOLERANCING SYMBOLOGY

METHOD, USAGE AND DEFINITIONS

A- GENERAL
1- Purpose
a- Purpose of this Standard.
This standard provides definition of symbols used on drawings
that employ the principles of Geometric Dimensioning and
Tolerancing (G. D. & T.). The examples of geometric symbology,
datum and tolerance values shown in Part 3, "Symbols and
Definitions" are for illustration purposes only and do not
represent all conditions of application.
The symbology and terminology used herein are based on, and
extracted from, "American National Standard Engineering
Drawing and Related Documentation Practices - Dimensioning and
Tolerancing, ANSIY14.5M 1982".
b- Exceptions.
Applications and interpretation of the G. D. & T. System
conforms to ANSIY14.5M -1982 with the following exceptions:
Separate positional callouts are gaged separately regardless
of datum reference.
(1) - Multiple patterns of Features of Size located by basic
dimensions relative to the same datum features of size
and modifiers, referenced in the same order of
precedence, allows each pattern as a group to shift
independently and be gaged separately. This separate
gaging notation applies only to the relationship of one
pattern to another, not to the interrelationship of
features within a pattern callout. The quantity of holes
(or other features) specified directly above the feature
control frame constitute a pattern and have simultaneous
gaging requirements (see Figure 1).

A single asterisk "*" after the paragraph header denotes a technical change to the paragraph. A triple asterisk before and after an item
(*** text ***) identifies the specific changed text.

(2) - Multiple patterns of Features of Size located by basic

dimensions relative to the same datum features not
subject to size (surface, plane), referenced in the same
order of precedence, allows each pattern as a group to
be gaged separately. By virtue of the datum references
not being size related, simultaneous gaging could be
considered.
Simultaneous gaging is limited to those areas where the
collective effect would not be detrimental to part
function, and where Design Engineering, Manufacturing,
Gage Processing and Certification would concur (see
Figure 2).
(3) - When simultaneous gaging of multiple patterns is a
requirement of part function, one of the patterns is
qualified as a datum feature of size (one or more
features within the datum pattern). Then a "gage with"
requirement is specified, taking the form of:
(a)- As a datum reference in the Feature Control Frame
(Preferred) (Figure 4).
(b) - GAGE WITH (Optional)(Figure 4)

(c) - GAGE WITH (Figure 3)

2- Scope
a- Application.
This standard is for use in supplying certain parts under
purchase orders of Chrysler Corporation or its subsidiaries.
This standard is limited in its application to those drawings
or engineering illustrations which call out this standard
number in the standards block, or which refer to this standard
within some other standard or specification. Original
equipment and replacement parts for some vehicles sold by
Chrysler Corporation or its dealers are not covered by this
standard.
b- Hazardous Material Control.
Employee and consumer health, employee safety, and
environmental requirements are contained in CS - 9003.

a- Maximum Material Condition (MMC). The condition where a

feature of size contains the maximum amount of material within
the stated limits of size
- SYMBOL

b- Least Material Condition (LMC). The condition where a feature

of size contains the least amount of material within the
stated limits of size.
- Symbol

c- Regardless of Feature Size (RFS). The term used to indicate

that a form or positional tolerance applies as follows:
(1) - At any increment of size of the feature within its size
tolerance.
(2) - At the actual size of a datum feature.
- Symbol

d - Projected Tolerance Zone (PTZ). A projected tolerance zone is

a tolerance zone applied to a hole in which a pin, stud,
screw, or bolt etc. is to be inserted, controlling the
perpendicularity of the hole to the extent of the projection
from the hole as it relates to the assembly of the mating part
or parts. The zone extends beyond the datum surface of the
part to the functional length (maximum) of the pin, stud,
etc., relative to its assembly with the mating part or parts.
- Symbol

e- Basic Dimension (BSC). A numerical value, enclosed in a frame,

used to describe the theoretically exact size, shape or
location of a feature or datum target. The basic dimension is
the basis from which permissible variations are established by
tolerances in the feature control frame or in notes.

f- Datum. A datum identifying symbol is a letter(s) enclosed in

a frame defining physical features assumed to be exact for
purposes of computation, from which location or geometric
relationship of features of a part(s) are established.
- Symbol

g- Datum Target. A datum target identifying symbol is a circle

divided horizontally into two halves. The lower half contains
a letter identifying the associated datum followed by the
target number assigned. The upper half is blank unless target
size is specified.
Symbol

h- Diameter, Spherical Diameter. Used to designate a specified

diametral tolerance zone in a nature control frame, and
elsewhere on a drawing in lieu of the abbreviation "DIA". The
symbol must always precede the diametral value. Where the
diametral value is spherical, the letter "S" precedes the
diameter symbol.
-- Symbol

i- All Around Profile. Used in conjunction with a profile

control, this symbol specifies that the profile control
applies to the entire periphery of the surface.
- Symbol

j- Datum Target Point. Must be used in conjunction with a Datum

Target Symbol. (Refer to A.3.g) The point, line or area is
dimensionally located on a direct view of the surface or on
two adjacent views and is always located with basic
dimensions.

k- Depth/Deep. Used preceding a dimension to indicate that the

dimension is the depth of the feature.
-- Symbol

l- Square. Used preceding a dimension to indicate that the

dimension applies to a square shape.

-- Symbol
m- Dimension Not To Scale. Used in conjunction with any non-basic
dimension to indicate that the dimension is not measurable on
the drawing.
3.75 -- Symbol
n- Number Of Times/Places. Repetitive features or dimensions are
specified by use of an "X" preceded by a number to indicate
the quantity and succeeded by a dash. This is then followed by
the feature dimension.
8X - -- Symbol
o- Radius (R), Common Radius(CR), Spherical Radius(SR).
Designates a radial feature of size on a drawing. The symbol
must always precede the radial value. The term "COMMON RADIUS"
is to be used in lieu of typical (TYP) with the symbol "CR".
Where the radial value is spherical, the letter "S" precedes
the radius symbol.
R, CR, SR -- Symbols
p- Reference. Designates a dimension on a drawing which is
presented for information only. Reference dimensions are not
to be scaled, measured or otherwise used to determine the
quality or acceptability of a part. The symbol is used in lieu
of "REF".

q- Arc Length. Used on a drawing to denote that the dimension is

arc length (not chord length). When used, the leader lines
must parallel the arc.
-- Symbol

r- Dimension Origin. Used to indicate the surface from which

tolerances originate.
-- Symbol

s- Conical Taper. Conical taper is the ratio of the difference in

the diameters of two surface segments (perpendicular to the
axis) of a cone to the distance between these surface
segments.
-- Symbol

t- Slope (Flat Taper). Slope or flat taper is the inclination of

a surface expressed as a ratio of the height at each end
(above and at right angles to the baseline) to the distance
between those heights.
-- Symbol

u- Counterbore/Spotface. This symbol precedes a diametral

dimension which is the size of the counter bore or spotface.
-- Symbol

v- Countersink. This symbol precedes the callout of a

countersink. The bailout specifies the diameter and included
angle.
-- Symbol
w- Straightness. Each longitudinal element of this surface, in
the direction of the straightness symbol, must lie, within
size, between two parallel lines 0.25mm(0.010 inch.) apart.
